Book excerpt: Previous research has shown that alcohol use is a public health concern among undergraduate college students, which has been shown to be related to physical and mental health outcomes (Britton, 2004; Corbin, Farmer, & Nolen-Hoekesma, 2013; DeBord, 1998; Dowdall & Wechsler, 2002; Eisenberg & Wechsler, 2003; Gottfredson & Hussong, 2013; Ham & Hope, 2003; Ham & Hope, 2005; Johnston, O’Malley, Bachman, Schulenberg, & Miech, 2015). Models of minority stress have indicated that individuals who identify as a sexual minority (lesbian, gay, bisexual) experience mental health disparities, particularly depression and alcohol use (Fergusson, Horwood, & Beautrais, 1999; Cochran & Mays, 2000; Gilman et al., 2000; Sandfort, Graaf, Bijl, & Schnabel, 2001; Cochran, Sullivan, & Mays, 2003). The purpose of the current study was to understand the unique patterns, trajectories, and possible predictive factors of alcohol use and related problems in sexual minority emerging adult women, related to sexual minority stress and social anxiety. Online surveys were utilized via Amazon Mechanical Turk (mTurk) to gather information regarding participants’ demographics, rates of alcohol use, alcohol related problems, social anxiety, and minority stress experience. Structural equation modeling was conducted to test a mediation model for multi-group comparisons (lesbian, bisexual, heterosexual). Results showed that bisexual women had higher rates of alcohol related problems and social anxiety, in comparison to lesbian and bisexual counterparts. Minority stress was differentially related to alcohol related problems and social anxiety when comparing lesbian and bisexual participants. However, social anxiety did not mediate the relationship between minority stress and alcohol related problems for either group of participants. Model fit for heterosexual participants is discussed further, related to applicability of the minority stress questionnaire for comparisons with this group.

Book excerpt: The Importance of Measuring Alcohol Consumption To date, alcohol studies have attended far more to issues of alco hol dependence and the harmful consequences of drinking than to the level of alcohol consumption itself. This is, perhaps, not surprising since dependence on alcohol is believed to constitute a meaningful and distinct medical syndrome, regardless of the level of alcohol consumption associated with it (Edwards and Gross, 1976). Also, of society is generally more concerned with the adverse consequences drinking (e. g. , traffic fatalities, homelessness, health care and legal expenses, and academiclbehavioral problems in young drinkers), than with the quantity of alcohol actually consumed. Nevertheless, accurate assessment of alcohol usage is important in its own right in at least four contexts: 1. Evaluating the effectiveness of alcoholism and alcohol abuse treatment and prevention efforts. Such efforts include both applied evaluations of existing programs and formal, well-controlled efficacy studies on experimental interventions. These investigations require rigorous methodologies to assess outcomes precisely and contrast what may be quite subtle differences between programs and between pre treatment and posttreatment outcomes. Although these studies are usually characterized by the employment of multiple measures of success-including general improvements in social and physical functioning, reduction in degree of dependence, and resolution of problems directly resultant from drinking-it is by their assessment of changes in drinking behavior that they are potentially able to achieve the highest level of objectivity and exactitude.
