Book A Thousand Thoughts in Flight

Download or read book A Thousand Thoughts in Flight written by Maria Gabriela Llansol and published by Deep Vellum Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-16 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable collection of diary entries from cross-genre Portuguese author Maria Gabriela Llansol, which span dozens of diaries and 33 years. "She dedicated herself to this work regularly, at the same time, in the same place, and in almost the same position…” (The Book of Communities). Over the course of her life, Maria Gabriela Llansol wrote many thousands of pages. She left behind 70 diaries in all, which began in November 1974 and continued until 2007. Three of them were published during her lifetime. Diary I begins the day she finishes The Book of Communities and ends the day she finishes The Remaining Life, in 1977. Diary II picks up two years later, when she is finishing In the House of July and August and beginning the second trilogy. It follows her through the second trilogy and captures her first ideas for the Lisbonleipzig duology; it is here where Bach and Pessoa begin their encounter, in 1982. Diary III is less a diary than a mourning of the death of her friend, the Portuguese writer Virgílio Ferreira, one of the only contemporary writers with whom she felt any affinity, a mapping of their relationship and a conversation between them.

Book excerpt: Unlike conventional aviation authors and instructors I do not teach primary flying, crop dusting, pipeline patrol flying, bush flying, helicopter medical evacuation flying, and air to ground gunnery using instruments inside the aircraft as the primary situational awareness tool. Rather I teach Dutch rolls, slow flight and stalls over the runway, the energy management turns, use of ground effect on all takeoffs, the brisk walk apparent rate of closure approach, hover taxi in fixed wing aircraft, and low level low power mountain flying using sights, sounds, smells, and kinetics. Sight is used 99.9% of the time looking at the ground. Airspeed, nor any other instrument is used in takeoff or landing. This text teaches the art of flying in the old style at low level using ground references. Its author has over sixteen thousand hours of flying Army helicopters, crop dusters, and pipeline patrol airplanes at three feet to five hundred feet above ground level.

Book The Ghosts of Thua Thien

Download or read book The Ghosts of Thua Thien written by John A. Nesser and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drafted in October 1968, John A. Nesser left behind his wife and young son to fight in the controversial Vietnam War. Like many in his generation, he was deeply at odds with himself over the U.S. involvement in Vietnam, instilled with a strong sense of duty to his country but uncertain about its mission and his role in it. Nesser was deployed to the Ashau Valley, site of some of the war's heaviest fighting, and served eight months as an infantry rifleman before transferring to become a door gunner for a Chinook helicopter. In this stirring memoir, he recalls in detail the exhausting missions in the mountainous jungle, the terror of walking into an ambush, the dull-edged anxiety that filled quiet days, and the steady fear of being shot out of the sky. The accounts are richly illustrated with Nesser's own photographs of the military firebases and aircraft, the landscapes, and the people he encountered.

Book excerpt: This book is for anyone concerned with the meaning of our journey through Life. It is the story of a young man’s encounters with a Teacher of Truth – the ever present, ever hidden Way that supports Humanity. It is a testimony of the hopes, doubts, fears, thirst for knowledge and growth of a contemporary “Seeker”, played out against the backdrop of a provincial Italian town: A young boy’s sadness at his father’s early death prompts the first, unformed questions and yearnings to understand the mystery of life A young man’s faltering steps to encounter “spirituality” through Eastern disciplines A series of “coincidences” giving rise to extra-ordinary encounters with a Teacher of Truth, hidden, yet visible, “in” but not “of” the world It is a journey towards self-discovery and the Light that is in all of us, buried by our personalities and forgotten through our distractions and indifference. It is a journey towards the true Heart that, although almost forgotten, has never stopped calling. This book is testimony to the Teaching and to the Seeker’s experiences as a disciple and friend of an extraordinary Teacher, Alfredo, who represents and upholds the profound Work of the Way.

Book From the Cradle to the Pulpit

Download or read book From the Cradle to the Pulpit written by Aubrey C.H. Brown Jr. Th. D and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story we are about to embark upon is not just a historical event that was stored in the mental archives of the writers imagination. Rather, it is the solid collection of indisputable facts. These facts are the pillows of truth that have guided a chosen vessel of God toward his vocational occupation. This book is a synopsis of the writers life, from the cradle to the pulpit. This story is based on a biological sketch of the writers childhood, to include his family background, community description, early education, and religious upbringing. His conversion to Christianity and call to the pastoral ministry was the turning point of his adult life. He was now moving on a particular uncertain course, not willing to quietly surrender to the will of God and heed the call to the pulpit ministry. This was the time of his life when he sought to avoid pastoral obligations by attempting to ponder in the field of journalism. This was, of course, the treading upon dangerous grounds that would subsequently provoke the one who requires his service to take serious action to implore his indulgence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This genre falls under the category of Sci-fi fantasy thriller a works that is just as exciting as the adventures of Lora Croft in “Tomb Raiders” I chose this genre to create characters that exist outside of the everyday urban-scape theme. One of the main characters is a black woman; a seasoned sea captain for example. I wanted to create another kind of hero, in another part of the world, on another kind of mission based on another mindset; more of a West African theme influenced by the folklore of the ancient Yoruba of Southwestern Nigeria which is deeply submerged in cosmological and celestial influences and is viewed as individual characteristic energies expressing themselves universally in allegorical narratives. These legends tend to be older then Western civilization. I wanted the story to be unique and the characters just as unique. This is a story told by the ancestors of the war in heaven before the creation of man...this a story of the battle of illumination and darkness the fight to maintain balance between good and evil.

Download or read book Big Week written by Bill Yenne and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In just six days, the United States Strategic Air Forces changed the course of military offense in World War II. During those six days, they launched the largest bombing campaign of the war, dropping roughly ten thousand tons of bombs in a rain of destruction that would take the skies back from the Nazis . . . The Allies knew that if they were to invade Hitler’s Fortress Europe, they would have to wrest air superiority from the mighty Luftwaffe. The plan of the Unites States Strategic Air Forces was extremely risky. During the week of February 20, 1944—and joined by the RAF Bomber Command—the USAAF Eighth and Fifteenth Air Force bombers took on this vital mission. They ran the gauntlet of the most heavily defended air space in the world to deal a death blow to Germany’s aircraft industry and made them pay with the planes already in the air. In the coming months, this Big Week would prove a deciding factor in the war. Both sides were dealt losses, but whereas the Allies could recover, damage to the Luftwaffe was irreparable. Thus, Big Week became one of the most important episodes of World War II and, coincidentally, one of the most overlooked—until now.
