Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tramp Abroad, Vol. 1 of 2 It was in March, 1878, that Mark Twain took his tramp through Europe, and now when in 1923 one reads again that old chronicle, the surroundings now so different that a mind more sophisticated sees his pictures not only with the eyes of expectant and credulous youth, but also with some knowledge of the countries that he describes, there might well be for one a kind of pathos, an all-pervading sense of a changed world and a youth relinquished. There have been many travellers since Mark Twain. Flying machines and motor cars, telegrams and telephones, have brought the world so close to ones door that the first sense that one has when rereading this book is that one is revisiting a haunt of ancient peace absolutely impossible now for any tired and over-nervous traveller. The author of this book was having experiences that many, many travellers have had since, and they seemed to him at the time and to his first readers the last word in modern adventure. He would never have suspected that fifty years after it would wear so prim an aspect and that all the veils and encumbrances of the later years of the Good Queen should haunt those travellers to the very deeps of the farthest fastnesses. That very primness now gives this book an added charm. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. While the stated goal of the journey is to walk most of the way, the men find themselves using other forms of transport as they traverse the continent. The narrator (Twain) plays the part of the American tourist of the time, believing that he understands all that he sees, but in reality understanding none of it. The first half of the book covers their stay in south-western Germany (Heidelberg, Mannheim, a trip on the Neckar river, Baden-Baden and the Black Forest). The second part describes his travels through Switzerland and eastern France (Lucerne, Interlaken, Zermatt, Chamonix and Geneva). The end of the book covers his trip through several cities in northern Italy (Milan, Venice and Rome). Several other cities are touched and described during their travels, as well as mountains such as Matterhorn, the Jungfrau, the Rigi-Kulm and Mont-Blanc. Interleaved with the narration, Mark Twain inserted also stories not related to the trip, such as Bluejay Yarn, The Man who put up at Gadsby's and others; as well as many German Legends, partly invented by the author himself. Six appendices are included in the book. They are short essays dedicated to different topics. The role of The Portier in European hotels and how they make their living, a description of Heidelberg Castle, an essay on College Prisons in Germany, "The Awful German Language", a humorous essay on German language, a short story called "The Legend of the Castle" and finally a satirical description of German newspapers.

Charlemagne, while chasing the Saxons (as he said), or being chased by them (as they said), arrived at the bank of the river at dawn, in a fog. The enemy were either before him or behind him; but in any case he wanted to get across, very badly. He would have given anything for a guide, but none was to be had. Presently he saw a deer, followed by her young, approach the water. He watched her, judging that she would seek a ford, and he was right. She waded over, and the army followed. So a great Frankish victory or defeat was gained or avoided; and in order to commemorate the episode, Charlemagne commanded a city to be built there, which he named Frankfort-the ford of the Franks. None of the other cities where this event happened were named for it. This is good evidence that Frankfort was the first place it occurred at.
