Download or read book A Technique for Observing the Social Behavior of Nursery School Children Classic Reprint written by Alice Marie Loomis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Technique for Observing the Social Behavior of Nursery School Children First, at an early stage in life such a large proportion of total social interaction is expressed by physical contact that a statistical study of physical contacts made spontaneously by children of this age will reveal characteristic individual diferences. Second, the development of a technique for obtaining these data will produce material of assistance in certain problems of method which are inherent in all controlled observation. Obviously, physical contact is only one portion of physical ex pression, for it does not include gestures, facial expression, and expressive movements of the entire body, while physical expres sion itself is one of the three means of communication with asso ciates - physical expression, language, and use of materials - into which Rugg, Krueger, and Sondergaard2 have divided all social interaction. Book Ways of Studying Children

Download or read book Ways of Studying Children written by Millie Almy and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 1979 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the widely used Ways of Studying Children in 1959, young children and education have experienced many new influences, including an increased emphasis on learning in the early years. Focusing on children under the age of eight, this enlarged edition analyzes theories and practices that have had an impact on the study of young children, such as the insights of Jean Piaget and the use of behavioral objectives.New applications of child study relevant to bilingual children, youngsters from diverse cultures, and handicapped children are provided. In a balanced way, the authors consider controversial questions of school records versus children's privacy, standardization and individual development, cognitive and emotional growth, excessive testing versus other ways of appraising progress. Up-to-date lists of suggested readings at the end of each chapter offer additional opportunities for learning and growth to experienced or beginning teachers.Reviewers praised Ways of Studying Children as practical and readable, valuable not only to teachers but also to supervisors, curriculum coordinators, parents, and others interested in education. The new edition adds special appeal for teachers in preschool programs, day-care centers, and kindergarten through second grade. The authors offer a detailed, caring perspective on individual child development that concentrates on the whole child. They are concerned not only with the study of young children, but also with the realities faced by early childhood teachers today. “The wisdom of child sense and teacher sense in this book, together with its comfortable style, will, of themselves, give it an abiding place on my shelf.” —From the Foreword by David Elkind

Book Social Behavior and Skills in Children

Download or read book Social Behavior and Skills in Children written by Johnny L. Matson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-18 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That children are capable of pathology—not only such conditions as ADHD and learning disabilities, but also such "adult" disorders as anxiety and depression—stands as a defining moment in psychology’s recent history. Within this recognition is the understanding that the social skills deficits that accompany these disorders must be targeted for assessment and treatment to ensure optimal functioning in school, with peers, and in later transitions to puberty and adulthood. Social Behavior and Skills in Children cuts across disciplinary lines to clarify the scope of assessment options and interventions for a wide range of disorders. A panel of leading scholars reviews current research, discusses social deficits unique to specific disorders, and identifies evidence-based best practices in one authoritative, approachable reference. This volume: Discusses theoretical models of social skills as they relate to assessment and treatment. Analyzes the etiology of social behavior problems in children and the relation between these problems and psychopathology. Reviews 48 norm-referenced measures of social skills in children. Examines the range of evidence-based social skills interventions. Addresses challenging behaviors, such as aggression and self-injury. Focuses on specific conditions, including developmental disabilities, conduct disorders, ADHD, chronic medical illness, depression, anxiety, and severe psychopathology. Social Behavior and Skills in Children is an essential reference for university libraries as well as a must-have volume for researchers, graduate students, and clinicians in child, and school psychology, special education, and other related fields.
