Book Instruments and Methods for the Radio Detection of High Energy Cosmic Rays

Download or read book Instruments and Methods for the Radio Detection of High Energy Cosmic Rays written by Frank Schröder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-14 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cosmic rays consist of elementary particles with enormous energy which originate from outside our solar system and constantly hit the Earth’s atmosphere. Where do these cosmic rays originate? How does nature accelerate the cosmic-ray particles to energies with orders of magnitude beyond the limits of manmade particle accelerators? What can we learn by measuring the interactions of the cosmic rays with the atmosphere? Digital radio-antenna arrays offer a promising, complementary measurement method for high-energy cosmic rays. This thesis reports on substantial advances in the development of the radio technique, which will be used to address these questions in future experiments.

Book Bayesian Precision Medicine

Download or read book Bayesian Precision Medicine written by Peter F. Thall and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bayesian Precision Medicine presents modern Bayesian statistical models and methods for identifying treatments tailored to individual patients using their prognostic variables and predictive biomarkers. The process of evaluating and comparing treatments is explained and illustrated by practical examples, followed by a discussion of causal analysis and its relationship to statistical inference. A wide array of modern Bayesian clinical trial designs are presented, including applications to many oncology trials. The later chapters describe Bayesian nonparametric regression analyses of datasets arising from multistage chemotherapy for acute leukemia, allogeneic stem cell transplantation, and targeted agents for treating advanced breast cancer. Features: Describes the connection between causal analysis and statistical inference Reviews modern personalized Bayesian clinical trial designs for dose-finding, treatment screening, basket trials, enrichment, incorporating historical data, and confirmatory treatment comparison, illustrated by real-world applications Presents adaptive methods for clustering similar patient subgroups to improve efficiency Describes Bayesian nonparametric regression analyses of real-world datasets from oncology Provides pointers to software for implementation Bayesian Precision Medicine is primarily aimed at biostatisticians and medical researchers who desire to apply modern Bayesian methods to their own clinical trials and data analyses. It also might be used to teach a special topics course on precision medicine using a Bayesian approach to postgraduate biostatistics students. The main goal of the book is to show how Bayesian thinking can provide a practical scientific basis for tailoring treatments to individual patients.

Book Decision Making Uncertainty Imperfection Deliberation and Scalability

Download or read book Decision Making Uncertainty Imperfection Deliberation and Scalability written by Tatiana V. Guy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on uncovering the fundamental forces underlying dynamic decision making among multiple interacting, imperfect and selfish decision makers. The chapters are written by leading experts from different disciplines, all considering the many sources of imperfection in decision making, and always with an eye to decreasing the myriad discrepancies between theory and real world human decision making. Topics addressed include uncertainty, deliberation cost and the complexity arising from the inherent large computational scale of decision making in these systems. In particular, analyses and experiments are presented which concern: • task allocation to maximize “the wisdom of the crowd”; • design of a society of “edutainment” robots who account for one anothers’ emotional states; • recognizing and counteracting seemingly non-rational human decision making; • coping with extreme scale when learning causality in networks; • efficiently incorporating expert knowledge in personalized medicine; • the effects of personality on risky decision making. The volume is a valuable source for researchers, graduate students and practitioners in machine learning, stochastic control, robotics, and economics, among other fields.

Book Blackbody Radiometry

Download or read book Blackbody Radiometry written by Victor Sapritsky and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-19 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first of a two-volume set, focuses on the basic physical principles of blackbody radiometry and describes artificial sources of blackbody radiation, widely used as sources of optical radiation, whose energy characteristics can be calculated on the base of fundamental physical laws. Following a review of radiometric quantities, radiation laws, and radiative heat transfer, it introduces the basic principles of blackbody radiators design, details of their practical implementation, and methods of measuring their defining characteristics, as well as metrological aspects of blackbody-based measurements. Chapters are dedicated to the effective emissivity concept, methods of increasing effective emissivities, their measurement and modeling using the Monte Carlo method, techniques of blackbody radiators heating, cooling, isothermalization, and measuring their temperature. An extensive and comprehensive reference source, this book is of considerable value to students, researchers, and engineers involved in any aspect of blackbody radiometry.

Book Women in World War Two A True Book

Download or read book Women in World War Two A True Book written by Susan Taylor and published by Scholastic Inc.. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War II completely disrupted life in the United States and throughout the world, and it was an empowering turning point in U.S. women's history. Some women joined the armed forces as nurses and pilots. Some went to work outside the home in factories producing munitions, and building ships and airplanes. Some even became spies! But despite all these accomplishments, women were rarely given the recognition they deserved or the same benefits as their male counterparts. This book tells their story. Women are sometimes called the silent protagonists of history. But since before the founding of our nation until now, women have organized, marched, and inspired. They forced change and created opportunity. With engaging text, fun facts, photography, infographics, and art, this new set of books examines how individual women of differing races and socioeconomic status took a stand, and how groups of women lived and fought throughout the history of this country. It looks at how they celebrated victories that included the right to vote, the right to serve their country, and the right to equal employment. The aim of this much-needed set of five books is to bring herstory to young readers!

Book The Lost Island of Amwes Am Wes a True Story

Download or read book The Lost Island of Amwes Am Wes a True Story written by Nasako M. Weires-Madsen and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-08-22 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was truly a man of God. He was vibrant and courageous in his Christian faith. Realizing he was called by God to evangelize the islanders, he was determined to at least touch one heart and change a life amidst great persecutions. Sent by the church in the United States of America, the Christian missionary felt alone and neglected on an island full of people who didn't want to do anything with his Christian God and teachings. When he was ridiculed, laughed at, and mocked, he silently and reverently turned to God for encouragement, wisdom, and guidance. He spent many hours a day in prayers and reading his Bible, asking God for the grace he needs to overcome his trials and tribulations. Then one day, when he decided to leave the rebellious islanders in peace, out of the blue, God spoke through him and prophesied against the indigenous people and their island. Soon after, the prophesy came true and changed the lives of the present generation as well as the future generation forever! Consequently, to this day, the Christian faith is vibrant among the islanders in the Namoluk (Na-mo-look) atoll, Chuuk State, in the Federated States of Micronesia, both home and abroad.
