I know its imperfections. Much of it was written before my twenty-first year, and with my longer poems, "Croynan Hall," and "The Lady in the Mask" - as yet unpublished - is the product of my college days. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heimburg, a Tale: And Other Poems Each particular castle is the theme of some wild and wondrous tradition; Of every town and hamlet some tale of love or chivalry is told. But the reader of a legend cannot duly appreciate it. It is when standing within the deserted halls, where once rang the sounds of gaiety and mirth, - when gazing upon the scene which speaks Of splendour and magnificence gone by, that we most love to let our thoughts wander far, far back, and linger as in a dream around the past - then, as the tale falls from the lips Of the uneducated shepherd or lowly peasant, in all the original simplicity with which it has been handed down from generation to generation, while pointing to the crumbling pile he tells Of the hand that reared it, Of the people who defended it, of the crime that destroyed it, - our hearts confess to emotions elsewhere unknown. Of the poems translated from the German introduced in the follow ing pages, I have lately heard that some have already appeared in English. My only wonder is that this has not long since been the case with the whole of Uhland's works without possessing the power Of Schiller and Goethe, or the imagination of Hauff, the style Of Uhland has a delicacy to which the former cannot always lay claim. As I have never seen any of these translations, I have not withheld my own version from this small volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Croynan Hall: The Maid of the Mask; A Tale of Rothenburg It was my ambition, at first, to produce an epic that might fittingly commemorate the struggles and achievements of the United Empire Loyalists. The following books form a kind of introduction to the real work, but are nevertheless complete in themselves. I have therefore decided to present them to the English-speaking people of America, with the earnest hope that they may not be entirely unacceptable to those interested in the literary possibilities of a great historical period. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales, Poetry, and Fairy Tales It was in one of these pits that three men and two women sat beside a fire which was blazing at the further end. A horse and-a large donkey were eating the grass which grew around them. A covered cart and van were standing, and a low tent with the covering nearly black with smoke, was fastened to the ground with long stakes. A. Large long dog lay curled up near the fire, and every now and then he lifted up his head as if in the act of listening. On the fire hung a large round pot; the way this was suspended was by a short chain fastened to two stakes, which were stuck in the ground. Book The Burial of the Count of Orgaz Other Poems

Download or read book The Burial of the Count of Orgaz Other Poems written by Pablo Picasso and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pablo Picasso may be the most famous and influential artist of the twentieth century. What few know is that in 1935, at age 54, Picasso stopped painting, and for a time devoted himself entirely to poetry. Even after eventually resuming his visual work, Picasso continued to write, in a characteristic torrent, until 1959 - leaving a body of poems that Andre Breton praised as, "an intimate journal, both of the feelings and the senses, such as has never been kept before." Near the end of his life, Picasso himself would tell a friend that, "long after his death his writing would gain recognition and encyclopedias would say: 'Picasso, Pablo Ruiz - Spanish poet who dabbled in painting, drawing and sculpture.'"" "Jerome Rothenberg and Pierre Joris have overseen a project to translate the majority of this writing into English for the first time. Working from Picasso's Spanish and French (he wrote in both languages), they have enlisted the help of over a dozen colleagues in order to mark, as they note in their introduction, "Picasso's entry into our own time." Picasso's poems are as protean, erotic, scatological, and experimental as his visual art - yet they arrive as a twenty-first century surprise, even for many devotees."

Book The absurd in literature

Download or read book The absurd in literature written by Neil Cornwell and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neil Cornwell's study, while endeavouring to present an historical survey of absurdist literature and its forbears, does not aspire to being an exhaustive history of absurdism. Rather, it pauses on certain historical moments, artistic movements, literary figures and selected works, before moving on to discuss four key writers: Daniil Kharms, Franz Kafka, Samuel Beckett and Flann O'Brien. The absurd in literature will be of compelling interest to a considerable range of students of comparative, European (including Russian and Central European) and English literatures (British Isles and American) – as well as those more concerned with theatre studies, the avant-garde and the history of ideas (including humour theory). It should also have a wide appeal to the enthusiastic general reader.
