Book Technologies and Approaches to Reducing the Fuel Consumption of Medium and Heavy Duty Vehicles

Download or read book Technologies and Approaches to Reducing the Fuel Consumption of Medium and Heavy Duty Vehicles written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-07-30 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technologies and Approaches to Reducing the Fuel Consumption of Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles evaluates various technologies and methods that could improve the fuel economy of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, such as tractor-trailers, transit buses, and work trucks. The book also recommends approaches that federal agencies could use to regulate these vehicles' fuel consumption. Currently there are no fuel consumption standards for such vehicles, which account for about 26 percent of the transportation fuel used in the U.S. The miles-per-gallon measure used to regulate the fuel economy of passenger cars. is not appropriate for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, which are designed above all to carry loads efficiently. Instead, any regulation of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles should use a metric that reflects the efficiency with which a vehicle moves goods or passengers, such as gallons per ton-mile, a unit that reflects the amount of fuel a vehicle would use to carry a ton of goods one mile. This is called load-specific fuel consumption (LSFC). The book estimates the improvements that various technologies could achieve over the next decade in seven vehicle types. For example, using advanced diesel engines in tractor-trailers could lower their fuel consumption by up to 20 percent by 2020, and improved aerodynamics could yield an 11 percent reduction. Hybrid powertrains could lower the fuel consumption of vehicles that stop frequently, such as garbage trucks and transit buses, by as much 35 percent in the same time frame.

Book Interlaboratory Correlation of Chassis Dynamometer Test Results

Download or read book Interlaboratory Correlation of Chassis Dynamometer Test Results written by R. R. M. Johnston and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The testing of passenger car fuel consumption and exhaust emissions is carried out on chassis dynamometers of various makes and specifications. Correlation of results from difference installations may be carried out at regular intervals using a specially prepared vehicle containing a stable engine (for exhaust emissions), torque transducers, a fuel flow meter and an electronic data acquisition system. However, basic problems, such as establishing a consistent relationship between wheel speed of the test vehicle and the surface speed of the idler roller have received little attention. The present paper discusses these and other problems encountered in an interlaboratory correlation round involving more than 100 drive cycle tests in nine different chassis dynamometer laboratories throughout Australia. A method is presented of setting the tyre rolling circumference of the instrumented test car, which largely eliminates the wheel speed anomaly. In addition, a data analysis procedure, which separates absorbed power into components of friction, drag and inertia, has been used for diagnosing dynamometer and fuel consumption differences.

Book Dyno Testing and Tuning

Download or read book Dyno Testing and Tuning written by Harold Bettes and published by CarTech Inc. This book was released on 2008 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The photos in this edition are black and white. Dyno Testing and Tuning is the first book to explain the proper testing procedures that everyone should use to get accurate and useful results from either an engine or chassis dyno. Authors Harold Bettes and Bill Hancock, recognized experts in the performance and racing industry, apply their wealth of knowledge and experience to deliver the definitive work on dynamometers and dyno testing. This book will be useful to anyone who wants to squeeze more power out of their car or engine, but should also be required reading for performance shop owners and dyno operators. The book explains how a dyno works, describes what kinds of data a dyno test can produce, and then shows you how to plan a test session that will give you the results you're looking for. You'll learn what to look for in a dyno facility, how to conduct a dyno test and ensure the accuracy and repeatability of your test, and how to troubleshoot any problems that arise. Sample forms and checklists round out what is sure to be an indispensable book for anyone who wants to make the most of their dyno testing.

Book Test Plan for Reliability Fleet Testing of Alcohol gasoline Blends

Download or read book Test Plan for Reliability Fleet Testing of Alcohol gasoline Blends written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alternative Fuels Utilization Program (AFUP) addresses several options as petroleum replacements for highway vehicles. At this time, the AFUP effort is concentrating on alcohol fuels with the goal of bringing the end-use technology for alcohol/gasoline blends to the point of commercial readiness by 1982-83. This Test Plan covers the operational and reporting procedures associated with the fleet vehicles and supporting facilities, the latter encompassing both the garage/fueling complex and the emissions/fuel economy test facility. The operational instructions and requirements provide for pretest and daily fleet activities; vehicle maintenance and replacement; fuel surveillance; and dynamometer testing for emissions and fuel economy on a chassis dynamometer.

Book Dynamometer

Download or read book Dynamometer written by Jyotindra S. Killedar and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It all began way back in 1984 when I began my career in the field of dynamometer and engine testing when after years of gut-feeling and study I realized that there is a need for a book on dynamometer and its application to engine testing. As automotive and dynamometer industry is growing worldwide the concern eventually became so great I felt a book devoted to the subject was warranted. The book Dynamometer-Theory and Application to Engine Testing is a book dedicated to various dynamometers and how they are applied to engine testing. The book also discusses the essentials of modern test cell and the instrumentation, data acquisition system and other accessories that are employed in modern test cell. After having worked in the filed of industrial compressors, pumps, material handling equipment, dynamometer field and software industry I decided to write this book which will help the people working in the automotive industry, engine and vehicle testing, people working in the dynamometer and instrumentation industry and electrical motor industry. The book will be of interest to the studenrs of mechanical and automobile engineering. The book will be of great value to the incumbents entering in the automotive and dynamometer fields.
