Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Teaching Plan of Grammar: Prepared by a Committee The author has tried to make the definitions as simple and clear as possible without sacrificing accuracy. He has purposely avoided baby definitions, such as: A noun is a name-word; a verb is an action-word; an adjective is a quality-word. The whole purpose Of the pamphlet and Of the nomenclature movement generally, is to avoid the waste involved in teaching a child something in one grade or class or school which he must unlearn in the next. Economy of learning requires that what we teach at any stage must remain true ever after. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Teaching Plan of Grammar Any one with large experience in supervision must be aware that it is difficult to secure satisfactory results in grammar. I learned this lesson nearly twenty years ago, while I was principal of an elementary school. A superintendent gave me the hint, after visiting all the classes of the school, that grammar needed attention. In an effort to discover the cause of our failure, I came upon this condition: The teacher of the highest class informed me that the children came to him without knowing any grammar; the next lower teacher gave the same excuse; and similar reports came from all the teachers clear down to the fifth grade, where the subject started. They were all right; and this was the reason: There was no plan in the school to analyze the subject, arrange it in orderly sequence, articulate grade with grade, and provide for systematic reviews. Each teacher interpreted the syllabus for himself. The result was just what it will be in any school where the conditions are similar. Although each teacher worked hard and faithfully, grammar was a failure. I therefore prepared a plan for the school which was published later in a pamphlet edited by me, entitled, Practical School Problems. Book English Grammar

Download or read book English Grammar written by Henry L. Boltwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Grammar: And How to Teach It The principal reason for adding another Grammar to the many already in print, is the fact that another is needed. In no branch of Common School study does the labor expended appear to produce so little in the way of results. It has even been discussed in State Teachers' Associations, whether the study of Gram mar is productive of any good. And, since the facts pertaining to language are certainly worth knowing, the fair conclusion is, that the facts can be presented in some form better suited to the necessities of teachers and pupils than any which has yet been tried. This volume presents a method of teaching Grammar which has been carefully tested in the school-room. The book contains a selection of the facts pertaining to lan guage. In teaching for many years, one learns that certain facts are to be retained firmly, certain others to be read, or used as illustrations, and others used as han dles bv which to grasp and hold other facts. Gramma rians attempting to make their school grammars complete treatises upon the study of language, have put so much in them that they have bewildered and disgusted the pupil. A grammar should be judged by what it leaves out as much as by what it contains. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-10-08 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the PREFACE. The teaching of English is the most complex, the most difficult, and the most important work of the elementary school teacher. It includes reading, word study, phonetics, composition, and grammar. Each of these is a good-sized job by itself; and the possible combinations of them and the methods of teaching them are almost infinite. We have a deluge of "language" books for the use of pupils, every page of which is usually a medley of the various elements named above. It is the kind of correlation which results in a superficial impression and a confused notion of what is learned. As we ascend in the grades the various subjects and parts of subjects should be isolated for thoroughness of drill and clearness of conception. Departmental teaching is a device which automatically accomplishes such isolation. As the pupil gets older he himself is able to perceive the interrelations of knowledge, so that it is no longer necessary for the teacher to make all the connections. For these reasons there comes a time, beginning in the fifth or sixth grade, when grammar should be taught as grammar, reading as reading, and composition as composition. Each of these should be graded into steps, easy at first, and proceeding gradually to the more difficult until the entire science or art is mastered. During the whole process the relations of grammar, reading, and composition should be pointed out, so that each is seen in the light of the others and each is illustrated by the others. But the correlation should no longer be so complete that the subjects lose their individuality. By the time a pupil reaches the eighth grade he should have a systematic knowledge of grammar as such, composition as such, and literature as such....

Book The Grammar Plan Book

Download or read book The Grammar Plan Book written by Constance Weaver and published by Heinemann Educational Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to Connie Weaver, generations of teachers have come to understand that the most efficient way to teach grammar that's relevant for writing is to embed it within writing instruction. Now her Grammar Plan Book is designed with precisely one thing in mind: to be the best resource you've ever used for teaching grammar to strengthen writing. This new book helps you apply a limited amount of grammar instruction directly to writing and enables you to map out instruction in the way that best serves the needs of your students. A complete planning tool, The Grammar Plan Book has two complementary parts. Part One describes an overarching framework for high-quality grammar instruction in conjunction with the process of writing. It offers: engaging examples of effective teaching demonstrations of how that teaching has improved students' use of grammatical options in writing suggestions for deciding which editing conventions to teach an informal analysis of the grammatical content of typical ACT practice exams. The Plan Book also contains ideas for encouraging students to make independent use of what they've learned in their own writing and about how to apply grammatical insights to enhance and improve their writing, from adding details to editing appropriately. Then in Part Two, Weaver presents an exceptional tool for preparing to teach grammar related to improving writing: a minimal grammar handbook for teachers that doubles as a lesson planner. Everything you need to know to teach major grammatical options, stylistic features, and conventions is included: basic grammatical functions within the sentence grammatical options for adding details and sentence fluency connectors (transitions) for organizational flow parallelism and other rhetorical devices for emphasis and effect, style, and voice stylistic options (dialect versus "standard") for different audiences and purposes conventions most important for edited American English "rules" that don't necessarily rule effective published writing. With a designated column for your notes, special lay-flat binding for your convenience, and helpful, comprehensive coverage of important grammatical concepts, The Grammar Plan Book is designed with one thing in mind: to be the best resource you've ever used for teaching grammar to strengthen writing.

Book The Teaching of Normal Grammar

Download or read book The Teaching of Normal Grammar written by Frederic Burk and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Normal Grammar: Prepared for the Use of Student-Teachers of Teaching in the San Francisco State Normal Training Schools This Bulletin is intended as a manual (with the Sentence Book) for the introduction to the study of grammar. The methodology will be confined to this pamphlet, and the sentences used in each of the exercises are grouped in the accompanying Sentence Book. During the past year, this plan of beginning the study of grammar has been worked out with the students teaching grammar in our Training School, and it is now printed for the guidance of the student-teachers who continue the work for the ensuing year. Part I contains the work upon the construction of the sentence. Part II, which will not be published for some months, will deal with the methodology of syntax and with the application of grammatical knowledge to correct written composition and oral speech. The State text will be used as a final review in the eighth grade after the work covered by Part I and Part II has been completed. d104s in grammar are compendiums of reference authorities, not books suitable for teaching grammar. They offer no methodology, but simply state in logical order the knowledge which ought finally to be acquired. This manual offers a graded series of steps in teaching grammatical knowledge. No very radical position is taken to elide the unnecessary and useless elements of usual grammar texts, but some important steps are taken in this matter by omissions of useless distinctions in the classes of adjectives, adverbs, nouns, and pronouns. The goal of grammar teaching is not to teach the pupil to speak or write language correctly. These abilities are only acquired by habit. Children learn to speak correctly without any grammatical knowledge, provided they hear the correct forms. There are two stages in learning to use language correctly: first, to have the correct form as a copy; and secondly, to acquire this form as a reflex habit. This copy may be obtained, as young children obtain it, by imitation; or it may be obtained by grammatical study. Grammar, then, at best, is a poor substitute for a correct copy given by imitation. This copy obtained either by imitation or by grammatical analysis, it remains in both cases to work this form into a reflex habit by tine method of repetition. The errors which any individual commits are in very close approximation to the errors which as a child he commonly hears. The number of errors committed by the average person circulating in the avenues of general intelligence are really comparatively few. The amount of grammar we give is quite out of proportion. We do not commit errors beyond the limits of the errors of general hearing usage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
