Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Thousand Miles' Walk Across South America When, a few weeks since, I saw my little book of South American travels issued from the press, I supposed that my connection with it had ended. My publishers now ask for a preface to a second edition. I take this occasion to express my thanks for the very kind manner in which my boyish descriptions of a boy's travels have been received by the public and the press. I can only wish that my book had been more worthy of the liberal patronage and the generous praise which have been bestowed upon it. If I had followed my own inclinations, I should have given my narrative a thorough revision, and thus have corrected some of the crudeness of my first literary effort. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Across Unknown South America, Vol. 1 of 2 South America is, to my mind, the Coming Conti nent -the Continent of the future. Everybody knows the wealth of the Argentine, Peru, Chile, and Bolivia; but the interior of Brazil, the largest and richest country of all, not unlike forbidden Tibet, was perhaps better known a century or two ago than now. Few people realize that Brazil is larger than the United States of North America, Germany, Portugal, and a few other countries taken together. The interior is practically a term incognita - although the ancient Jesuits and, at a later date, escaped slaves and native rubber collectors have perhaps found their way inland to a considerable distance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Way Round South America: From Manuscript, Notes and Letters Our freight ship chose to sail in the early morning, so we went aboard at night after the theater, a curious sort of time to go to sea. The wind blew fresh and the stars shone bright as we crossed the ferry, a favorable omen it seemed to us for our long journey. It was unkind of fate, was it not, to start us away from so unromantic a quarter as Hoboken, we two honeymooners? Hoboken does not sound well, and we dwelt in preference on the aristocratic title of our steam ship, the Patricia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South America That is an experience which, I feel sure, even the most adventuresome of you will consider worthy of being called exciting. You have, I hope, gleaned a rough, general idea that the highways of South America traverse very different country from that in which you are accustomed to find roads, railways, and rivers, and that the great difference in surroundings means you will be travelling on water ways that Nature has fashioned under peculiarly inter esting conditions, and by overland routes which could never have been brought into existence unless numbers of men had pluckily fought many a gallant fight with brains and muscles to overcome extraordinarily difficult obstacles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from To Hell and Back: My Trip to South America Ell has been glowingly described as a popular and populous place and since I had so Often been told to go there I bought a ticket for South America. Chicago was our first stop. The city divides honor With bean-eating Boston as a windy burg, puffing itself up with pride over What it should be most ashamed. The herd Of humanity rushes here like cattle to Armour's slaughter house, to become food for jails, hospitals, poorhouses, asylums and cemeteries. Shelley - said Hell was a city very much like London, but then he never saw Chicago. From what I saw and heard, If Christ came to Chicago he must have left on the next train. Book Under the Southern Cross in South America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Under the Southern Cross in South America Classic Reprint written by Williamson Buckman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Southern Cross in South America Until comparatively recent times - only a few years back - South America was regarded by the great majority outside its confines as the least known and, therefore, least understood part of the world; and North Americans looked upon it as the part from which least might be expected as far as their own interests were concerned. Journalists and newspaper men were accustomed to picture it as a mysterious land whose chief productions were deadly fevers and frequent insurrections. Indeed, in most cases, when the press mentioned it the purpose was only to chronicle some sanguinary revolution or outburst of border warfare. Several reasons contributed to keep South America in the background and leave it an unappreciated and neglected continent. In the first place its situation was against its becoming more familiar to northern lands. It stretches to the Far South, entirely away from the usual lines of travel and the beaten paths of the ordinary tourist. Few Americans have inclination or time to make personal acquaintance with the peoples and countries below the northern rim of the earth, where the Southern Cross shimmers overhead and where Christmas comes in the heat of summer and July the Fourth occurs in the middle of winter. In the next place our Monroe Doctrine kept foreign hands off this section of the Western Hemisphere; it prevented the European Powers from making it a battle-ground for the acquisition of new territory; hence, no diplomatic problems presented themselves for solution to bring the country to public attention, - it was kept isolated, as it were, from foreign entanglements, a good thing in one way, but harmful in another, as relegating it to its own obscurity. In the third place the ephemeral revolutions did not jeopardize in general the lives or property of foreigners, and consequently, our State Department was not called upon to interfere in the settlement of domestic or foreign claims; it is only very lately that its aid has been invoked in this respect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Weeks in South America TO the few friends for whom alone these pages are destined, I need not apologize for the many literary imperfections which they doubtless contain. My object has been to record plainly and briefly the sights which I have seen, and the impressions which naturally suggested themselves to my mind, during a visit to a part of the world whose beauties are as yet unhackneyed by tourists, and where adventure and novelty may still be found in travel. Book A Pleasure Pilgrim in South America Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Pleasure Pilgrim in South America Classic Reprint written by C. D. Mackellar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pleasure Pilgrim in South America Tums letters are but a mere record of the writer's tour in South America. It is a continent little known to the globe-trotter, but which well repays a visitor for a considerable amount of dis comfort, and is a distinct change from other better known lands. Friends amused and interested by letters describing lands practically new to them urged the publication, and they may be of use to others following in the writer's footsteps, and who, like him, are unable to obtain much practical in formation, as difficult to obtain in South America as out of it. The writer most gratefully acknowledges the great kindness and thoughtfulness of Mrs Beauclerk, wife of the late Mr W. N. Beauclerk, His Majesty's Minister to Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, and the useful and practical advice she sent him for his guidance, and which was worth all the rest of the information and advice he received put together. Anyone about to travel in these lands, especially when ladies are of the party, would be wise to provide themselves with ordinary comforts, and amongst other things a tea-basket with its equip ment would be a real comfort and luxury.
