Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Crystallography I have had valuable help from numerous friends, to and all of whom I give my hearty thanks. I am specia indebted to Mr. L. Fletcher, Keeper of the Minerals of t British Museum; to Mr. L. J. Spencer, also of the Mine Department of the British Museum; to my colleague, Mr. Hutchinson, Fellow of Pembroke College, Cambridge; to my sister, Mrs. G. T. Pilcher; who have all been enough to read the proof-sheets, and some parts of th manuscript. To their care and the valuable suggestions mad by them the book owes much; and it is hoped that few erro of any kind have escaped detection. The very full index i the work of Mr. Spencer. I have much pleasure also in expressing my obligation t Mr. Edwin Wilson for the care exercised in the preparation of the diagrams needed to illustrate the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crystallography: A Treatise on the Morphology of Crystals The establishment of Crystallography as a science at the hands of Hauy dates back a hundred years from the present time; and midway in that period (in 1839) Professor W. H. Miller published his now classical Treatise. The notation by index-symbols, the representation of the relative positions of crystal faces by the distribution of their 'poles' on a sphere, the stereographic projection of the sphere and of the poles lying upon it, and some of the methods that Miller employed in dealing with the symbols of crystal faces, may indeed be shown to have been introduced in various memoirs by earlier geometers. Thus Bernhardi (1809), Neumann (1823), Frankenheim (1826), and Grassmann (1829) had all represented crystal faces by their normals; the three latter had projected the poles of faces and of zones on the great circles of a sphere: Neumann further represented a face by a symbol that was a first approximation to the simple form suggested by Whewell (1824-5) and afterwards by Justus G. Grassmann (1829) before it became in the hands of Miller an effective implement by which to rear the structure of modern Crystallography. Dr. Whewell, Miller's immediate predecessor in the Cambridge Chair, had indicated the method of deriving the symbol of a face from those of two other faces truncated by it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Mineralogy: With an Extended Treatise on Crystallography and Physical Mineralogy The remarkable advance in the Science Of Mineralogy, during the years that have elapsed since this text-book was first issued in 187 7, has made it necessary, in the preparation of a new edition, to rewrite the whole as well as to add much new matter and many new illustrations. The work being designed chiefly to meet the wants Of class or private instruction, this Object has at once determined the choice of topics discussed, the order and fullness Of treatment and the method Of presentation. Book An Elementary Treatise on Crystallography Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Elementary Treatise on Crystallography Classic Reprint written by Victor Regnault and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Crystallography The greater number of substances which we prepare in our laboratories are susceptible of crystallization, that is to say, of assuming regular geometrical forms; and it is observed that when the formation of these crystals proceeds under the same circumstances, the forms of the difl'erent individual crystals are precisely similar, so much so, indeed, that these forms are one of the most certain means of distinguishing crystalline bodies from each other. The crystalline forms which different natural substances afi'ect, appear, at first sight, to be infinitely variable; but a minute study of these various forms has brought to light certain general laws to which they are all subj ect, and which set limits to their number. The laws relative to the crystalline forms of bodies already occupy a conspicuous place in our chemical theories, and the importance of this branch of study will become still greater, when the science of crystallo graphy is more generally spread, and chemists give themselves the trouble of determining, with precision, the crystalline forms of the bodies which they examine. The principles of this science, which here follow, require merely of the reader an acquaintance with elementary geometry. Book An Introduction to Chemical Crystallography Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to Chemical Crystallography Classic Reprint written by Andreas Fock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Chemical Crystallography IN 1888 Dr. F ock published the little treatise entitled Einleitung in die chemische Krystallogmphie, in which be summarised the results of recent investigation and the views deduced from them on the subject of crystal growth in its relation to some chemical problems: and in the present small volume this admirable summary has been enlarged by additions necessitated by the advances made in this important subject since 1888. The form of brief chapters into which the discussion is thrown, chapters each devoted to the exposition of a single idea, invests Dr. F ock's little book with a singularly readable character, and its translation by Mr. Pope will have brought it within the reach of University and other students, to the majority of whom its original German dress would present considerable, if not insuperable, difficulties. Book Essentials of Crystallography Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essentials of Crystallography Classic Reprint written by Edward Henry Kraus and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Crystallography This text is intended for beginners and aims to present the essential features of geometrical crystallography from a standpoint which combines the ideas of symmetry with those of holohedrism, hemihedrism, etc. All forms possible in the thirty-two classes of symmetry are discussed even though representatives of several of the classes have not as yet been observed among minerals or artificial salts. In each system, however, the important classes are indicated so that the book may readily be used for abridged courses. No attempt has been made to discuss the measurement and projection of crystals inasmuch as they involve a somewhat comprehensive knowledge of forms and, hence, cannot be treated adequately in an introductory course. For a similar reason very little reference has been made to the various structural theories of crystals. However, the bibliography of the more important works, which have been published in English and German during the past thirty years, will prove useful to those who may desire to pursue the study of crystallography further than the scope of this text permits. Free use has been made of the various standard texts on crystallography, but especial acknowledgments are due von Groth, Linck, Bruhns, Tschermak, and E. S. Dana. A very large majority of the figures have been drawn especially for this text, the others, however, have been taken from various sources. I am indebted to Mr. W. F. Hunt, Instructor in Mineralogy, also to Messrs. I. D. Scott and C. W. Cook, Assistants in Mineralogy in the University of Michigan, for aid in the reading of the proof. Book Lecture Notes on Crystallography Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lecture Notes on Crystallography Classic Reprint written by Horace Bushnell Patton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture Notes on Crystallography The difficulty of presenting the subject of crystallography introductory to a course in mineralogy, with only a limited time at one's disposal, has been realized by all instructors in this branch. Even the best text books fail to present the subject in so clear a light as to do away with the necessity of lecturing. The main difficulty with the best treatises on this subject, when put in the hands of the student, is their length and multiplicity of details. These lecture notes are not intended to form a treatise on crystallography. They were originally prepared, not for publication, but for use in the class room, supplemented by lectures, crystal models and natural crystals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crystallography: An Elementary Manual for the Laboratory It has been my intention for over thirty years to elaborate and publish my notes for the use of my students, but as my time has been fully occupied in other work, principally in development work and in executive duties, as well as in original investigation, very little time has been available in which to prepare my notes for publication. Even now, on account of the present demands upon my time, but little elabora tion can be made. These notes are published now primarily for use in my own classes, containing over one hundred students in Mineralogy. It is hoped.
