Book Mitchell a Class by Itself

Download or read book Mitchell a Class by Itself written by Paul J. Hyde Jr and published by . This book was released on 2013-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world renowned Mitchell spinning reel, first produced in France, has become the most collected fishing reel to have ever been produced. It has been documented that the date of manufacture for the first production Mitchell reel was produced in 1939. It was the very first reel of its type recognizable as an egg-shaped, open-faced spinning reel and was marketed to the public in 1939. Over the years these reels evolved with few major changes from year to year. The chapters of this book will address some of these changes in hopes that young collectors might become more familiar with the early Mitchell reel that would eventually evolve into the Mitchell 300 and 301. This book is not intended to be a definitive record of identification but an informative resource of observations. My hope is that many will gain knowledge of the famous Mitchell and become enthusiasts involved in the hobby of collecting these unmatched works of technology. New and old collectors and enthusiasts alike will find this book a great resource with tons of pictures and information addressing maintenance, servicing, restoration and refinishing of Mitchell reels, restoration, repair and refinishing of vintage boxes, finding resources for purchasing reels, repair and replacement parts, displays, documentaries, historical pieces and informative journals. There are many different types and manufacturers of fishing reels with many different choices for the collector but in my opinion there is no better choice for a collectable reel than the indestructible Mitchell. These reels are plentiful and affordable for the most part. Yet there are very rare reels for the enthusiast with a deep pocket and a strong passion. Many reels are available with the old original boxes and literature. I have found it extremely satisfying to repair and restore these original boxes, just as much as working on the reels themselves. I have been able to pick up a few pieces off of ebay that many others passed on because of the appearance and damage of these boxes. I will share some of the techniques used in repairing these pieces in the pages of this book. I will also go into servicing a reel, doing repairs, refurbishing and refinishing reels. I have over forty years experience in the automobile restoration industry and have found the knowledge gained in that profession to be very helpful in the restoration of these reels. There is much debate over if a reel is more valuable as an original or as a restored piece. For me, that all depends on the rarity of the reel and the shape that the reel is in when you obtain it. This thought process is very similar to collectable automobiles. It is kind of up to the owners as to what you wish to do. A collection of Mitchell reels can be as inexpensive or as elaborate as you care to build it. It is totally up to you how far you wish to go, how much you wish to spend, and how involved you choose to become with other collectors. Regardless of what level you choose, the past-time of collecting the Mitchell will be extremely gratifying. So get out there to those estate sales, yard sales, flea markets, antique malls and pawn shops or get those computers heated up while scrolling online and begin your own collection of Mitchell reels!

Book Steinbeck s Imaginarium

Download or read book Steinbeck s Imaginarium written by Robert J. DeMott and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Steinbeck's Imaginarium, Robert DeMott delves into the imaginative, creative, and sometimes neglected aspects of John Steinbeck's writing. DeMott positions Steinbeck as a prophetic voice for today as much as he was for the Depression-era 1930s as the essays explore the often unknown or unacknowledged elements of Steinbeck's artistic career that deserve closer attention. He writes about the determining scientific influences, such as quantum physics and ecology, in Cannery Row and considers Steinbeck's addiction to writing through the lens of the extensive, obsessive full-length journals that he kept while writing three of his best-known novels--The Grapes of Wrath, The Wayward Bus, and East of Eden. DeMott insists that these monumental works of fiction all comprise important statements on his creative process and his theory of fiction writing. DeMott further blends his personal experience as a lifelong angler with a reading of several neglected fishing episodes in Steinbeck's work. Collectively, the chapters illuminate John Steinbeck as a fully conscious, self-aware, literate, experimental novelist whose talents will continue to warrant study and admiration for years to come.

Book Land of Little Rivers

Download or read book Land of Little Rivers written by Austin M. Francis and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beaverkill, Willowemoc, Neversink, Esopus, Schoharie, and Delaware—the rivers of angling pioneers Thaddeus Norris, Robert Barnwell Roosevelt, Theodore Gordon, and many others—are celebrated in this gorgeous book of photographs and text. In three major sections, Land of Little Rivers presents historical and physical profiles of the rivers; classic rods, reels, and flies; and engaging stories of the people, events, and developments that constitute the Catskill fly-fishing tradition. Complementing its photographic beauty, Land of Little Rivers is a book of substance, filled with fascinating stories, anecdotes, and nuggety captions. Land of Little Rivers is the product of author Francis’s twenty-five years of research and writing about Catskill fly fishing, and of photographer Ferorelli’s more than thirteen thousand images, from which has been selected the most evocative portfolio of photos ever made of these historic rivers. Together they have produced an exquisite, museum-quality work, one that captures magnificently the beauty and passion so central to the sport Izaak Walton called “the gentle art.”

Book The Unreasonable Virtue of Fly Fishing

Download or read book The Unreasonable Virtue of Fly Fishing written by Mark Kurlansky and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Outdoor Book Award Winner for Outdoor Literature From the award-winning, bestselling author of Cod-the irresistible story of the science, history, art, and culture of the least efficient way to catch a fish. Fly fishing, historian Mark Kurlansky has found, is a battle of wits, fly fisher vs. fish-and the fly fisher does not always (or often) win. The targets-salmon, trout, and char; and for some, bass, tarpon, tuna, bonefish, and even marlin-are highly intelligent, athletic animals. The allure, Kurlansky learns, is that fly fishing makes catching a fish as difficult as possible. The flies can be beautiful and intricate, some made with over two dozen pieces of feather and fur; the cast is a matter of grace and rhythm, with different casts and rods yielding varying results. Kurlansky is known for his deep dives into specific subjects, from cod to oysters to salt. But he spent his boyhood days on the shore of a shallow pond. Here, where tiny fish weaved under a rocky waterfall, he first tied string to a branch, dangled a worm into the water, and unleashed his passion for fishing. Since then, his love of the sport has led him around the world's countries, coasts, and rivers-from the wilds of Alaska to Basque country, from Ireland and Norway to Russia and Japan. And, in true Kurlansky fashion, he absorbed every fact, detail, and anecdote along the way. The Unreasonable Virtue of Fly Fishing marries Kurlansky's signature wide-ranging reach with a subject that has captivated him for a lifetime-combining history, craft, and personal memoir to show readers, devotees of the sport or not, the necessity of experiencing nature's balm first-hand.
