Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Months Afoot in Spain Home, may seem almost to call for apology. If so, it is hereby duly tendered. What befell me on this vacation jaunt is no story of harrowing adventure, nor yet a record of the acquisition of new facts. But as I covered a thousand miles of the Iberian peninsula on foot, twice that distance Iby third-class rail, and am given to mingling with the masses, it may be that there have filtered into the following pages some facts and impressions that will be new to the reader. Yet it is less to record these that I have written, than to answer a question that has often been put to me since my return. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poor Folk in Spain We saw a Perez very much polished up by so many years of war. He wore a clean straw hat, new Clothes of the latest cut, a waistcoat of check with ornamental buttons, patent leather boots with a lacquer which flung back the rays of the June sun, and heavy owlish eyeglasses Of tortoiseshell fastened with a broad black ribbon. Indeed, SO transformed was he, that it was he who recognized us; and for some moments we stood trying to pierce through the new respectability, as though it were through a disguise. Book The Bridle Roads of Spain Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Bridle Roads of Spain Classic Reprint written by George John Cayley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bridle Roads of Spain There was a stripling once, long long ago, who, strange as it seems now, was in some sort identical with myself. He did not think it at the time, but he must have been rather an unusual boy; for he had an overmastering passion for books, and cared not for much else. He had been taught very little, but he was already trilingual, and devoured everything in the shape of reading in either of his three tongues that fell into his way. From the strange mixed mental pabulum thus provided he gained much vague impression and stuff for dreams, but no sense of reality or of the applicability of what he read to actual life. Once into his hands, which were mine, there came, I know not how, a book in English with a Spanish name, Las Alforjas. Anything Spanish appealed to me, for I loved the very sound of the Castilian words; and the saddlebags, of which the title was the translation, were familiar objects to me: brightly embroidered twin sacks of stout canvas to sling across the back of a mule or eke to carry oneself at a pinch in lieu of the carpet-bag or portmanteau of civilisation. Moreover, Spain itself meant to me as a boy a place of pleasant, but perfectly prosaic, sojourn, where elderly relatives were delightfully indulgent and had expansive views with regard to tips. Book excerpt: A discovery in Feral House’s Tramp Lit Series, Bart Kennedy’s 1908 A Tramp’s Philosophy is Kennedy’s late work distilling his life and experiences into a concept for living. He includes insights on everything from religion to civilization to crime to the lure of the open roads. “No social system or state can be really worth anything where the paramount aim is not to allow the individual to develop to the fullest, both mentally and physically. And this aim has never been the aim of any civilized state. ... The aim of all civilized states has been to keep the masses in subjugation for the benefit of cliques. And this is as true of republics as it is of autocracies. ... The money clique that rules America is more oppressive than is the Grand Ducal clique of Russia. It has a far worse effect on the American character.” About Bart Kennedy: Bart Kennedy was born in Leeds, England on March 9, 1861. He was raised in Manchester where he began his career at the age of six working part-time in a cotton mill. He worked in mills and machine shops throughout Manchester before joining the merchant navy as an able seaman in 1881. Jumped ship in Philadelphia where he tramped and worked odd jobs throughout the United States. Was illiterate until his early twenties until a fellow tramp taught him to read. He travels included all of North America and Europe. Occupations included: oyster fisherman, gold miner, opera singer, actor, writer, lecturer, and builder.
