Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Topographical Historical Description Boston Putting into Gomera, one of the most westerly of the Canary Islands, on the twelfth of August, for the purpose of repairs and refitting, these vessels sailed for the grand exploration on the sixth day of the next Sep tember. A sufficiently minute detail of the occurrences of this ever-memorable voyage is given by the eloquent and gifted historian of Columbus and his companions, Washington Irving; which being familiar to historical readers precludes the necessity of repeating in this connection any of the interesting particulars of the eventful passage. On the night of the eleventh of October, the eagle eye of the enthusiastic and ever-watchful Columbus dis covered a, small glimmering light, the harbinger of land so much desired; and which, on the morning of the next day, became apparent also to the eyes of the discouraged and almost rebellious voyagers, his com panions on the sea. At break of day, Columbus. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Description of the Topographical Model of Metropolitan Boston The model is best viewed from the east, as in the frontispiece, looking from the open ocean up through the harbor to Boston proper. The season is supposed to be summer, the time of day morning. The coloring, though necessarily conventional, is founded on a natural classification and treat ment, with values approximating those found under natural conditions. The model is based on the most accurate and detailed map yet produced of the area, compiled by the author from about three hundred of the latest maps, including the United States Coast Survey, United States Geological Survey, Metropolitan Park Commission, town, city, private and original surveys, photographically reduced or enlarged from the manuscript. Download or read book Report of the Commission on Marking Historical Sites of the City of Boston written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Commission on Marking Historical Sites of the City of Boston: 1924-1937 An appropriation of was provided by the City Council to carry on the work. Before the Commission had entered upon its labors, Mr. Appleton and Mr. Reade resigned and Judge Thomas H. Dowd and Judge David A. Lourie, justices of the Superior Court, were appointed to fill the vacancies. A searching study of the early history of Boston was immediately begun by the Commission. It was early realized that an exacting and laborious, though intensely interesting, task had been assumed. The march of progress with its attendant changes in the topography of the city had largely obliterated the original setting of early historic places and incidents. Many of the homes, meeting places and scenes of activity of the early colonists had been replaced from time to time by later structures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boston: Illustrated Boston was selected as the centre and metropolis of the Massachusetts Colony. The nucleus of the Colony was large, and the several towns lying along the coast were, considering the circumstances, rapidly settled. During the year 1630 as many as fifteen hundred persons came from England. In ten years not less than twenty thousand had been brought over. The records show that in 1639 there was a muster in Boston of the militia of the Colony to the number of a thousand able-bodied and well-armed men. It is impossible to learn accurately the population of Boston at any time during the first century after its settlement, since no enumeration was made; but there is authority for the statement that in 1674 there were about fifteen hundred families in the town, and the population of New England was then reckoned at one hundred and twenty thousand. The early history of Boston has been an almost inexhaustible field for the researches of local antiquaries. Considering that almost three quarters of a century elapse before the first newspaper was printed, the materials for making a complete account of the events that occurred, and for forming a correct estimate of the habits and mode of life of the people, are remarkably abundant. The records have been searched to good purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boston: The Place and the People The volumes of biography bearing directly upon Boston history are many. To these and to shorter memoirs of men and women whose lives have been identified with the place, the author is chiefly indebted for whatever flavor of reality his own pages have attained. How many persons and events he has been forced to ignore, or touch but lightly, the reader with the slenderest knowledge of the local records will detect. Others will recognize, as familiar friends, the most bountiful sources of information. The list of them would be long; and the writer must content himself with a special word of acknowledg ment to the text and references of the exhaustive Memorial History of Boston, edited by Justin Winsor, and to the shorter narrative, Boston, by the Hon. Henry Cabot Lodge. Finally to Mr. J. P. Quincy and Mr. Edwin M. Bacon, for their valuable com ments upon manuscript and proof, a peculiar debt is due. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In and About Historic Boston The military expeditions which marked Colonial New England as the land of an aggressive people received their inspiration in Boston, and recruited their strength largely from the sturdy citizens of Massachusetts Colony. It was in this section that the spirit of resistance to British tyranny found vent in action, rather than in words only. In Faneuil Hall, the Cradle of Liberty, the new spirit was truly nurtured and the city is fortunate in having preserved so much that is associated with the stirring times of the Tea Party, Bunker Hill, Paul Revere, and the famous Siege which ended when Washington fortified Dorchester Heights. The surrounding country is also rich in historical associations. To the south is Plymouth, where the Pilgrims landed in 1620, and Duxbury, the home of Standish; to the west are Lexington and Concord, where the first blood of the Revolution was shed, and the shot fired which was heard round the world; to the east are the historic towns of Lynn, Salem and Marblehead, where stirring scenes were enacted in pre-revolutionary times, and where the new has not been permitted to entirely obliterate the memories of the past.
