Book The Beginnings of Piezoelectricity

Download or read book The Beginnings of Piezoelectricity written by Shaul Katzir and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-04-08 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beginnings of Piezoelectricity, the first history of the subject, exhaustively examines how diverse influences led to the discovery of the phenomenon in 1880, and how they shaped subsequent research until the consolidation of an empirical and theoretical knowledge of the field circa 1895. Shaul Katzir’s historical account shows that this ‘mundane’ science was an intriguing intellectual and practical enterprise, which involved originality, surprises and controversies.

Nearly two-thirds of the letters in this 4th volume are previously unpublished. They concern Faraday's work on such diverse topics as terrestrial and atmospheric magnetism, the electrification of lighthouses and the theory of telegraphic retardation, as well as advice to the Government on the war with Russia, his exclusion from the Sandemanian Church and his views on table turning. Correspondence with such figures as Thomson, Babbage, Brunel, Schoenbein and Whewell.

Book Aspects of Metaphor in Physics

Download or read book Aspects of Metaphor in Physics written by Hanna Pulaczewska and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-05-03 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With reference to copious case studies, this book attempts to give a broad and comprehensive view of the multiplicity of forms taken by metaphor in physics. A diachronic presentation of the views hitherto advanced on the role of metaphor in the natural sciences provides an introduction to the crucial issues. By means of a broad definition of metaphor as a lexical, semantic, and conceptual phenomenon, metaphor is identified at various levels of physics discourse: in metatheory and methodology; in the sociology of the origin and evolution of science; in theory and conceptualization, including physics models; in education; and finally in linguistic expression, including terminology. Whereas historians and theoreticians of science reduce the question of metaphor in physics to the question of the role of scientific models, where one area of physics provides concepts and structures for another area, the perspective adopted here is that of cognitive semantics. The study inquires into the way in which concept-formation and terminology in physics avails itself of the metaphoric bent immanent in everyday language, conceptualizing abstract ideas in spatial terms, inanimate things as intelligent, measurable phenomena in terms of the visual. Attention is also given to the way in which metaphoric processes make it possible to integrate new knowledge into old and sometimes obsolete structures rather than eliminating those structures altogether.

Book excerpt: The only resource devoted Solely to Inductance Inductance is an unprecedented text, thoroughly discussing "loop" inductance as well as the increasingly important "partial" inductance. These concepts and their proper calculation are crucial in designing modern high-speed digital systems. World-renowned leader in electromagnetics Clayton Paul provides the knowledge and tools necessary to understand and calculate inductance. Unlike other texts, Inductance provides all the details about the derivations of the inductances of various inductors, as well as: Fills the need for practical knowledge of partial inductance, which is essential to the prediction of power rail collapse and ground bounce problems in high-speed digital systems Provides a needed refresher on the topics of magnetic fields Addresses a missing link: the calculation of the values of the various physical constructions of inductors—both intentional inductors and unintentional inductors—from basic electromagnetic principles and laws Features the detailed derivation of the loop and partial inductances of numerous configurations of current-carrying conductors With the present and increasing emphasis on high-speed digital systems and high-frequency analog systems, it is imperative that system designers develop an intimate understanding of the concepts and methods in this book. Inductance is a much-needed textbook designed for senior and graduate-level engineering students, as well as a hands-on guide for working engineers and professionals engaged in the design of high-speed digital and high-frequency analog systems.

Book The Many Faces of Maxwell Dirac and Einstein Equations

Download or read book The Many Faces of Maxwell Dirac and Einstein Equations written by Waldyr A. Rodrigues, Jr and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an exposition of the algebra and calculus of differential forms, of the Clifford and Spin-Clifford bundle formalisms, and of vistas to a formulation of important concepts of differential geometry indispensable for an in-depth understanding of space-time physics. The formalism discloses the hidden geometrical nature of spinor fields. Maxwell, Dirac and Einstein fields are shown to have representatives by objects of the same mathematical nature, namely sections of an appropriate Clifford bundle. This approach reveals unity in diversity and suggests relationships that are hidden in the standard formalisms and opens new paths for research. This thoroughly revised second edition also adds three new chapters: on the Clifford bundle approach to the Riemannian or semi-Riemannian differential geometry of branes; on Komar currents in the context of the General Relativity theory; and an analysis of the similarities and main differences between Dirac, Majorana and ELKO spinor fields. The exercises with solutions, the comprehensive list of mathematical symbols, and the list of acronyms and abbreviations are provided for self-study for students as well as for classes. From the reviews of the first edition: “The text is written in a very readable manner and is complemented with plenty of worked-out exercises which are in the style of extended examples. ... their book could also serve as a textbook for graduate students in physics or mathematics." (Alberto Molgado, Mathematical Reviews, 2008 k)

Book The Many Faces of Maxwell Dirac and Einstein Equations

Download or read book The Many Faces of Maxwell Dirac and Einstein Equations written by Waldyr A. Rodrigues and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-07-03 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive reference on differential geometry. It shows that Maxwell, Dirac and Einstein fields, which were originally considered objects of a very different mathematical nature, have representatives as objects of the same mathematical nature. The book also analyzes some foundational issues of relativistic field theories. All calculation procedures are illustrated by many exercises that are solved in detail.
