Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bertolt Brecht's Me-ti, which remained unpublished in his own lifetime, now appears for the first time in English. Me-ti counselled against 'constructing too complete images of the world'. For this work of fragments and episodes, Brecht accumulated anecdotes, poems, personal stories and assessments of contemporary politics. Given its controversial nature, he sought a disguise, using the name of a Chinese contemporary of Socrates, known today as Mozi. Stimulated by his humorous aphoristic style and social focus, as well as an engrained Chinese awareness of the flow of things, Brecht developed a practical, philosophical, anti-systematic ethics, discussing Marxist dialectics, Lenin, Hitler, Stalin, the Moscow trials, and the theories behind current events, while warning how ideology makes people the 'servants of priests'. Me-ti is central to an understanding of Brecht's critical reflections on Marxist dialectics and his commitment to change and the non-eternal, the philosophy which informs much of his writing and his most famous plays, such as The Good Person of Szechwan. Readers will find themselves both fascinated and beguiled by the reflections and wisdom it offers. First published in German in 1965 and now translated and edited by Antony Tatlow, Brecht's Me-ti: Book of Interventions in the Flow of Things provides readers with a much-anticipated accessible edition of this important work. It features a substantial introduction to the concerns of the work, its genesis and context - both within Brecht's own writing and within the wider social and political history, and provides an original selection and organisation of texts. Extensive notes illuminate the work and provide commentary on related works from Brecht's oeuvre.

Book excerpt: Comprehensive coverage of superconductivity from the Wiley Encyclopedia of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Engineering Superconductivity features fifty articles selected from the Wiley Encyclopedia of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, the one truly indispensable reference for electrical engineers. Superconductor technology has made highly advanced experiments possible in chemistry, biochemistry, particle physics, and health sciences, and introduced new applications currently in use in fields from medicine to cellular communications. Taken together, these articles-written by acknowledged experts in the field-provide the most complete and in-depth accounting of superconductivity in existence. The book brings together a wealth of information that would not be available to those who do not have access to the full 24-volume encyclopedia. This thorough survey looks at the application of superconductors from an engineer's practical perspective rather than a theoretical approach. Engineering Superconductivity provides full coverage of the fundamentals of superconducting behavior and explains the properties and fabrication methods of commercially produced superconductors. Up-to-date material on superconductor applications as well as competing technologies is included. The fifty articles presented here are divided into three sections: Superconductivity and magnetism Superconductors Applications and related technology Engineering Superconductivity is a complete and up-to-date reference for engineers, physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and anyone working with superconductors.

Book The Royal Inscriptions of Am l Marduk 561 560 BC Neriglissar 559 556 BC and Nabonidus 555 539 BC Kings of Babylon

Download or read book The Royal Inscriptions of Am l Marduk 561 560 BC Neriglissar 559 556 BC and Nabonidus 555 539 BC Kings of Babylon written by Frauke Weiershäuser and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2020-11-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amēl-Marduk (561–560 BC), Neriglissar (559–556 BC), and Nabonidus (555–539 BC) were the last native kings of Babylon. In this modern scholarly edition of the complete extant corpus of royal inscriptions from each of their reigns, Frauke Weiershäuser and Jamie Novotny provide updated and reliable editions of the texts. The kings of the Neo-Babylonian Empire left hundreds of official inscriptions on objects such as clay cylinders, bricks, paving stones, vases, and stelae. These writings, ranging from lengthy narratives enumerating the deeds of a monarch to labels identifying a ruler as the builder of a given structure, supplement and inform our understanding of the empire. Beginning with a historical introduction to the reigns of these three kings and the corpus of inscriptions, Weiershäuser and Novotny then present each text with an introduction, a photograph of the inscribed object, the Akkadian text in a newly collated transliteration, an English translation, catalogue data, commentary, and an updated bibliography. Additionally, Weiershäuser and Novotny provide new translations of several related Akkadian texts and chronicles. Featuring meticulous yet readable transliterations and translations that have been carefully collated with the originals, this book will be the standard edition for scholars and students of Assyriology, the Neo-Babylonian dialect, and the Neo-Babylonian Empire for decades to come.
