There was a genuine, open, and extremely fru- ful interaction between the experimentalists and theoreticians which made the workshop a success. Book excerpt: Dictyostelium Discoideum: A Developmental System presents D. discoideum as a model eukaryotic system to study a variety of developmental problems. The book describes the life cycle of the organism D. discoideum which exists in nature as a soil amoeba in forest detritus. The nuclei of D. discoideum contain DNA, RNA, and proteins which have properties similar to those of histones present in calf thymus nuclei. The unique sequences of the genome of the organism code for the gene products synthesize during its growth and development. One approach in genetic analyses to understanding the developmental processes of the organism is to isolate a large number of morphological mutants. The isolation process will indicate the number of variations that are open to the developing system, and will point to causal connections between stages. The text also explains that the number of cells which differentiate into stalk cells is the result of timing and mechanics of the process of culmination. Ashworth (1971) suggests that cells in pseudoplasmodia of D. discoideum adjust their positions in relation to the chemical structure of the sheath itself. A model shows how cells communicate their response to the sheath in an axial fashion. The book can prove beneficial for biochemists, micro-biologists, cellular researchers, and investigators involved in the study of cellular biology.

Book excerpt: Why should the gene be suggested to be inconstant when the contrary view, that gene structure is invariant except through mutagenic processes induced by potent external factors, has long been a universal doctrine of genetics? Indeed, during the early part of the present century before mutation was recognized as being of general occurrence, the seeming unvarying nature of the gene led to skepticism regarding the validity of the evolutionary theory; only later could the origins of the morphological differences between individuals and species be attributed to a combination of mutation and evolution, involving natural forces selecting between favorable and unfavorable genetic changes. But during the past several decades, as knowledge of the macromolecular constitution of or ganisms has increased to the point where even the primary structures of the genes themselves are being revealed on a routine basis, it has become increas ingly difficult to ascribe all the resulting observations to ordinary mutagenesis and natural selection. Some more profound mechanism often seems to be present that influences both the constancy and inconstancy of the genes, an ap paratus whose existence this study hopes to reveal. In seeking to demonstrate the universality of this mechanism, data are sought through the numerous activities of organisms of many types wherever gene action changes are manifest.

The author argues that the controversial concept of multilevel selection is essential to biological evolution, a proposition set to stimulate new debate. The idea of one collective unit emerging from the cooperative interactions of its constituent (and mutually competitive) parts has its roots in the ancient world. More recently, it has illuminated studies of animal behavior, and played a controversial role in evolutionary biology. In Part I, the author explores the historical development of the idea of a collectivity in biological systems, from early speculations on the sociology of human crowd behavior, through the mid-twentieth century debates over the role of group selection in evolution, to the notion of the selfish gene. Part II investigates the balance between competition and cooperation in a range of contemporary biological problems, from flocking and swarming to experimental evolution and the evolution of multicellularity. Part III addresses experimental studies of cooperation and competition, as well as controversial ideas such as the evolution of evolvability and Stephen Jay Gould’s suggestion that “spandrels” at one level of selection serve as possible sources of variability for the next higher level. Finally, building on the foundation established in the preceding chapters, the author arrives at a provocative new proposition: as a result of the essential tension between competition and cooperation, multiple levels may be essential in order for evolutionary processes to occur at all.
