Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arriving in Taiwan to begin a stint teaching English, Louis K. allows himself to be seduced by a mysterious woman in a bank. Back at her apartment, she turns out to be a witch, and after changing him into a Scotch terrier mutt, adds him to her backyard kennel of previous conquests, all now dogs. This is the improbable beginning of Eric Mader's novel of canine life in Taiwan's capital. Once set loose on Taipei's streets, Louis embarks on the almost impossible mission of getting himself changed back. But as the weeks turn into months, he finds that his human personality is slipping away, swallowed up by ever sharper canine senses and an ever weakening grip on his once human self. A zany, multilayered satire of expat expectations and inter-cultural vertigo. [This is a substantially re-edited 2017 edition of the original novel.] An engrossing read . . . A remarkable and high-spirited performance. It's the sort of book that could overnight easily become a local cult item. -Taipei Times Recreates the streets of a vibrant, tawdry and little-known Asian city. Future critics will consecrate Mader as the Defoe of Dogdom. -Ryu Makoto, author of The Hospitality of Circumstance and Caught in the Act Mader is . . . an endlessly fascinating eccentric, and absolutely everything he puts his hand to is very well worth reading. -Bradley Winterton, author of Gladovia

Book excerpt: David a U.S. Military veteran rides a downward spiral into the Pallium (the world of the supernatural) torn between life and revenge in the underside of the city of Taipei. He is confronted by evil creatures and gangsters while searching for meaning in his personal loss. Introduction:Caveat Lector, I say this because some books are dangerous. Most works can be picked up and put down leaving you unchanged. I can make you no such promise. In my humble opinion, every truly fascinating manuscript will give you answers, even if the questions were unknown to you. Knowledge, true knowledge, is not a charming collection of factoids to be regurgitated on demand or request. I have come to believe that learning is a process that shakes you to the very foundation of your being. There are many secrets that give you a glimpse into the other worlds. But be warned - once you have opened your mind to the darker possibilities, it will never again be closed. This Pandora's Box has no lid, no hinges and no lock. The only way to see what is contained within is to smash it to bits. This is my attempt to document the events that transpired and it is my humble offering to you, the reader. So Caveat Lector - Reader Beware - or you may receive your own invitation to the dance.Call me Tòmas. This is my name, even though most people either forget to ask for it, or just forget it all together. The story, on the other hand, is not mine. Regardless, I have decided to tell it. My name may find mention before this tale reaches its conclusion; we'll just have to wait and see.As I write these words the dawn has broken, the sun is shining bright, and hope is easy to find in your heart. The blackest night has passed and the shadows of malevolence have grown thin. The evils of the world have retreated once again into the depths awaiting darkness's cold caress. Hope also springs new with the first light of morning; regrettably it is often slain with the setting of the sun.Our lives can be magnificent journeys if we remove the limitations of our own misconceptions. On the other hand, this is a very dangerous endeavor. Our misconceptions of the world are our anchor, and our shield. They hold us back from seeing what the world really contains; they also protect us from what we may not be prepared to confront. Confronting the unknown can be the most important part of this magnificent journey we know as life. In the immensity of time, a human life is as a journey of a drop of rain, plummeting to the earth. To eternity, our lives are but a moment, an hour, or a day; but then again, so much can happen in just a day...Quem deus vult perdere, dementat prius(Original Source Unknown)Whom the gods would destroy, they first drive mad.Excerpt from The G.H.A.S.T. (or Gideon's Handbook for the Accidental Supernatural Tourist)The G.H.A.S.T. was created to help you avoid becoming trapped in the darker worlds. However, the current management feels that the most recent increase in its popularity is due to people trying to find the breaches in the Pallium. Therefore, all entries have been re-edited with this in mind.PLEASE NOTE, if you wish to avoid the darkness, all you need do is apply a reversed logic to the stated techniques, i.e. if you stay near home and remain in familiar surroundings, the chances of seeing anything but the mundane is highly unlikely.Travel Tip Number One:The way to find the darker worlds is look on the ordinary world in a new way. This is best accomplished in a place you have never before been. Finding that which is hidden is far from easy, unfortunately it is possible. The Pallium of the Dance is a sorry shroud for anyone looking with open eyes. It is very difficult to cross the Pallium, however for most of those who have, returning seems to be nearly impossible. You may wish to be very, very certain before you go looking for that which you do not understand.

Book Gypsy Scholars Migrant Teachers and the Global Academic Proletariat

Download or read book Gypsy Scholars Migrant Teachers and the Global Academic Proletariat written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once adjunct teaching was considered a temporary solution to faculty shortages in institutions of higher education. Now it is a permanent and indispensable feature of such institutions, not just in the U.S. but worldwide. This book takes stock of this new development, concentrating primarily on the situation in the humanities. It looks at its impact on the lives of the highly-educated scholars and teachers from many parts of the world; scholars waking up to the sobering fact that higher education presents them with a two-tiered labour market in which they themselves are permanently barred from moving up to the higher tier. To them, being an adjunct teacher means experiencing frustration and humiliation. All essays in this book offer personal accounts of adjuncts’ experiences together with critical reflections on institutional conditions and suggestions for their improvement. In turn defiant, poignant, analytical, exasperated, and sardonic, these essays are always incisive and revealing. Their inside view—a view from below—shows higher education as a world different from how it appears to tenured professors and university administrators, different from that presented in most college brochures. For all those who care about the current state and the future of higher education—no matter if they are teachers, scholars, students, parents, or administrators—this book will offer valuable insights into the working world of academic teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hitch a ride with JW Palmer on a journey of love, joy, pain and awakening, as he rides his bicycle alone across the heartland of America. Bewildered by the blur of events -- two years in Vietnam, four years in college, and six in a mind-numbing marriage -- he was suffering from PTSD. As his wheels turn, he untangles his mind and emotions one revolution at a time. Through a succession of vignettes we get to peer into his soul, as he struggles to evolve within the chrysalis of the '70s. Disillusioned after finishing college in 1974, he and his wife split up and he went looking for answers. As he fights his mind, the wind and the terrain, he meets the amazing people and animals who live in the middle of the country. People are interested in his story, and the shy poet evolves into a skilled storyteller, telling them about his trip and us about his search for the light at the end of the tunnel, as he finds out that the light he is looking for is within ...blazing away like the sun shining at midnight. About the Author: Originally from Richmond, Indiana, Alan Joseph Parker now lives in Portland, Oregon.I wrote my first poem in 1968 sitting on a rock in Vietnam watching the full harvest moon rise through scattered clouds over the mountains, and feeling at peace in the middle of the war. I have been writing ever since. I have hundreds of poems but this is my first novel. Publisher's website: http: //www.sbpra.com/AlanJosephParke

Book excerpt: The papers in this volume were selected for presentation at the Fourth Annual International Computing and Combinatorics Conference (COCOON’98), held on August 12–14, 1998, in Taipei. The topics cover most aspects of theoretical computer science and combinatorics related to computing. Submissions to the conference this year was only conducted electronically. Thanks to the excellent software developed by the system team of the Institute of Information Science, we were able to make virtually all communications through the World Wide Web. A total of 69 papers was submitted in time to be considered, of which 36 papers were accepted for presentation at the conference. In addition to these contributed papers, the conference also included four invited presentations by Christo Papadimitriou, Michael Fishcher, Fan Chung Graham and Rao Kosaraju. It is expected that most of the accepted papers will appear in a more complete form in scienti?c journals. Moreover, selected papers will appear in a special issue of Theoretical Computer Science. We thank all program committee members, their support sta? and referees for excellent work within demanding time constraints. We thank all authors who submitted papers for consideration.
