Book The Argument of Psellos Chronographia

Download or read book The Argument of Psellos Chronographia written by Anthony Kaldellis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a philosophical interpretation of Michael Psellos' Chronographia, an acknowledged masterpiece of Byzantine literature. Anthony Kaldellis argues that although the Chronographia contains a fascinating historical narrative; it is really a disguised philosophical work which, if read carefully, reveals Psellos' revolutionary views on politics and religion. Kaldellis exposes the rhetorical techniques with which Psellos veils his unorthodoxy, and demonstrates that the inner message of the text challenges the Church's supremacy over the intellectual and political life of Byzantium. Psellos consciously articulates a secular vision of Imperial politics, and seeks to liberate philosophy from the constraints of Christian theology. The analysis is lucid and should be accessible to anyone with a general knowledge of Byzantine civilization. It should interest all who study the history of ancient and medieval philosophy.

Book excerpt: The fourth volume of The New Cambridge Medieval History covers the eleventh and twelfth centuries, which comprised perhaps the most dynamic period in the European middle ages. This is a history of Europe, but the continent is interpreted widely to include the Near East and North Africa. The volume is divided into two parts of which this, the second, deals with the course of events - ecclesiastical and secular - and major developments in an age marked by the transformation of the position of the papacy in a process fuelled by a radical reformation of the church, the decline of the western and eastern empires, the rise of western kingdoms and Italian elites, and the development of governmental structures, the beginnings of the recovery of Spain from the Moors and the establishment of western settlements in the eastern Mediterranean region in the wake of the crusades.

Book C P Cavafy Historical Poems

Download or read book C P Cavafy Historical Poems written by J. Phillipson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-08-02 with total page 847 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cavafy's Historical Poems is the first volume of a four-book set constituting a study of the life and opus of this fascinating poet. The second volume is an anecdotal life detailing Cavafys home and its atmosphere: the man, the poet, and his lifestyle; the odes of his compatriot partisans; the praises of his foreign admirers; the barbs and insults of his critics and revilers; the poet as a critical ironist; and the last part of his life. More than one hundred commentators are quoted, and just as many of his poems are used where it seemed appropriate. A third volume consists of erratic commentaries containing the authors evaluation and criticism of the main contributions to Cavafys poetry. That is these of George Seferis, Sir Maurice Bowra, Robert Liddel, Edmund Keeley, Grigorios Xenopoulos, Timos Malanos, Stratis Tsirkas, John Sareyiannis, and others. These follow an opening chapter on Hellenization and a second chapter on the controversial subject of the dates of composition of Cavafys poems. The fourth volume, The Canon, is a verse translation of the 150 poems Cavafy accepted as his mature opus, including the original Greek verses, accompanied by detailed examination of the poets craft and style. That is to say the meter, length of verse, wedging, rhyme, enjambment, titles, organization, punctuation, the absences, lyricism, periphrasis, description, narrative, suggestive image, abstractions, transmission, maturity, content, language, irony, intellectuality, etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical Knowledge approaches the topic of historical knowledge in depth and from various angles. It seeks to offer theoretical and methodological building blocks for the use of anyone pursuing historical research. This book brings novel insights into classic and topical issues currently under debate: the importance of theory in historical thinking, the dialectic of “text” and “annotation”, the actor and observer levels, the relationship between the general and the individual, the issue of comparison, and the problem of sporadic sources and of understanding the singularity of each one. The overall theme of the book, the possibility of historical knowledge, reflects the very issue that makes historical research distinctive: the challenges of evidence and the problems, both concrete and conceptual, with deciphering and interpreting remnants of the past. This book refreshes the discussion about sources and proper evidence, two issues that the linguistic turn and the postmodern challenge pushed into the background. The book addresses these issues in an easily accessible way and serves as an introduction and guide to the role of theory, method and evidence in historical research not only for students and scholars of history, but also for anyone outside the field with an interest in the topic. Historical Knowledge is the first book to include texts by the three eminent historians, Professors Natalie Zemon Davis, Carlo Ginzburg and Giovanni Levi. The other contributors, Professors Risto Alapuro, Janken Myrdal and Matti Peltonen, are active debaters in current theoretical and methodo-logical discussion.
