One may become interested in the life Of field and stream as a hunter and fisherman, or as an amateur naturalist through the collection Of specimens. The farmer's son who watches the insects that devour the crops and who protects insect-eating birds may become something of a zoologist unawares. The boy or girl who studies Anatomy and Physiology in school becomes famil iar with structure and function as found in the bodies of higher animals. A high-school course in Zoology or in Biology Offers a more comprehensive introduction. Whatever may have been the student's previous experience with zoological science, it is desirable that he make the most Of it throughout the study outlined in the present volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zoology: A Textbook for College and University Students After using much of the subject matter as a mimeographed text, the author prepared the manuscript in its final form, and during three summers has availed himself of the aid of many specialists at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Mass. Through the interest of various authorities who gave advance information about their work, certain chapters include material prior to the actual publication of the research discussed. Some of the most important features of the book are the logical arrangement of facts about the animals within a group, a statement of the chief characteristics at the beginning of the discussion, and a summary on the economic importance at the end of each section. The newer physiology has been introduced and a bibliography checked by experts in each field is given at the end of each chapter. Sources readily available have been selected and resumes chosen instead of the pioneer researches. Extensive discussions of Embry ology and Animal Behavior have been found undesirable since such studies cannot be comprehensively treated in an introductory course without excluding other fundamental subjects. Book College Zoology Classic Reprint

Download or read book College Zoology Classic Reprint written by Robert W. Hegner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Zoology This book is intended to serve as a text for beginning students in universities and colleges, or for students who have already taken a course in general biology and wish to gain a more com prehensive View of the animal kingdom. It differs from many of the college textbooks of zoology now on the market in several important respects: (1) the animals and their organs are not only described, but their functions are pointed out; (2) the ani mals described are in most cases native species; and (3) the relations of the animals to man are emphasized. Besides serv ing as a textbook, it is believed that this book will be of interest to the general reader, since it gives a bird's-eye View of the entire animal kingdom as we know it at the present time. Within the past decade there has been a tendency for teachers of zoology to pay less attention to morphology and more to physiology. As a prominent morphologist recently said. Book Outlines of Economic Zo logy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of Economic Zo logy Classic Reprint written by Albert Moore Reese and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Economic Zoology The book may be used in several ways. As followed by the author, the course may be given as a separate one to students who have already had the regular elementary course in general zoology. In this case the students will be familiar with the classification, structure and habits of most of the type forms discussed, but, if desired, additional labo ratory work may be arranged for the study of certain parasitic and other economically important forms not generally considered in a general laboratory course. Or, the text might be used in a beginning course in zoology by some amplification of the morphologic and other aspects and considerable increase in laboratory work. Again, it could well be used as supplementary reading with, say, one hour credit per semester for the year, in connection with the regular elementary course in general zoology. It is thought that, used in one or other of these ways or in some still different way, it should be especially useful to students in agriculture, who want a practical course. Various sources of information have been drawn upon, and recognized authorities in each subject consulted so far as possible. The publications of the Government, especially those of the Department of Agriculture, have been freely used and quoted. The figures have been borrowed largely, either from technical or from more popular works, whichever gave the best ideas of the animals portrayed; the source is indicated in every case. The brief bibliography at the end of the book is merely to aid the student, who may have become especially interested in some animal or group, to get more detailed information. Download or read book Text Book of Zoology Classic Reprint written by J. E. V. Boas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text Book of Zoology AN English translation of Dr. Boas's Lehrbuch der Zoologie, which has already appeared in two Danish and two German editions, has been arranged in the hope that it may prove useful to yet a larger public. The translation is designed, in the first place, to assist beginners in the study of Zoology but the needs of students of Medicine, of Veterinary Surgery, and of Forestry have also been kept in View. It will be noticed that Dr. Boas gives prominence to facts rather than to theories, and of these, such as should be of use to one or other of the classes of readers just enumerated, or as should be most convenient for verification.
