In some form it has existed in the nation almost from the beginning. In 1621 Governor Bradford made provision for a day Of rejoicing after the gathering Of the first harvest by the New England colonists. In 1623 a drought prevailed, and a day of fasting was ap pointed. The rain came while prayers were rising, and the day was promptly changed to one of thanksgiving. The governors of the colonies fixed the custom for our people. During the Revolutionary War, Congress annually recommended a day Of thanksgiv ing. In 1864 President Lincoln sent forth a proclamation for a national thanksgiving, and the example of the Great Commoner has been followed by all of his successors in the Presidency. Y., August 6th, 1863 The words of the text amount in substance to a strong, imprecatory pledge of religious faithfulness to God, and patriotic devotion to that land which is the gift of God. The Israelites had been sinful; had displeased God and departed from his laws. As a consequence, they had grown timid and imbecile. Their valor had ed they were not, like their fathers of old, able to conquer giants; they were often and signally defeated; the fastnesses of their hill country no longer availed them against their enemies they had no Gideon to strike for them with his awful battle cry; they had no Samson warrior to match his single arm against the foes' haughty host; they had no boy David to deliver them by a pebble from the brook. As we go to our homes, and feast upon the abundance of God's bounties, let a Spirit of praise pervade our souls. Agriculturally, our land is teeming with fatness; pecuniarly, the national credit never assumed a higher status; commercially, our present prosperity should fill us with wonder; nationally, the tokens of God's goodness are innumerable. Eell's Thanksgiving Sermon Again, we readily commend, of course, our author's notice of God's preserving care. He has kept us from the strife of arms - from the ravages of disease - and feasted us with blessings such as no other hand could provide, and no other heart had a disposition to afford. In all these features of the discourse are we agreed. God is our pro tector. The Bible is our chart and compass too. Our union has many advantages, and affords many blessings, and with all its faults we love it still and had the preacher persevered in this strain throughout his discourse, we should have allowed his production to have passed without notice. But he does not thus persevere; and where is the issue between us? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An;, At Camp Todd, Macon, Missouri, Nov, 28, 1861, and a Sketch of the Regiment O, give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good. - Ps. cxviii: 1. Every duty which God requires of his creatures is perfectly reasonable. As moral and accountable beings, we are the subjects of the Divine government; our homage, and our obedience to Gods authority and law, are righteous and reasonable demands. As dependent creatures, receiving every good and perfect gift from his kind and bountiful hand, gratitude and thanksgiving should flow from every heart, and burden the utterances of every tongue. To-day, in nineteen of these United States, in accordance with a time-honored usage, the people, by the Governors of their respective States, have been invited to lay aside the cares and business of life, to think of the manifold blessings of Divine Providenee, and at their homes and Christian sanctuaries, to offer fervent prayer and grateful acknowledgements to our Heavenly Father, for his abundant goodness and plenteous mercy. Book Our Mercies of Re Occupation

Download or read book Our Mercies of Re Occupation written by Phillips Brooks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Mercies of Re-Occupation: A Thanksgiving Sermon, Preached at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Philadelphia, November 26, 1863 I have selected this passage for our text to-day, because, as I stand and look back over these last two years, I can find no truer description of the mercy that has filled them than just this - that it is the mercy of re-occupation. You will not find one natural blessing that we have not enjoyed for years. There is not an acre of our country now that was not ours in 1860. There is no principle of public law or social duty that was not written in our books three years ago. We hold no theories Of virtue or of truth that our fathers did not hold and leave described for us most explicitly. There is no new realm of life; but yet I believe, and I shall try to Show, that all through these last years, and espe cially through this last year, there has been a great drawing back of all of us to resume and fully occupy realms of life, blessings and duties which were never but half-occupied before. I hope to make this simple thought more plain as I go on, and to prove that I am right in stating as our appropriate subject for today, Our Mercies of Re-occupation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Willing Reunion Not Impossible: A Thanksgiving Sermon Preached at St. Paul's, Brookline, November 26, 1863 It is the usage of the divine Word to speak of God's mystery as the believer's peace. Concealment, we are told, is a part of the glory of God; and the very darkness, therefore, in which our path may be enfolded, leads us to trust in God, who is in the cloud. "Thou canst not see my face," said God to Moses, "for there shall no man see me and live." "And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a cleft of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand as I pass by," - hiding thus from the creature the movement of the Creator, even when the Creator is most near. So the apostle cries, - "Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
