Book A Terrible Efficiency

Download or read book A Terrible Efficiency written by Franklin G. Mixon, Jr. and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-24 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides numerous examples that apply the modern theory of bureaucracy developed in Breton and Wintrobe (1982 and 1986) to the Nazi Holocaust. More specifically, the book argues, as do Breton and Wintrobe (1986), that the subordinates in the Nazi bureaucracy were not “following orders” as they claimed during the war crimes trials at Nuremberg and elsewhere, but were instead exhibiting an entrepreneurial spirit in competing with one another in order to find the most efficient way of exacting the Final Solution. This involved engaging in a process of exchange with their superiors, wherein the subordinates offered the kinds of informal services that are not codified in formal contracts. In doing so, they were competing for the rewards, or informal payments not codified in formal contracts, that were conferred by those at the top of the bureaucracy. These came in the form of rapid promotion, perquisites (pecuniary and in-kind), and other awards. The types of exchanges described above are based on “trust,” not formal institutions.

Book The Efficiency Paradox

Download or read book The Efficiency Paradox written by Edward Tenner and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold challenge to our obsession with efficiency—and a new understanding of how to benefit from the powerful potential of serendipity. Algorithms, multitasking, the sharing economy, life hacks: our culture can't get enough of efficiency. One of the great promises of the Internet and big data revolutions is the idea that we can improve the processes and routines of our work and personal lives to get more done in less time than we ever have before. There is no doubt that we're performing at higher levels and moving at unprecedented speed, but what if we're headed in the wrong direction? Melding the long-term history of technology with the latest headlines and findings of computer science and social science, The Efficiency Paradox questions our ingrained assumptions about efficiency, persuasively showing how relying on the algorithms of digital platforms can in fact lead to wasted efforts, missed opportunities, and, above all, an inability to break out of established patterns. Edward Tenner offers a smarter way of thinking about efficiency, revealing what we and our institutions, when equipped with an astute combination of artificial intelligence and trained intuition, can learn from the random and unexpected.

"Using his Egg, Albert, the endangered son of a Same-Sex male couple from Ki, will be reborn on Earth. The year is 2025, after the fundamentalist White Christian Party has taken over a divided America. Traveling through a nation split among fundamentalist strongholds and "gay reserves," Albert will find the Earth mate who will claim his heart - and allow him to return to Ki and reclaim leadership of the planet. Mesmerizing, erotic, and truthful, Albert is the story of two men - and two worlds - finally merging in these amazing chronicles of The Book Of Man. There, as the gay Everyman at the crossroads of life, death, and identity, Albert will tell his own story and define the ultimate tribe from which he comes."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: With a variety of detection chemistries, an increasing number of platforms, multiple choices for analytical methods and the jargon emerging along with these developments, real-time PCR is facing the risk of becoming an intimidating method, especially for beginners. Real-time PCR provides the basics, explains how they are exploited to run a real-time PCR assay, how the assays are run and where these assays are informative in real life. It addresses the most practical aspects of the techniques with the emphasis on 'how to do it in the laboratory'. Keeping with the spirit of the Advanced Methods Series, most chapters provide an experimental protocol as an example of a specific assay.

Book PostgreSQL 10 High Performance

Download or read book PostgreSQL 10 High Performance written by Enrico Pirozzi and published by Packt Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leverage the power of PostgreSQL 10 to design, administer and maintain a high-performance database solution Key Features Obtain optimal PostgreSQL 10 database performance, ranging from initial design to routine maintenance Fine tune the performance of your queries and avoid the common pitfalls that can slow your system down Contains tips and tricks on scaling successful database installations, and ensuring a highly available PostgreSQL solution Book Description PostgreSQL database servers have a common set of problems that they encounter as their usage gets heavier and requirements get more demanding. Peek into the future of your PostgreSQL 10 database's problems today. Know the warning signs to look for and how to avoid the most common issues before they even happen. Surprisingly, most PostgreSQL database applications evolve in the same way—choose the right hardware, tune the operating system and server memory use, optimize queries against the database and CPUs with the right indexes, and monitor every layer, from hardware to queries, using tools from inside and outside PostgreSQL. Also, using monitoring insight, PostgreSQL database applications continuously rework the design and configuration. On reaching the limits of a single server, they break things up; connection pooling, caching, partitioning, replication, and parallel queries can all help handle increasing database workloads. By the end of this book, you will have all the knowledge you need to design, run, and manage your PostgreSQL solution while ensuring high performance and high availability What you will learn Learn best practices for scaling PostgreSQL 10 installations Discover the best hardware for developing high-performance PostgreSQL applications Benchmark your whole system – from hardware to application Learn by real examples how server parameters impact performance Discover PostgreSQL 10 features for partitioning and parallel query Monitor your server, both inside and outside the database Design and implement a good replication system on PostgreSQL 10 Who this book is for This book is designed for database administrators and PostgreSQL architects who already use or plan to exploit the features of PostgreSQL 10 to design and maintain a high-performance PostgreSQL database. A working knowledge of SQL, and some experience with PostgreSQL will be helpful in getting the most out of this book.
