Download or read book A Task for Sisyphus written by Iulius Rostas and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite an increasing number of EU and government initiatives in their favor, the situation of Roma in Europe has only worsened. This book explores the many miscalculations, misconceptions, and blunders that have led to this failure. Looking at Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Romania, Rostas shows how policy makers in each country have mishandled already confused EU policy, from failing to define “Roma” to not having a way to evaluate their own progress. Rostas further argues that the alleged successes of these policies were actually the product of poor information and sometimes outright deception. Examining perennial topics among Roma like school segregation and political representation, the author shows how often the so-called success of Roma policies can be fallacious and simply pave the way for further problems. Rostas maintains that when the EU’s Framework for Roma program comes to an end in 2020, there must be a fundamental shift in policy for there to be any real improvement for Roma. Policy makers will have to address Roma issues not only in terms of poverty and social exclusion but also in terms of the particular nature of Romani ethnic identity. This shift requires reconceiving Roma as a “politically insular minority” and rearranging the power dynamics of local government to ensure that when the new era of Roma policy begins Roma themselves will have a voice in its formulation.
Download or read book The Myth of Sisyphus And Other Essays written by Albert Camus and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most influential works of this century, The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays is a crucial exposition of existentialist thought. Influenced by works such as Don Juan and the novels of Kafka, these essays begin with a meditation on suicide; the question of living or not living in a universe devoid of order or meaning. With lyric eloquence, Albert Camus brilliantly posits a way out of despair, reaffirming the value of personal existence, and the possibility of life lived with dignity and authenticity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “It scares the hell out of me. Every day, politics gets closer to the reality you project.”—Bob Cone, inventor of Liquid LightThe second strike is on.John Galt's strike of the “men of the mind” brought down Roger Thompson's dictatorship and ushered in a conservative dream: no taxes, regulations, or social programs. The end of government services such as policing, firefighting, and infrastructure-building has created a vacuum filled by unscrupulous and unregulated businesses that few can afford. With no safety or labor standards, most Americans have abandoned their homes to work several jobs in the cities. After eight years of living in a dog-eat-dog wasteland, America has elected liberal Senator Laurence Sterling (D-VT) president.Mere days before Sterling's inauguration, twenty-six-year-old World Times reporter Evelyn Riley hears that in recent months both absenteeism and productivity have risen at General Motors, one of the two remaining automobile manufacturers in Detroit, and decides to investigate. Her mother's death decades before reminds her daily of the importance of family and human connections. Little does Evelyn know that John Galt is planning his return to fight Sterling, or that this time a new generation of labor leaders is preparing a strike of its own.“If you have ever read Atlas Shrugged, whether you liked it or not, you really should read this book.”—David Scott Moyer “I really like your quote 'I live for Humanity, and I ask Humanity to live for me (and for everyone else).' That's the way it should be.”—Paul Buchheit, professor of economic justice at DePaul UniversityFor more information, please view sisyphusshruggedbook.com or robertpeate.com.
Download or read book Sisyphus s Boulder written by Eric Dietrich and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consciousness lies at the core of being human. Therefore, to understand ourselves, we need a theory of consciousness. In Sisyphus's Boulder, Eric Dietrich and Valerie Hardcastle argue that we will never get such a theory because consciousness has an essential property that prevents it from ever being explained. Consequently, philosophical debates over materialism and dualism are a waste of time. Scientific explanations of consciousness fare no better. Scientists do study consciousness, and such investigations will continue to grow and advance. However, none of them will ever reveal what consciousness is. In addition, given the centrality of consciousness in philosophy, Dietrich and Hardcastle claim that philosophy itself needs to change. That the central problems of philosophy persist is actually a profound epistemic fact about humans. Philosophy, then, is a limit to what humans can understand. (Series A)

In the third essay, The Buddha and Catch-22, the similarities between Joseph Heller’s novel and the Buddha’s Teaching are discussed. The next essay, The Myth of Sisyphus, is a Buddhist reinterpretation of the Greek myth of Sisyphus, which is symbolizing the endless, recurring nature of our tasks. Ven. Bodhesako also discusses Albert Camus’ interpretation of this myth. The essay Faith investigates the relevance of faith in the Buddha’s Teaching, while the last essay, Being and Craving, deals with the Buddhist concept of craving and its traditional interpretation.
