Book Dictionary of Altitudes in the Dominion of Canada

Download or read book Dictionary of Altitudes in the Dominion of Canada written by James White and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of Altitudes in the Dominion of Canada: With a Relief Map of Canada Sir, - I have the honour to transmit herewith my report entitled 'dictionary of Altitudes in the Dominion of Canada, ' accompanied by a relief map of the Dominion. On a scale of 100 miles to one inch. It is supplementary to my Altitudes in Canada, ' and should have formed Part 2 of that work, but, as its inclusion would have seriously delayed the publication of Part 1, and in view of the demand for such a publication, it was evident that the issuance of Part 1 as a complete work was the lesser evil. The first work, Altitudes in Canada, ' is more useful to civil engineers, but the arrangement is not a convenient one for the general public, particularly for anyone wishing to know the altitude, say of a railway station, and ignorant as to the name of the railway line on which it is situated. It is not presented as absolutely accurate but as the best possible interpretation of the conflicting evidence available at the present time. The figures given in each instance are based on what is considered to be the best authority, but in a few cases where the information at hand did not permit of discrimination, two determinations - with author ities - are given. The arrangement is alphabetical, by provinces and territories, the locality being given by counties in the case of the eastern provinces and by latitudes and longitudes in the territories and western provinces where the county system has not been adopted. The latitude and longitude have been taken from the latest maps and charts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book For the Encouragement of Learning

Download or read book For the Encouragement of Learning written by Myra Tawfik and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Encouragement of Learning addresses the contested history of copyright law in Canada, where the economic and reputational interests of authors and the commercial interests of publishers often conflict with the public interest in access to knowledge. It chronicles Canada’s earliest copyright law to explain how pre-Confederation policy-makers understood copyright’s normative purpose. Using government and private archives and copyright registration records, Myra Tawfik demonstrates that the nineteenth-century originators of copyright law intended to promote the advancement of learning in schools by encouraging the mass production of educational material. The book reveals that copyright laws were integral features of British North American education policy and highlights the important roles played by teachers, education reformers, and politicians in the emergence and development of the laws. It also explains how policy-makers began to consider the relationship between copyright and cultural identity formation once British interference into domestic copyright affairs increased, and as Canadian Confederation neared. Using methodologies at the intersection of legal history and book history, For the Encouragement of Learning embeds the copyright legal framework within the history of Canada’s book and print culture.

Book The Invasion of Canada by the Americans 1775 1776

Download or read book The Invasion of Canada by the Americans 1775 1776 written by Mark R. Anderson and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2016-03-14 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents never before published and translated Canadian Loyalist and American Patriot first-hand accounts of the Quebec Campaign of the Revolutionary War. The Invasion of Canada by the Americans, 1775–1776 offers two significant, insightful, and intriguing first-hand accounts of the Revolutionary War. These previously untranslated and unpublished primary sources provide contrasting viewpoints from a Loyalist French-Canadian administrative official, Jean-Baptiste Badeaux, and a Patriot Continental officer, William Goforth. Compelling personal interactions with friends and neighbors, and local and provincial-level leaders—as occupier and occupied—are documented. Their stories climax during the two-month period in early 1776 when Goforth was military governor of Three Rivers and Badeaux served as his somewhat reluctant interpreter and unofficial advisor. Including their experiences with Benedict Arnold and Quebec’s Governor Guy Carleton, as well as letters to Benjamin Franklin and John Jay, this unique book provides diverse insights into the invasion of Canada and its immediate impact on the people on both sides of the revolution.

Download or read book From Huronia to Wendakes written by Thomas Peace and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first contact with Europeans to the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, and the War of 1812, the Wendat peoples have been an intrinsic part of North American history. Although the story of these peoples—also known as Wyandot or Wyandotte—has been woven into the narratives of European-Native encounters, colonialism, and conquest, the Wendats’ later experiences remain largely missing from history. From Huronia to Wendakes seeks to fill this gap, countering the common impression that these peoples disappeared after 1650, when they were driven from their homeland Wendake Ehen, also known as Huronia, in modern-day southern Ontario. This collection of essays brings together lesser-known historical accounts of the Wendats from their mid-seventeenth-century dispersal through their establishment of new homelands, called Wendakes, in Quebec, Michigan, Ontario, Kansas, and Oklahoma. What emerges from these varied perspectives is a complex picture that encapsulates both the cultural resilience and the diversity of these peoples. Together, the essays reveal that while the Wendats, like all people, are ever-changing, their nations have developed adaptive strategies to maintain their predispersal culture in the face of such pressures as Christianity and colonial economies. Just as the Wendats have linked multiple Wendakes through migrations forced and voluntary, the various perspectives of these emerging scholars are knitted together by the shared purpose of filling in Wendat history beyond the seventeenth century. This approach, along with the authors’ collaboration with modern Wendat communities, has resulted in a rich and coherent narrative that in turn enriches our understanding of North American history.
