Book excerpt: This dissertation discusses some of the turbulence models employed here: an assumption that the turbulent viscosity of the dispersed phase equals that of the continuous phase; a two-phase modified k $-\varepsilon$ model used for both phases and another model with a variable turbulent Prandtl number (i.e., ratio of the turbulent viscosity of the distributed phase to that of the continuous phase) based on Tchen's theory (1947) of a particle in a turbulent stream.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental and theoretical study of heat transfer and flow in a rotating duct is under development at ONERA. The duct simulates in a simplified manner an internal cooling passage of the blade of a turbine rotor. It has been experimentally demonstrated that the rotational velocity causes an increase in thermal exchange by convection in the duct. This phenomenon is explained by secondary flows due to Coriolis force. The theoretical aspect of the work involves the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensions (time marching, ADI method). For both laminar and turbulent flows, the results obtained demonstrate the significance of secondary structures (having both two and four vortices). Also, by using a rotation-curvature analogy, visualisation of the flow with air or hydrogen bubbles in a water duct gives rise to the same flow structures.

Download or read book Characterisation of Turbulent Duct Flows written by Bayode Owolabi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents several new findings in the field of turbulent duct flows, which are important for a range of industrial applications. It presents both high-quality experiments and cutting-edge numerical simulations, providing a level of insight and rigour rarely found in PhD theses. The scientific advancements concern the effect of the Earth’s rotation on large duct flows, the experimental confirmation of marginal turbulence in a pressure-driven square duct flow (previously only predicted in simulations), the identification of similar marginal turbulence in wall-driven flows using simulations (for the first time by any means) and, on a separate but related topic, a comprehensive experimental study on the phenomenon of drag reduction via polymer additives in turbulent duct flows. In turn, the work on drag reduction resulted in a correlation that provides a quantitative prediction of drag reduction based on a single, measurable material property of the polymer solution, regardless of the flow geometry or concentration. The first correlation of its kind, it represents an important advancement from both a scientific and practical perspective.
