The field of Anatomy and Physiology is too large to be treated adequately in a textbook of less than several volumes. No nurse can or need become acquainted with the Whole field, but she should know pretty well those parts which border on her own experience. The training school may then with propriety seek to make the nurse thoroughly famil iar with a very few fundamental and typical phenomena such as may be presented in a little book, and furthermore it should encourage her to work up her cases from the larger reference books just as the doctor does, although of course in much less detail and from a somewhat different stand point. If she has thoroughly grasped the rudiments of the subject, this procedure will be an easy and pleasant one. This is no new-fangled notion, for the case method of teaching law and medical students is an old story. The case method has among other advantages this very obvious one, that the facts acquired in this way are a much more permanent acquisition than is the case when they are served cold, so to speak, in a lesson book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology for Nurses Some years ago the author wrote an "Elementary Physiology for Teachers," the aim of which was to give prominence to those anatomical and physiological peculiarities of children with which it is important for teachers to be acquainted, but which are seldom referred to in small text-books intended for the general reader. The present volume is an adaptation of the earlier work to the needs of nurses. Various sections whose importance was chiefly educational have been omitted; paragraphs, sections, and chapters nave been added; and in parts otherwise unaltered a good many technical terms which were unnecessary in a book for teachers but which nurses are likely to hear in the course of their training have been included. Many references to the special features of childhood have. been retained, partly because children form a considerable proportion of the patients of most nurses, and partly because so many nurses are being drawn into the service of the educational authorities. Since the publication of "Physiology for Teachers," important advances have been made in our knowledge in various departments of physiology, e.g. regarding the functions of some of the ductless glands, the part played by "hormones," and cerebral localisation. Care has therefore been taken to bring the present volume up to date. At the same time it has seemed best to adhere to orthodox teaching with respect to questions still under debate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Anatomy for Nurses In making this revision of the Anatomy for Nurses, the opportunity has been embraced for extending the scope of the book to include more definitely the subject of Physiology, in recognition of the demand that a further knowledge of that branch be included in the equipment of the well-trained nurse. To present under one cover, with the necessary brevity and still with sufficient clearness, these two important branches of study (each of which should have a volume by itself) is not a simple task, but it has been undertaken with the hope that the combined Anatomy and Physiology for Nurses will meet the need created by the advanced requirements of the present time. It has seemed better to refer the student to the glossary for the meanings of unfamiliar words than to interrupt the text by too frequent definitions, therefore the glossary is enlarged and its definitions are made more descriptive. The order of subjects is necessarily changed as new material has been added. The number of chapters is increased, and certain topics, such as Foods and Digestion, Development, Repair and Functions of Bones, the Lymphatic System, and the Nervous System have been elaborated, and the whole so arranged that by the association of structure and function in the various parts of the body, a better comprehension of both may be attained. The index has been carefully revised, with suitable additions in accordance with the text. An extensive correspondence with Hospital and Training School Superintendents has elicited several suggestions which are here gratefully acknowledged, with sincere appreciation of the many kind expressions accompanying them, concerning the usefulness of the Anatomy as heretofore printed. This edition is offered with the hope that it will merit a continuation of the favor accorded to its predecessor.
