This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of the History of Painting The object of this series of text-books is to provide concise teachable histories of art for class-room use in schools and colleges. The limited time given to the study of art in the average educational institution has not only dictated the condensed style of the volumes, but has lim ited their scope of matter to the general features of art history. Archaeological discussions on special subjects and aesthetic theories have been avoided. The main facts of history as settled by the best authorities are given. If the reader choose to enter into particulars the bibliography cited at the head of each chapter will be found helpful. Illustrations have been introduced as sight-help to the text, and, to avoid repetition, abbreviations have been used wherever practicable. The enumeration of the principal extant works of an artist, school, or period, and where they may be found, which follows each chapter, may be service able not only as a summary of individual or school achieve ment, but for reference by travelling students in Europe. The origin of painting is unknown. The first important records of this art are met with in Egypt; but before the Egyptian civilization the men of the early ages probably used color in ornamentation and decoration, and they certainly scratched the outlines of men and animals upon bone and slate. Traces of this rude primitive work still remain to us on the pottery, weapons, and stone implements of the cave-dwellers. But while indicating the awakening of intelligence in early man, they can be reckoned with as art only in a slight archæological way. They show inclination rather than accomplishment-a wish to ornament or to represent, with only a crude knowledge of how to go about it. The first aim of this primitive painting was undoubtedly decoration-the using of colored forms for color and form only, as shown in the pottery designs or cross-hatchings on stone knives or spear-heads. The second, and perhaps later aim, was by imitating the shapes and colors of men, animals, and the like, to convey an idea of the proportions and characters of such things. An outline of a cave-bear or a mammoth was perhaps the cave-dweller's way of telling his fellows what monsters he had slain. We may assume that it was pictorial record, primitive picture-written history. This early method of conveying an idea is, in intent, substantially the same as the later hieroglyphic writing and historical painting of the Egyptians. The difference between them is merely one of development. Thus there is an indication in the art of Primitive Man of the two great departments of painting existent to-day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art in Painting In this book an effort is made to trace in the history Of painting the essential continuity Of the great traditions and to Show that the best Of the modern painters use the same means, to the same general ends, as did the great Florentines, Venetians, Dutchmen and Spaniards. TO Show that continuity, it has been necessary to analyze the plastic forms of the principal painters from the dawn Of the Italian Renaissance down to the present day. His torical data are treated as merely incidental: no attempt has been made to present a complete summary Of the history of painting, although no important movement and no really first-class artist has been entirely left out of account in the general evaluations. Download or read book Text Books of Art Education Classic Reprint written by Hugo D. Froehlich and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104 Books of Art Education In presenting to the public the series of d104 Books of Art Education, of which this volume is a part, it is desired to state briefly the aims and purposes of the plan upon which the series is based. It is not necessary to review the history of art education in public schools, nor to present argument for the introduction or retention of drawing as an important study. These questions have been exhaustively treated, and need no fresh discussion. The school that does not offer to its community some kind of systematic art instruction is today an exception. Education along specific lines should conform to the philosophy which is accepted as fundamental in general educational work. The educational principles adhered to in these books are, therefore, in accord with the psychological laws of child development which are endorsed by the leading educators of the present time, and the effort has been made to work out in these books a series of lessons that shall be not only educationally sound and artistically correct, but at the same time adapted in the different stages to the child's ability to comprehend and his power to express. With this end in view, the lessons in the d104 Books of Art Education have been divided into three groups which may be known as the Observational or Objective Group, in which the study of things is the aim; the Subjective Group, in which the study of principles or laws of beauty is the aim; and the Creative Group, in which the application of accumulated knowledge and ability is the aim. In furthering the work of the first group, the topics so familiar to the art teacher of our modern schools are treated - landscape, plants, life, and still life. In the second group are presented the principles of perspective, of industrial drawing, of color harmony, and most important of all, the principles of pure design. In the third group are placed creative exercises in composition, in decorative design, and in many forms of manual training. While the same division of work is kept throughout the course, the manner of presentation differs greatly in the different years. In the primary grades, the work is largely objective in its character. Children are taught to see and to do. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Elementary History of Art: Architecture, Sculpture, Painting by N. D'Anvers was originally created for the sole purpose of expanding the fine art education of the people of America and England. Faced with her personal experience of standing by while "great ignorance prevailed amongst the general public as to the technical and intellectual history of Architecture, Sculpture, and Painting," D'Anvers became resolute in her determination to advance cultural literacy. This perceived flaw in fine art education compelled her to create a book intended to expand on the subject of art and illuminate her readers' minds. The popularity of D'Anvers book is obvious not only in the multitude of people familiar with it but also with the number of reprints/editions the general public have requested over time. A wonderful resource for anyone interested in art and art history, this book presents a well-spring of information to enlighten even a novice art enthusiast. The book contains articles for a wide variety of subjects and presents a glossary of terms early into the text to prepare readers for terminology they will come across in the text. The book also hosts a wonderful array of illustrations to help further the reader's understanding of art and increase their cultural literacy. An Elementary History of Art: Architecture, Sculpture, Painting eagerly encompasses N. D'Anvers goal of educating the public on all things art. D'Anvers single-handedly achieved her goal to emphasize the importance of art in culture with this publication, a feat not easily obtained but one that has helped to promote the education and preservation of art. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bernini and Other Studies in the History of Art The essays presented in the following pages are the prod uct of no hasty thought. I am grateful to the kind friends who have encouraged their publication, and to the publishers for giving them so attractive a form. The choice Of illustrations has been difficult. It has seemed best, however, to reproduce in full the little-known sketches of Bernini showing the development, in his mind, of the design for the Piazza of St. Peter's, and the sculptor's models wrought by his own hands. For the rest I have thought that it would be more serviceable for the reader to have a few typical examples illustrating the main points of the text rather than a larger, and perhaps more confusing, selection of subjects from the almost inexhaustible wealth of available material. I am under deep obligation for the gen erous permission to include among the illustrations material in the Brandegee Collection (at Faulkner Farm, Brookline, Massachusetts) hitherto unpublished. The heliotype plates were prepared and printed under the direction of Mr. William C. Ramsay, of Boston. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alberti’s Della Pittura was the first modern analytical study of painting, a pioneering treatise on the theory of art. A systematic description of the one-point perspective construction, it was primarily designed to persuade both patron and painter in the Renaissance to discard the old tastes in painting for the new. John R. Spencer's translation of Della Pittura is based on all the known manuscripts and is edited with an Introduction and Notes.
