This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Botany, for Secondary Schools 1. Occurrence of plants - Plants form the natural cover ing of the earth's surface. So generally is this true that a land surface without plants seems remarkable. Not only do plants cover the land, but they abound in waters as well, both fresh and salt waters. One of the most noticeable facts in regard to the occurrence of plants is that they do not form a monotonous covering for the earth's surface, but that there are forests in one place, meadows in another, swamp growths in another, etc. In this way the general appearance of vegetation is exceedingly varied, and each appearance tells of certain conditions of living. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Botany: An Introductory Text for Colleges and Advanced Classes in Secondary Schools The first step in developing the course was the arranging Of laboratory and field work. The second was the working out Of the classroom discussions SO that the class work and the actual work with the plant materials would run parallel and supple ment each other. The laboratory directions have been used and revised at intervals during the past five years, and the textbook has been tested and revised and used in mimeographed form for the past two years. During this period the work has been pre sented to upward Of three thousand students and the course has been improved in every detail through the experience and con structive criticisms Of the eight instructors who have tried out various methods and devices and different arrangements Of the material with their classes at The Ohio State University. Suggestions and ideas for guidance in the selection Of subject matter have been derived from four sources. The first of these is the traditional course in general botany. This embodies the facts and principles which most botanists agree are essential for a foundation in the subject, and these are to be retained unless there is definite reason why they Should be set aside. The second source from which suggestions as to subject matter have come is the large body Of men engaged in the teaching or practice Of horticulture, agriculture, and forestry. These workers in the applied fields Of botany are the men who more than any others use information concerning plants, and certainly a course in general botany Should afford a foundation for their courses and their practice. A third source Of suggestions and criticism is the students to whom the course has been given. The questions they have asked. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Students' Text-Book of Botany When, some few years ago, it became necessary to revise the English Edition of the late Prof. Prantl's Lehrbuch der Botanik, it appeared to me that the requirements of English students would be more satisfactorily met if the scope of the work were so extended that, whilst retaining all that has made it of value to beginners, it might be more useful to those engaged in the advanced study of the science. With this object in view, the number of pages has been doubled by additions to all four parts of the book, but more especially to Part III. Dealing with the Classification of Plants. Download or read book A Text Book of Botany for Secondary Schools written by John M. Coulter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Botany, for Secondary Schools The several editions of Plant Studies, designed for use in secondary schools, were combined abridgments of Plant Relations and Plant Structures. Although this arrangement involved a certain amount of repetition and lack of continuity, it was felt that these faults would be corrected by the competent teacher, whose chief desire would be to secure points of view in reference to botanical material. During the five years that have elapsed since the publication of the first edition of Plant Studies, the opinions of many experienced teachers have been obtained. These opinions have been based upon repeated use of the book, and have been of the greatest possible service in developing definite ideas as to the adjustment of the subject to the needs of the schools. The natural outgrowth of this cooperation between author and teachers has been the preparation of the present Text-Book of Botany, which seeks to express their combined judgment. There has been substantial agreement as to the nature of the material and the points of view, the only differences of opinion being such minor ones of presentation as must always be found among equally competent teachers. Download or read book A Textbook of Botany for Colleges and Universities Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by John Merle Coulter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104book of Botany for Colleges and Universities, Vol. 1 We recognize that the presentation of the three great subjects here included is very compact, but the book is not intended for reading and recitation. The teacher is expected to use it for suggestive material and for its organization; the student is expected to use it in relating his observations to one another and to the general points of view that the book seeks to develop. There is a continuity of presentation in each part, so that random selection may miss the largest meaning. For example, in the part on morphology, the thread upon which the facts are strung is the evolution of the plant kingdom, and each plant introduced has its peculiar application in illustrating some phase of this evolution. When certain groups are selected for laboratory study, therefore, the intervening text should be read. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of High School Botany The present work is intended solely as a laboratory guide in connection with lectures or a text-book. The matter has, in consequence, been presented in the briefest and most compact form consistent with this purpose. The aim is to put the student to work quickly and to keep him at work intelligently. Ex planation has been added only when it seemed essen tial to the proper handling of the laboratory work. The material and the teacher have been regarded as the two important facts in the work. The laboratory directions, it is hoped, will bring the student into direct contact with the material, and will relieve the teacher of a large amount of drudgery, thus giving him time for real teaching. Book Elements of Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of Botany Classic Reprint written by Joseph Y. Bergen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Botany It will be found that this book differs from most American text-books designed for use in secondary schools, in endeavor ing to combine in one volume the simplest possible directions for laboratory work with an outline of vegetable anatomy and physiology, and a brief statement of the principles of botani cal classification. An account of the functions of the tissues or organs described usually follows as closely as may be the account of the parts in question. The attempt is made to disciiss' plants dynamically rather than statically, to view them as contestants in the struggle for existence, and to con sider some of the conditions of success and failure in the vegetable world. While the determination of species by means of an artifical key is illustrated, preparation for this process is by no means the main object or even a principal end which the author has had in view. The tendency of botany-teaching seems to be more and more away from the old ideal of enabling one's pupils to run down a species as expeditiously as possible, and teaching them how to preserve a properly ticketed memento of the chase. In a word, the student should not attempt to read the book straight through from the beginning as if it were a novel. On the contrary, he may begin With any one of the four parts as his main subject but that part must be studied in close relation with the other three parts, a procedure Which is facilitated by the large number of cross-references in the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Botany for High Schools and Colleges This book is designed to serve as an Introduction to the Study of Plants. It does not profess to give a, complete account of the Vegetable Kingdom, but only such an outline as will best subserve the pur poses of the work. In its preparation there have been kept in view the wants of the large number, in the schools and out, who wish to obtain, as a branch of a liberal cul ture, a general knowledge of the structure of plants, with some idea as to their classification into the larger divisions and subdivisions of the Vegetable Kingdom. For this class of students and general readers, what is here given will in most cases be amply sufficient to enable any one to understand the greater part of the current biological literature, in so far as it relates to vegetable organisms. For the student who desires to pursue the subject further, or who intends to make botany a special study, this book aims to lead him to become himself an observer and investigator, and thus to obtain at first hand his knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of plants accordingly the presentation of the matter has been made such as to fit the book for constant use in the Laboratory, the text supplying the outline sketch, which may be filled up by each.
