In these cases, the eyes become of unequal power; so that one only can be employed where distinct vision is required. Download or read book A Text Book of Physiology Vol 1 of 2 written by John Gray M'Kendrick and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104 Book of Physiology, Vol. 1 of 2: General Physiology Although this work has been modelled to some extent on my "Outlines of Physiology," now out of print, it is essentially a new book, and as it aims at giving a more detailed account of the subject, the title of "Outlines of Physiology" has been abandoned for that of a "d104 Book of Physiology." I have not endeavoured to give anything like an encyclopaedic account of the modern researches that have built up the physiological science of the present time, but rather to weave into a consecutive narrative the main facts and principles of physiology, as these present themselves to my mind, after nearly eighteen years of experience as a teacher of the science. Probably no science is advancing with greater rapidity, if one may form an opinion from the large number of original papers that are announced, month by month, and from the large number of investigators in the physiological laboratories of the Continent, of America, and of our own country. Thus it is year by year becoming more difficult for a teacher to keep abreast of the wave of progress, and still more difficult to assimilate the new facts and to incorporate them with his previous knowledge. Each teacher will also view the subject more especially according to his prodilections for the morphological, the chemical, or the physical side of the science, and it is not easy in the preparation of such a work as this to be impartial and to present the science in all its completeness to the reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary System of Physiology, Vol. 2 The reception, which the first volume of this trea tise experienced, could leave no doubt in my mind as to the necessity of completing the work; and I lament that certain circumstances, which were unavoidable, have delayed for so long a period the publication of the second part. As, however, the circumstances to Which I allude no longer exist, I may indulge a hope that the third volume will succeed the present at a considerably shorter interval. 1 have, as nearly as pos sible, pursued the same method of giving an account of the best established facts, and the most approved by potheses; freely offering my remarks upon them, and pointing out any part which appeared to be objection able. I have, however, found it a very difficult task to arrive at any satisfactory conclusion, with respect to many of the topics that are discussed in this volume. For, singular as it may appear, although most of them profess to be established on the basis of direct experi ments, and such as would appear not to be of very dif ficult execution, yet we shall find that every step of the track through which I have had to pass, is on debate able ground. On this account, I have frequently felt it necessary to dissent from the Opinions of the most eminent physiologists of the age but when I have done this, i have given my reason for the dissent; and. Download or read book A Text Book of Physiology Classic Reprint written by Isaac Ott and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Physiology This book has been written at the solicitation of students who have attended my lectures for the past eight years. The aim has not been to write a treatise on the subject, but rather an elementary work containing the chief facts of physiology which are necessary to the student who wishes to apply them in the practice of his profession. Physiology is the basis of medicine, and its understanding is requisite to the study of pathology. With this idea in mind, small space has been given to the subject of electro-physiology. The technique of the laboratory has been omitted for similar reasons. In the preparation of this book it was found impossible to give due credit to all the sources from which information has been derived. The illustrations have been selected from various authorities, to whom credit has been given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A Textbook of Physiology Classic Reprint written by Martin Flack and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104book of Physiology The book has been written with the primary object of giving to the student in an easily understandable form the fundamental facts and theories of physiology, bearing in mind the limitations necessary in a student's textbook. We have followed the example of Michael Foster, and have avoided burdening the students memory with the names of authorities. When ready to leave the narrow scope of a textbook for the wide realms of independent thought, those who wish to extend their physiological knowledge can easily find their way into the literature of research by means of the various archives and journals of physiology. Alt-hough written primarily to meet the requirements of the medical student it is hoped that. In view of the ever-increasing importance of the proper application of physiology to general medi cine, the work may also prove oi value to the general practitioner. For the use of illustrations we are indebted to Dr. J. Barcroft, Professor W. M. Bayliss, Professor W. B. Cannon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiological Anatomy and Physiology of Man, Vol. 2 of 2 The work, Which is now brought to a conclusion, was commenced in the year 1843, having been designed as a text-book for the lectures on General Anatomy and Physiology, given in King's College, London. In its title, we adopted the term Physiological Anatomy; in preference to the older one of General, or the later one of Histological, as being more comprehensive than either, and as denoting precisely that kind of anatomy, a know ledge of Which is especially required for the investigation of those subjects Which ought to come under consideration in a Physiological course. Download or read book A Text Book of Physiology Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by M. Foster and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text Book of Physiology, Vol. 1 In the present edition I have made considerable changes and additions; but in the changes I have tried to maintain the character of the book as presented in previous editions; and the additions, with the exception of the histological paragraphs, are caused not by any attempt to add new matter or to enlarge the general scope of the work, but by an effort to explain more fully and at greater length what seem to me to be the most fundamental and most important topics. I have been led to introduce some histological statements, not with the view of in any way relieving the student from the necessity of studying distinct histological treatises, but in order to bring him to the physiological problem with the histological data fresh in his mind. I have therefore dealt very briefly with the several histological points and confined myself to matters having a physiological bearing. My friends Dr Gaskell, Mr Langley and Dr Lea have given me great assistance throughout, and their names might fitly appear on the title page, were it not that the present arrangement makes me alone responsible for all shortcomings. I have also to thank my senior demonstrator Mr L. E. Shore, M.B. and my junior demonstrator Mr Wingfield, M.A. for much valuable aid. The second and third parts will follow this first part as soon as possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Even the relation of bones and muscles presents a new emphasis to be placed upon certain topics, especially such as relate to properly shaped feet and the results of muscle degeneration. The recognition of neurons as the units of the nervous system and nervous action, and the con ception of the brain and spinal cord as a complex of inter related neurons, have vastly illuminated the study of the nervous system even for younger children.
