Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Physiology This book has been written at the solicitation of students who have attended my lectures for the past eight years. The aim has not been to write a treatise on the subject, but rather an elementary work containing the chief facts of physiology which are necessary to the student who wishes to apply them in the practice of his profession. Physiology is the basis of medicine, and its understanding is requisite to the study of pathology. With this idea in mind, small space has been given to the subject of electro-physiology. The technique of the laboratory has been omitted for similar reasons. In the preparation of this book it was found impossible to give due credit to all the sources from which information has been derived. The illustrations have been selected from various authorities, to whom credit has been given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104book of Physiology The book has been written with the primary object of giving to the student in an easily understandable form the fundamental facts and theories of physiology, bearing in mind the limitations necessary in a student's textbook. We have followed the example of Michael Foster, and have avoided burdening the students memory with the names of authorities. When ready to leave the narrow scope of a textbook for the wide realms of independent thought, those who wish to extend their physiological knowledge can easily find their way into the literature of research by means of the various archives and journals of physiology. Alt-hough written primarily to meet the requirements of the medical student it is hoped that. In view of the ever-increasing importance of the proper application of physiology to general medi cine, the work may also prove oi value to the general practitioner. For the use of illustrations we are indebted to Dr. J. Barcroft, Professor W. M. Bayliss, Professor W. B. Cannon. Download or read book A Text Book of Human Physiology Classic Reprint written by Robert Tigerstedt and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Human Physiology To set fixed limits to the subject matter of physiology is a very difficult task, because, properly conceived, large portions of the entire group of medical and biological sciences belong to its province. A text-book designed primarily for medical students can, however, regard the field as somewhat more restricted; for the prospective physician has abundant opportunity to amplify his knowledge of the bodily functions from his other studies. Hence in this book I have followed the usual custom and have brought together only so much of our information respecting the human body as can be described as pertaining to its normal functions. The discoveries made in the realms of practical medicine, of experimental pathology and of pharmacology, which in many respects are so full of significance for the processes of the body, are, therefore, for the most part passed by. In like manner the facts of comparative physiology have been alluded to only in exceptional cases, since an exhaustive discussion of them would have increased the size of the book to a not inconsiderable extent. For the same reason I have been unable to find a place for the short histological discussion customary in text-books. I do not regard this as an error, for a necessarily brief and superficial resume of the most important histological facts could be of no great service, since the student needs a more extensive knowledge of the finer structure of the body and must in any case obtain this from the text-books devoted especially to that subject. I do not therefore at all mistake the great importance of histology for physiology; on the contrary, I would recommend that in the, study of a text-book of this science a text-book of histology (and one of anatomy) be always at hand in order to combine the physiological facts with the histological and anatomical facts. Physiological chemistry also has developed so far that more and more it can claim the right to be regarded as an independent science. On the other hand it is not possible to present the physiological facts without reference to the chemical processes of the body. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology and Health The new facts that have been established in connection with foods have changed many features of that important subject. Even the relation of bones and muscles presents a new emphasis to be placed upon certain topics, especially such as relate to properly shaped feet and the results of muscle degeneration. The recognition of neurons as the units of the nervous system and nervous action, and the con ception of the brain and spinal cord as a complex of inter related neurons, have vastly illuminated the study of the nervous system even for younger children. Download or read book An American Text Book on Physiology Classic Reprint written by Henry Pickering Bowditch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-16 with total page 1084 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American Text-Book on Physiology The collaboration of several teachers in the preparation of an elementary text-book of physiology is unusual, the almost invariable rule heretofore having been for a single author to write the entire book. It does not seem desirable to attempt a discussion of the relative merits and demerits of the two plans, since the method of collaboration is untried in the teaching of physi ology, and there is therefore no basis for a satisfactory comparison. It is a fact, however, that many teachers of physiology in this country have not been altogether satisfied with the text-books at their disposal. Some of the more successful older books have not kept pace with the rapid changes in modern physiology, while few, if any, of the newer books have been uniformly satis factory in their treatment of all parts of this many-sided science. Indeed, the literature of experimental physiology is so great that it would seem to be almost impossible for any one teacher to keep thoroughly informed on all topics. This fact undoubtedly accounts for some of the defects of our present text-books, and it is hoped that one of the advantages derived from the col laboration method is that, owing to the less voluminous literature to be consulted, each author has been enabled to base his elementary account upon a comprehensive knowledge of the part of the subject assigned to him. Those who are acquainted with the difficulty of making a satisfactory elementary presentation of the complex-and oftentimes unsettled questions of physiology must agree that authoritative statements and generalizations, such as are fre quently necessary in text-books if they are to leave any impression at all upon the student, are usually trustworthy in proportion to the fulness of informa tion possessed by the writer. Book Human Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Human Physiology Classic Reprint written by William Furneaux and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology This work is intended for those who desire an easy introduction to die study of the Human Frame. The matter embraces those parts of the subject which arc contained in the Elementary Syllabus of the Science and Art Department, but is not confined strictly within those limits. A short chapter on the Ear has been added (thus completing the outline of the organs of special sense), and also another on the Larynx and the Voice. And again, although the students working according to this Syllabus are not required to obtain any 'information upon points of structure needing the use of the compound microscope' with the exception of the characters of the corpuscles of the blood, yet in many other instances such information has been given. It is eminently desirable that the student should avail himself of every opportunity of making his study thoroughly practical. The author therefore has given, here and there, many hints as to how he should proceed in easy dissections; and has introduced a number of simple experiments, so that the knowledge gained may be of a sound character. It is too often felt that such practical and experimental methods of acquiring information are roundabout and tedious; but the author's experience has taught him to affirm that it is the readiest, surest, and certainly the most pleasant way of attaining the end in view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy and Physiology: A Text-Book for Nurses The human body from birth to Old age exhibits in the living condition a series of phenomena by which it grows, performs the various and complex movements of which man is capable in the processes of daily life; thinks, and is conscious of the sensations which bring him into relation with his surroundings, and repro duces, permitting a continuation of the species. A study of the functions of the numerous organs and structures of the body in a state of health, and their associated phenomena of growth, movement, mentality, and reproduction, is termed human physiology. To understand the functions of organs, etc., it is necessary to first understand the construction of the human body of which they are a part. To this branch Of science the term human anatomy is applied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
