Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Theory of Wit and Humour In describing this book as a work on wit and humour, I have employed the words in the com mon acceptation and in their most comprehensive sense; using the term wit to describe all those ideas to which the word may with any propriety be applied, including what is known as bad and indifferent wit, and humour as applying to all risible ideas whatsoever, some of which would be universally accepted as humour, some whose title to the name, while more or less valid, is less unquestioned, while the remainder usually pass by such names as ludicrousness, incongruity, grotesqueness, buffoonery. Further, my theory, as will be seen, presents a certain extension of the province of the risible as ordinarily under stood. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1890 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V. ON INGENUITY IN GENERAL, AND CIRCUMSTANTIAL NOVELTY. The ingenuity with which a theory of wit and humour is concerned relates, with a few such exceptions as mother wit and various other ideas of practical value, to phases mainly interesting the intellectual sense of persons in general. As stated in the synopsis in Chapter II., which I recapitulate in various particulars, it comprises three species. The first, which will be designated throughout the book by the term, ingenuity of the first species, is the discovery, by special search, of various ideas, to be enumerated in detail later on, and of which a general description has been given in the synopsis. The second species, which may be otherwise designated as conscious invention (a term appropriate because the like phases to those discovered by this species of ingenuity are often produced in unconsciousness of their risible nature), is the discovery, by special search, of risible phases, with or without circumstantial novelty No. 1 (circumstantial novelty from the presence of an excuse for imperfection) for jocular exhibition in one's self, or for ascription to fictitious personages, as in novels, or fictitiously, to existing persons. It is often convenient (as giving a certain excuse for the joke) when presenting a phase of circumstantial novelty No. 2 opposed to common sense, to profess belief in the full propriety--the conformity with common sense--of such presentation. This profession, when it is an ostensible mental inferiority and not a nominal falsehood, * would be a phase of conscious invention, though of course one of a fixed and uniform character, and wholly without interest in itself. The third species is the discovery, by special search, of phases, risible or..

Book Wit Humor and Shakespeare

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wit, Humor, and Shakespeare: Twelve Essays This subject is best reached from the point of reflecting that, of all the animals, man alone appears to be capable of laughter. If, as so many naturalists now claim, man has ascended by successive evolutions of varieties from a lower animal type, we ought to be able to find some germs of the laughing propensity among our ancestors. The first witness we summon on this question is the anatomist, because the physical expression that accompanies an act of laughter depends upon the connection of the respiratory nerves with the diaphragm below and the orbicular and straight muscles of the mouth above. But these muscles are not perfectly developed in the animals. When dogs are fondly gambolling about you, there is "a slight eversion of the lips," which is a rudimentary hint of man's facial expression in an act of mirth. The dog has been the associate of human moods in all countries, and for thousands of years; yet, although we arc told that "the little dog laughed to see the sport," he has not yet made up his mouth for any thing more emphatic than a simper. Eulenspiegel asked the king if he was minded to keep his word well and truly, and the king did answer most solemnly, Yes. Now did Eulenspiegel ride his horse to a goldsmith, by whom he suffered to be beaten upon the horse's hoofs shoes of gold with silver nails. This done, Eulenspiegel went to the king, that the king might send his treasurer to pay for the shoeing. The treasurer believed he Should pay a black smith, but Eulenspiegel conducted him to the goldsmith, who did require and demand one hundred Danish marks. This would the treasurer not pay, but went and told his master. Therefore the king caused Eulenspiegel to be summoned into his presence, and spoke to him: Eulenspiegel, why did you have such costly shoes? Were I to shoe all my horses thus, soon would I be without land or any possessions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wit and Humor: Full of the Most Laughable Humor and Sparkling Wit, and the Funniest Collection Ever Published Laughter, too, shows the sunny side of a man. It blooms out in a ruddy glow his happier nature and. floods a sea of pleasant sunshine upon his associates. It has been said by some one, that wit and humor are stupid and useless, but happily for this world such beings are few and far between, and, like a needle in a mill-pond, are not missed. Such beings are blunt to human nature and to its many delightful illustrations that abound in the mines of fun and pleasantry. To them we would inscribe the poetical lines of Shakspere. Book Why We Laugh Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Why We Laugh The idea which prompted this volume was to string such humors as were illustrative, upon some philosophic threads, which had been floating in my mind. Has not humor a philosophy of its own - physical, mental, and moral? It is said by Hazlitt, in his article on wit and humor, that you can not give a reason why you laugh that people must laugh of themselves, or not at all. Without denying that we laugh with spontaneous impulse, and sometimes the more, at any restraint upon this impulse, yet the very categories of the critic himself prove that the laugh has a rational philosophy. They answer the Horatian query Quid Rides? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Laughter and Comedy Most of the philosophers and psychologists who have addressed themselves to the subject Of laughter, have dashed boldly into the midst Of it, and there dealt about them manfully with the weapons that came to hand. I 'am, I confess it, Of a fainter heart, and would lay out and take the measure Of the weapons to be used in the fray. For in truth the subject Of laughter is a battle-ground, strewn with the bodies Of heroes and encumbered with the debris of many a brave system Of philosophy. It is prudent to reconnoitre the field before adventuring. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Sense of Humor Classic Reprint written by Max Eastman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sense of Humor This may seem a remote opening for a book about humor, but it happens that the problem of humor has always been a special field of play for the irresponsible essay-writer, and the literature that adorns it is no toriously inconsequential. When I told Bernard Shaw that I was writing this book, he advised me to go to a sanitarium. There is no more dangerous literary symptom, he said, than a temptation to write about wit and humor. It indicates the total loss of both. And with a proper emphasis upon the word literary, that is entirely true. But if technical science con tinnes to develop as it has in the last half-century, and men of letters continue not to develop, it will soon be true that there is no more dangerous literary symptom than a temptation to write about any problem of gen eral knowledge. People will take our Plays seriously, but not our Prefaces - not our essays, epigrams, and immortal disquisitions. These they will glance through with an indulgent smile, and then go look the thing up in a laboratory report and find out what the truth is.
