Book Forest Entomology and Pathology

Download or read book Forest Entomology and Pathology written by Jeremy D. Allison and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book will provide an introduction to forest entomology, the principles and techniques of forest insect pest management, the different forest insect guilds/feeding groups, and relevant forest insect pest management case studies. In addition to covering 30% of the earth, forest ecosystems provide numerous timber and non-timber products that affect our daily lives and recreational opportunities, habitat for diverse animal communities, watershed protection, play critical roles in the water cycle, and mitigate soil erosion and global warming. In addition to being the most abundant organisms in forest ecosystems, insects perform numerous functions in forests, many of which are beneficial and critical to forest health. Conversely, some insects damage and/or kill trees and reduce the capacity of forests to provide desired ecosystem services. The target audience of this book is upper-level undergraduate and graduate students and professionals interested in forest health and entomology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects are the most abundant and diverse organisms that inhabit our planet and are found in all the world’s forest ecosystems. Many feed and/or breed on parts of trees. Some perform important functions, such as pollination or break-down of dead vegetation. Others weaken, deform or kill trees, and compete with humans for the many goods and services that trees and forests provide. Forest Entomology: A Global Perspective examines forest insects in a global context and reviews their dynamics, interactions with humans and methods for monitoring and management of species that damage forests. Also provided are 235 profiles of forest insects, worldwide. A series of tables provides summaries of the distribution and hosts of many more species. Included are those that damage forests, others that are simply curiosities and some that are beneficial. This book is designed as a reference for students, practicing foresters and forest health specialists, especially for those who work internationally or are concerned with species that have the potential to expand their ranges via international trade, travel or environmental changes.

Download or read book Forest entomology in West Tropical Africa Forest insects of Ghana written by Michael R. Wagner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a great honor and indeed a privilege for me to write the Foreword to this book, the first of its kind from the Forest Products Research Institute The study of forest insects is now becoming a matter of great concern to many people all over the world because insects damage the already depleted forests and forest resources. In Ghana very little interest was shown in the insects of forest trees and products. But as forest practices have become more intensive so also have the pests on the crops increased and the damage caused increased to alarming proportions. Foresters are now becoming in creasingly aware of the immense havoc that some of these insects can cause. To aid the fight against the pests they have to be fully identified and studied so that effective control measures can be implemented. It is in an effort to bridge this gap in our knowledge that one welcomes this book by Professor Michael R. Wagner, Dr. S.K.N. Atuahene and Dr.

Book A History of Forest Entomology in the Intermountain and Rocky Mountain Areas 1901 1982

Download or read book A History of Forest Entomology in the Intermountain and Rocky Mountain Areas 1901 1982 written by Malcolm M. Furniss and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This account spans the time from A.D. Hopkins' trip to the Black Hills, SD, in 1901 to my retirement in 1982. The focus is on personnel and the work of the Division of Forest Insect Investigations, USDA, and the Forest Service experiment stations in the Rocky Mountain and Intermountain areas. Information for the Intermountain and Northern Rocky Mountain station areas is derived from my experience there and as chairman of the history committee of the Western Forest Insect Work Conference (WFIWC). Information on the Rocky Mountain and Southwestern station areas came primarily from the WFIWC archives, University of Idaho, and from retired forest entomologists.

Book Forest Entomology Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Entomology As author of a work on a subject which does not appeal to a very wide circle of readers, I realise that it is a very high compliment that a second edition has been called for in a comparatively short time. Hence there is no need for drastic changes. I have, however, tried to benefit by the kindly advice given by entomological friends and others interested in the subject; therefore the chapters have been re-arranged more in accordance with the sequence of entomological classification. I have tried also, as far as I possibly can, to correct the recognition of photos and drawings of several friends. In this respect the first edition showed a slight error in acknowledging special photos as emanating from a friend rather than the firm of which he was a partner, and to whom I am very grateful for assistance. I am specially indebted to Professor Carpenter, of the Royal College of Science, Dublin, for correcting several points in the Introductory chapter.
