Book Seaweed Cultivation for Renewable Resources

Download or read book Seaweed Cultivation for Renewable Resources written by Kimon T. Bird and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1987 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970's and 80's, major research and development programs were launched to explore the possibility of using marine biomass as a source of energy. This volume, the first publication of its kind to appear on seaweed cultivation, not only reviews the accomplishments of the aforementioned programs, but also describes how this research relates to seaweed cultivation for other products, such as food, feed, and high value chemicals. Topics covered include the features of marine biomass production, biotechnological manipulations of marine algae, and marine biomass conversion to energy, as well as economics. The chapters, written by many of the major participants in the marine biomass program, synthesize a large number of technical reports, journal articles, symposia and conference proceedings and technology transfer meetings. The book will be of interest to mariculturists, marine engineers, chemists, biotechnologists, bioconversion scientists/engineers and companies dealing with industrial polysaccharides or other algal products.

Book The Biology and Ecology of Giant Kelp Forests

Download or read book The Biology and Ecology of Giant Kelp Forests written by David R. Schiel and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largest seaweed, giant kelp (Macrocystis) is the fastest growing and most prolific of all plants found on earth. Growing from the seafloor and extending along the ocean surface in lush canopies, giant kelp provides an extensive vertical habitat in a largely two-dimensional seascape. It is the foundation for one of the most species-rich, productive, and widely distributed ecological communities in the world. Schiel and Foster’s scholarly review and synthesis take the reader from Darwin’s early observations to contemporary research, providing a historical perspective for the modern understanding of giant kelp evolution, biogeography, biology, and physiology. The authors furnish a comprehensive discussion of kelp species and forest ecology worldwide, with considerations of human uses and abuses, management and conservation, and the current and likely future impacts of global change. This volume promises to be the definitive treatise and reference on giant kelp and its forests for many years, and it will appeal to marine scientists and others who want a better appreciation and understanding of these wondrous forests of the sea.

Book Evolutionary Ecology of Plant Herbivore Interaction

Download or read book Evolutionary Ecology of Plant Herbivore Interaction written by Juan Núñez-Farfán and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-30 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant-herbivore interactions are a central topic in evolutionary ecology. Historically, their study has been a cornerstone for coevolutionary theory. Starting from classic ecological studies at the phenotypic level, it has since expanded to molecular and genomic approaches. After a historical perspective, the book’s subsequent chapters cover a wide range of topics: from populations to ecosystems; plant- and herbivore-focused studies; in natural and in man-modified ecosystems; and both micro- and macro-evolutionary levels. All chapters include valuable background information and empirical evidence. Given its scope, the book will be of interest to both students and researchers, and will hopefully stimulate further research in this exciting field of evolutionary biology.

Book Algal Toxins Nature Occurrence Effect and Detection

Download or read book Algal Toxins Nature Occurrence Effect and Detection written by Valtere Evangelista and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-06-27 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures and seminars given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on “Sensor Systems for Biological Threads: The Algal Toxins Case”, held in Pisa, Italy in October, 2007. The Institute was sponsored and funded by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. It is my pleasant duty to thank this institution. This ASI offered updated information on how far the research on algal toxins has gone in the exploration of structures, biosynthesis and regulation of toxins, and the development of technology for bio-monitoring these c- pounds. Algae can form heavy growths in ponds, lakes, reservoirs and sl- moving rivers throughout the world; algae can house toxins which are - ually released into water when the cells rupture or die. Hundreds of toxins have been identified so far. Detection methods, including rapid screening, have been developed to help us learning more about them, especially to find out which toxins are a real threat for people and what conditions encourage their production and accumulation. Early detection of algal toxins is an - portant aspect for public safety and natural environment, and significant efforts are underway to develop effective and reliable tools that can be used for this purpose.

Book Evolutionary Biogeography of the Marine Algae of the North Atlantic

Download or read book Evolutionary Biogeography of the Marine Algae of the North Atlantic written by David J. Garbary and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algal systematists, geologists and evolutionary biologists provide a synthesis of the evolutionary biogeography of red, brown, and green algae of the North Atlantic Ocean also considering their relationships with species and genera in the Arctic and Pacific Oceans as well as other subtropical and tropical seas. The history of the Atlantic Basin and its connections to other ocean basins is treated from the geological, paleontological and paleoclimatic perspective. This is contrasted with biogeographic analyses of marine animal systems and the role of plant/animal interactions in evolution. Some of the approaches include traditional systematic studies, cladistic analysis, the experimental evaluation of environment in establishing distribution limits and the application of molecular biology.
