Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Teachers' Handbook in Geography, Vol. 1: North and South America The real problem in our geography teaching is now, as it always has been, how to incorporate the text-book in our scheme so that it shall prove a helpful factor rather than a limitation and a handicap. The notion is happily obsolete that a teacher plus a text-book constitute the conditions for a geography course. Every teacher nowadays appreciates, to her sorrow, the abysmal hiatus between the text-book in geography and the specific needs of the geography lesson. The radical expedient of dispensing altogether with the text-book is sometimes attempted, under especially favorable conditions such as obtain in some normal schools and colleges. But none of these departures has ever proved itself adequate, to the satisfaction of schoolmen at large, in the matters of scope and continuity. We are learning to regard coldly the sporadic schemes whose application calls for special conditions, among the latter being an ideal teacher, an ideal pupil, and a made-to-order environment. Those whose vocation lies in the shaping of material for teaching cannot realize too keenly that their real audience must for all time be the average teacher, toiling in average surroundings. Laying theories aside and addressing ourselves to the actual conditions, we find a vast herd of teachers doing what little they can for a vaster herd of pupils, under circumstances which, in the cities at least, could not readily be worse. And the future holds forth no promise that this herding aspect will be materially modified. In the light of these things the much abused text-book, be its failings what they may, is an indispensable boon to the grade teacher, and might well prove a safeguard in the experimentation higher up. The limitations of the text-book are defined in its name - text: something to be elaborated, developed, worked out. The material included is a geography course in a potential sense only. Every text-book author is mindful of this limitation of his work. And he devotes certain captions, chapters, or appendices to the outlining of collateral material which he hopes will be utilized by the user of the text. The author thus makes a definite requisition for a collaborator whose duty it shall be to develop the text into material suitable for lesson-giving. By general consent this task of collaboration has heretofore fallen to the grade teacher. And it is at this point, I think, that we shall find the fundamental weak spot in our teaching of geography. The history of geography is closely connected with the history of human society Geography embraces both the physical and human worlds, and aims to bridge natural and human sciences. For a geographer, although the environment and its conservation is a crucial item, it is also fundamentally concerned with the living standards of humankind. Although its wide embrace may be seen as a weakness, diversification is also strength and an attraction. Approaches are multidisciplinary, exploring the complex linkages between the cultural and the natural. These favor cross-cultural communication and mutual understanding at a global scale. There is a geographical basis to most of the outstanding political problems, and geographical reasons to explain them. The subject matter of the geography theme is presented basically on how the subject matter is taught presently at the universities, and following the many paths its practitioners are following in doing research. It introduces modern subject matters and goes much further than a simple description of places and travels. The theme has been divided into four main topics: Foundations, Physical Geography, Human Geography, and Technical matters. The scope of the foundation topic is to present an overview of the basis of the geographical field, its scope, history, methods, and its importance in education. The chapters included are Main Stages of the Development, Theory and Methods, and Geographical Education. The Physical Geography topic includes the historical background of the geographical study of the Earth natural environment, and the main fields cultivated by geographers. It consists of eight chapters on basic research fields, which are Geomorphology, Climatology, Hydrology, Biogeography, Soil Geography, Coastal Systems, Ocean Geography, Mountain Geoecology, and two chapters on environmental issues: Natural Hazards and Land Degradation and Desertification. In the Human Geography topic six chapters discuss the more current fields, that is: Population, Cultural and Social, Agricultural and Rural, Industries and Transport, Economic Activities and Urban Geography. Three chapters present subjects developed more recently: Medical, Political and Tourism geographies. Finally, the Regional approach is presented as the most traditional and integrative field. These volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs.

This series has been prepared for distribution after numerous and urgent requests have been received asking for such a work. These requests have come directly from the teachers of the State and indicate a want that has not been supplied. Part I consists of methods and devices for the systematic teaching of Map Geography. Its main purposes are, (1) to save the time and energy of the teacher; (2) to put the material into such shape that it can be readily grasped, retained, and reproduced at will by the pupils. While it may be used independently, it is designed to accompany others that are to follow and forms an integral part of the Course of Study in Geography as set forth in the entire series. Part II, Journey Geography for Beginners, is based primarily upon eighty-five tersely stated topics intimately interwoven with Map Geography as presented in Part I, so that together they will leave a vivid impression of the region studied, together with some of the most important facts about it. References to supplementary books have been so arranged that the teacher will be able to give the course from them. At the same time she will have material left to assign as seat work following each portion of the journey covering the parts of the earth that are best known by people in the world at large. Such localities as we see mentioned in the newspapers; such localities as we hear spoken of in friendly intercourse among people who are not specialists in this particular subject. These people have interests in the world because it is the "Enduring home of man" and is worthy therefore of such interest. The future plans for this series are as follows: (1) A Course of Study in Geography for the Fifth and Sixth Grades which is based upon the State Series Introductory Geography. It consists, first of all, of a quite complete exposition of the method of presenting the Home Geography so that it will be more easily handled by the teacher and will also be more profitable to the pupil. The remainder will be primarily a suggestion as to the topics to be considered, together with their time value, supplementary references and points to be emphasized. Where it is deemed best, the method of handling the topic will be indicated. (2) A Course of Study in Geography for the Seventh and Eighth Grades based upon the State Advanced Geography and following practically the same lines as the one for the Fifth and Sixth Grades. These have all been used, tested, and revised as occasion demanded, and are the outgrowth of the work in the Elementary Department of the Chico State Normal School. They are designed as a guide to the content of a complete course in Geography and as a labor-saving device for the teachers, who ordinarily has more than she can do without overtaxing her nervous supply.
