Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fleming's Veterinary Obstetrics: Including the Diseases and Accidents Incidental to Pregnancy Parturition In the preparation of a new edition of Fleming's "Veterinary Obstetrics," the aim of the editor has been to modify and condense it so that it may prove a convenient text-book for the student of veterinary obstetrics. For that purpose many details have been omitted, which, although valuable in themselves, could be removed without seriously interfering with the usefulness of the work. The original plan of the book is in the main preserved, but diseases of the mammary glands and of the young animals are not included in this edition. The work has been almost entirely rewritten, and the information brought up to date. The literature consulted includes various works on veterinary obstetrics published by De Bruin, Bournay and Williams, Smith's "Veterinary Physiology," Marshall's "Vertebrate Embryology," Ewart's "A Critical Period in the Development of the Horse," the Reports of the Departmental Committee on Contagious Abortion, and numerous articles in the veterinary periodicals. The work deals essentially with the diseases incidental to conception and pregnancy, the nature and the treatment of the various forms of dystokia, and the sequels to parturition. A description is also given of the anatomy of the female genital organs and the normal processes connected with reproduction.
