Book excerpt: Classical guitarists---both students and professional performers---require the same high-quality editions that their pianist colleagues have come to expect from Alfred Music. Our Classical Guitar Masterworks Editions continue the Alfred Music tradition of providing carefully edited, beautifully presented music for practice and performance. This edition of J. S. Bach's masterpieces for solo violin, artfully transcribed for classical guitar by renowned performer, recording artist, and pedagogue Nicholas Goluses, is an essential addition to any classical guitarist's library. Including a thoughtful, scholarly preface on the art of transcribing Bach for the guitar, drawn from Goluses' doctoral dissertation, studying this edition will be edifying for any serious classical guitarist. Goluses' approach to putting these pieces on the guitar, and his thoughtful fingerings, will help overcome the complexities of playing this important and challenging music.

Book Bach Transcription for Marimba Creating an Authentic Performance Edition of Johann Sebastian Bach s Sonata No 1 for Violin Solo BWV 1001 and Sonata No 2 Grave BWV 1003 Using Guitar and Lute Transcriptions as Models

Download or read book Bach Transcription for Marimba Creating an Authentic Performance Edition of Johann Sebastian Bach s Sonata No 1 for Violin Solo BWV 1001 and Sonata No 2 Grave BWV 1003 Using Guitar and Lute Transcriptions as Models written by Darren Bruce Bastian and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musicians have transcribed and adapted Johann Sebastian Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo, BWV 1001-1006, since Bach penned the works around the year 1720. Bach, himself, transcribed much of the material, adapting it for organ, harpsichord, lute, or even for his sinfonias and cantatas. It was also common for performers of the time to personalize these pieces with ornamentation, improvisation, dynamics, rhythmic interpretation, and in some cases, changes in pitch material. It is in this spirit that the author introduces marimba performance editions of Bach's Sonata no. 1 for Violin Solo, BWV 1001, and Sonata no. 2: Grave, BWV 1003, based on performances and transcriptions by guitarists and lutanists. The guitar and lute were selected as models due to their similarities to the marimba as well as the abundant resources that guitarists and lutanists have provided regarding Bach's unaccompanied string music. Their transcriptions and performances frequently include adaptations to fit their instruments' polyphonic abilities and sound characteristics. A similar approach is likewise suitable for the marimba. Thus, the present study includes an overview of Baroque performance practice as it relates to plucked-string instruments, analysis of published lute and guitar transcriptions of Bach's unaccompanied string music, and transcriptions and analysis of lute and guitar audio recordings. The plucked-string artists and scholars' approach is then assimilated into an authentic marimba performance edition of these works.

Book excerpt: This publication presents a lightly modernized, fully corrected, reliable edition of Francisco Tárrega’s more idiomatic transcriptions and arrangements for the classic guitar. Tárrega, who was also an able pianist, chose works by diverse composers such as Ludwig van Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin, and Robert Schumann to arrange for his own guitar performances, greatly expanding the concert guitar repertoire of his time. This publication provides today’s players with a dependable edition of these works that can be seamlessly incorporated into any modern concert program. Written in standard notation only for the intermediate to advanced guitarist, this collection features pieces that were less commonly heard on the guitar and sound remarkably fresh to this day.

Book Johann Sebastian Bach Fugue in a Minor Bwv 1000

Download or read book Johann Sebastian Bach Fugue in a Minor Bwv 1000 written by Jeffrey Goodman and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. S. Bach's Fugue in A minor exists in three versions. The version for lute, BWV 1000, is in French lute tablature by Johann Christian Weyrauch. The violin version (in the key G minor) is from Sonata I, BWV 1001, and is in Bach's own handwriting. The organ version, BWV 539, is an unauthenticated and anonymous arrangement in D minor, and has not been used as source material for this transcription. This transcription is primarily based on the version for lute, but a few elements from the violin version are also incorporated. Since the lute version bears traces of some accommodation for technical considerations relating to the idiosyncrasies of the baroque lute, some minor inconsistencies have been resolved by relying on the violin version, since it is in Bach's own hand. About the Book This book contains three complete scores of the fugue. The musical content of each is virtually identical. The solo, duet and trio versions offer three modes for exploring the music. It is recommended that the player learn both the duet and trio versions, mastering each of the parts. In this way, the musical content of all the contrapuntal melodic strands will become deeply embedded in the player's musical imagination. When the player is fully at ease with each of the individual parts of the duet and trio, then the solo version can be mastered with much greater ease. The technical issues, which are at times quite challenging, then are encountered and resolved. A perfectly detailed musical imagination of all the parts then becomes the impetus for full technical mastery.
