Book excerpt: A Tea Garden in Tivoli: American Garden Design Inspired by the Way of Tea is a guide to garden design and flower arranging woven around the story of a unique garden in the Hudson Valley of New York. "Great gardens in small spaces" is the theme. Gardens need not be Versailles-sized to be inspiring. This is an intriguing and accessible introduction to the Japanese garden aesthetic for the backyard gardener by veteran Zen and Tea student Bettina Mueller. Drawing from her decades long study of the Japanese Tea tradition where great - even legendary - gardens are small by necessity, Bettina sets out to turn her 1/8 acre backyard in the small Hudson Valley village of Tivoli, New York into a private world of beauty and tranquility. Limited edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the ironic story of how Italian Renaissance and Baroque gardens encouraged the preservation of the American wilderness and ultimately fostered the creation of the world's first national park system. Told via Mitchell's sometimes disastrous and humorous travels - from the gardens of southern Italy up through Tuscany and the lake island gardens - the book is filled with history, folklore, myths, and legends of Western Europe, including a detailed history of the labyrinth, a common element in Renaissance gardens. In his attempt to understand the Italian garden in detail, Mitchell set out to create one on his own property - with a labyrinth.

Book Consumption and the World of Goods

Download or read book Consumption and the World of Goods written by John Brewer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of past society in terms of what it consumes rather than what it produces is - relatively speaking - a new development. The focus on consumption changes the whole emphasis and structure of historical enquiry. While human beings usually work within a single trade or industry as producers, as, say, farmers or industrial workers, as consumers they are active in many different markets or networks. And while history written from a production viewpoint has, by chance or design, largely been centred on the work of men, consumption history helps to restore women o the mainstream. The history of consumption demands a wide range of skills. It calls upon the methods and techniques of many other disciplines, including archaeology, sociology, social and economic history, anthropology and art criticism. But it is not simply a melting-pot of techniques and skills, brought to bear on a past epoch. Its objectives amount to a new description of a past culture in its totality, as perceived through its patterns of consumption in goods and services. Consumption and the World of Goods is the first of three volumes to examine history from this perspective, and is a unique collaboration between twenty-six leading subject specialists from Europe and North America. The outcome is a new interpretation of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, one that shapes a new historical landscape based on the consumption of goods and services.

The creation of a Japanese garden combines respect for nature with adherence to simple principles of aesthetics and structure. In Japanese Garden Design, landscape architect Marc Peter Keane presents the history and development of the classical metaphors that underlie all Japanese gardens. Keane describes the influences of Confucian, Shinto and Buddhist principles that have linked poetry and philosophy to the tangible metaphor of the garden in Japanese culture. Creative inspiration is found in the prehistoric origin of Japanese concepts of nature; the gardens of Heian aristocrats; the world-renowned Zen garden, or rock garden; the tea garden; courtyard garden; and stroll garden. Detailed explanations of basic design concepts identify and interpret the symbolism of various garden forms and demonstrate these principles in use today in Japanese landscape architecture. Book Landscape and the Environment

Download or read book Landscape and the Environment written by Jane Bingham and published by Heinemann-Raintree Library. This book was released on 2006 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In every part of the world, in every generation, the landscape and environment have fascinated and inspired artists. They have expressed their feelings through paintings, or altered their surroundings by making gardens or sculptures. Whatever forms their creations have taken, artists have managed to capture their visions of the environment for us to share. This book explains how art styles have developed through time, and how artists' techniques add to our understanding of their work. The subject of war and conflict is captured in a wide range of media, including photography, painting, sculpture, posters, textiles, and film. The information to help interpret works of art and understand the time in history in which they were created are included in this book.
