Book A Theory of the Tache in Nineteenth Century Painting

Download or read book A Theory of the Tache in Nineteenth Century Painting written by ?stein Sj?ad and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without question, the tache (blot, patch, stain) is a central and recurring motif in nineteenth-century modernist painting. Manet's and the Impressionists? rejection of academic finish produced a surface where the strokes of paint were presented directly, as patches or blots, then indirectly as legible signs. C?nne, Seurat, and Signac painted exclusively with patches or dots. Through a series of close readings, this book looks at the tache as one of the most important features in nineteenth-century modernism. The tache is a potential meeting point between text and image and a pure trace of the artist?s body. Even though each manifestation of tacheism generates its own specific cultural effects, this book represents the first time a scholar has looked at tacheism as a hidden continuum within modern art. With a methodological framework drawn from the semiotics of text and image, the author introduces a much-needed fine-tuning to the classic terms index, symbol, and icon. The concept of the tache as a ?crossing? of sign-types enables finer distinctions and observations than have been available thus far within the Peircean tradition. The ?sign-crossing? theory opens onto the whole terrain of interaction between visual art, art criticism, literature, philosophy, and psychology.

Book The History of Painting from the Fourth to the Early Nineteenth Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of Painting from the Fourth to the Early Nineteenth Century Classic Reprint written by Richard Muther and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-04-16 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Painting From the Fourth to the Early Nineteenth Century While the first named work is practically confined to the nineteenth century, of which it is the standard history, the latter treats the entire develop ment of European painting from the downfall of the antique world to the early nineteenth century, ending therefore where the former begins. But although it is more general in treatment and less prolix in detail than the earlier work, it is equally brilliant in style and interesting in conception. For it represents the consistent application to this more extensive period of the author's interesting theory of the interpretation of the great styles of painting from the psychology of the age in which they originated. Book Harald Sohlberg

Download or read book Harald Sohlberg written by Marianne Yvenes and published by Hirmer Verlag GmbH. This book was released on 2018 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Majestic and magical landscapes, the soft beauty of fields of flowers, the raw cold of winter: the works of Harald Sohlberg combine a Romantic perception of nature with a contemporary pictorial language akin to Symbolism. This volume assembles some 60 paintings, in addition to a number of drawings, prints and photographs by the artist and grants insight into his conceptual world through his correspondence.0In particular the mountain world surrounding Rondane National Park provided Harald Sohlberg (1869?1935) with inexhaustible inspiration for countless studies and watercolours which were later incorporated into his landscape pictures. This volume places one of his most famous works, 'Winter Night in the Mountains', in a new context and casts light on less well-known aspects of Sohlberg?s oeuvre, which also includes street scenes, for example. One characteristic of his works that is particularly attractive is the lack of people in them - not least because their traces always appear present. This reveals a critical attitude to the modern age and at the same time allows the viewer to become immersed in his or her own stories.00Exhibition: National Gallery, Oslo, Norway (29.9.2018 - 13.1.2019) / Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, UK (13.2. - 2.6.2019) / Museum Wiesbaden, Germany (12.7. - 27.10.2019).

This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Painting From the Fourth to the Early Nineteenth Century, Vol. 2 of 2 The acquisitions of those who extended the bounds of the empire are inherited by those who come after them. As in the middle of the fifteenth century Gozzoli had adopted the results of the investigations of Castagno and Uccello, and all the achievements of the next generation were used by Ghirlandajo; so the great profiteur of the sixteenth century is named Raphael. In examining Raphael's portraits of himself one indeed feels a certain personal element of his style. This youth with the intelligent, sympathetic features, the bare neck, and the long artist's locks; with the pure, soft girlish eyes like those of Perugino's Madonnas, corresponds to Vasari's picture of Raphael's personality: "Every evil humour vanished when his comrades saw him, every low thought fled from their minds; and this was because they felt themselves vanquished by his affability and beautiful nature." Book excerpt: In The Work of Art, Anthea Callen analyzes the self-portraits, portraits of fellow artists, photographs, prints, and studio images of prominent nineteenth-century French Impressionist painters, exploring the emergence of modern artistic identity and its relation to the idea of creative work. Landscape painting in general, she argues, and the “plein air” oil sketch in particular were the key drivers of change in artistic practice in the nineteenth century—leading to the Impressionist revolution. Putting the work of artists from Courbet and Cézanne to Pissaro under a microscope, Callen examines modes of self-representation and painting methods, paying particular attention to the painters’ touch and mark-making. Using innovative methods of analysis, she provides new and intriguing ways of understanding material practice within its historical moment and the cultural meanings it generates. Richly illustrated with 180 color and black-and-white images, The Work of Art offers fresh insights into the development of avant-garde French painting and the concept of the modern artist.
