Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Weaving together science, history, antiquarianism and art, this stimulating collection of essays amply demonstrates Thomas Pennant’s centrality to a broad range of British Enlightenment debates and discourses, especially those relating to Britain’s so-called “Celtic Fringe”. At the same time, it underscores the epistemological importance of travel and travel writing in the late eighteenth century.’ —Carl Thompson, Senior Lecturer in English, St Mary’s University, UK

This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Goshenhoppen registers of baptisms, marriages, and deaths are the sacramental records of the Catholic mission at Goshenhoppen, now Bally, in Washington Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Beginning in 1741, the year the mission was founded, and extending, with some gaps, to 1819, these include sacraments administered at Goshenhoppen and outlying missions in southeastern Pennsylvania, particularly in the counties of Berks, Bucks, Northampton, Montgomery, Lehigh, and Lebanon, an area containing much of the early Germanic population of the state. Goshenhoppen's registers are believed to be not only the oldest extant Catholic church registers in Pennsylvania, but the oldest in existence of the original thirteen colonies Hence their overriding importance in Pennsylvania-German history and genealogy and the reason for their original publication, between 1886 and 1950, in the Records of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia. Taken as a whole, the Goshenhoppen registers contain entries relating to about 4,000 baptisms, marriages, and deaths, with references to about 15,000 individuals. Added to this work for the first time is a complete name index.

Download or read book My Life as a Replica written by Sally Foster and published by Windgather Press. This book was released on 2020-04-29 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1970 a concrete replica of the St John’s Cross arrived in Iona sitting incongruously on the deck of a puffer delivering the island’s annual supply of coal. What is the story behind this intriguing replica? How does it relate to the world’s first ringed ‘Celtic cross’, an artistic and technical masterpiece, which has been at the heart of the Iona experience since the eighth century? What does it tell us about the authenticity and value of replicas? In this fascinating book, Foster and Jones draw on extensive interdisciplinary research to reveal the composite biography of the St John’s Cross, its concrete replica, and its many other scale copies. They show that replicas can acquire rich forms of authenticity and value, informed by social relations, craft practices, creativity, place and materiality. Thus, the book challenges traditional precepts that seek authenticity in qualities intrinsic to original historic objects. Replicas are shown to be important objects in their own right, with their own creative, human histories — biographies that people can connect with. The story of the St John’s Cross celebrates how replicas can ‘work’ for us if we let them, particularly if clues are available about their makers’ passion, creativity and craft.
Download or read book Landscape Literature and English Religious Culture 1660 1800 written by R. Mayhew and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-03-15 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landscape, Literature and English Religious Culture, 1660-1800 offers a powerful revisionist account of the intellectual significance of landscape descriptions during the 'long' Eighteenth-century. Landscape has long been a major arena for debate about the nature of Eighteenth-century English culture; this book surveys those debates and offers a provocative new account. Mayhew shows that describing landscape was a religiously contested practice, and that different theological positions led differing authors to different descriptive approaches. Landscape description, then, shows English intellectual life still in the grips of a Christian and classical mentality in the 'long' Eighteenth-century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel Writing and Ireland, 1760-1860 examines a range of mainly British travel and travel-writing material from the period 1760 to 1860. Beginning with an analysis of the Home Tour and Ireland's function within it, the book then considers the role of the Post-Union traveller, followed by an analysis of the impressions formed by Famine writers; the book then concludes with an assessment of those who journeyed to Ireland in the immediate aftermath of Famine. Following a chronological structure, Travel Writing and Ireland, 1760-1860 offers readings of hitherto under-researched material from a significant period in Irish history.
