Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Practice of Medicine, Vol. 1 of 2 IN adding another to the many existing Treatises on the Practice of Medicine, the author may be reasonably expected to show upon What grounds he has ventured to advance a new claim to the public attention, already so fully occupied. He has no other excuse to cfi'er than this; that he has written in obedience to impulses which he could not well resist. Having been engaged, for nearly thirty years, in public and private practice, and, during that time, devoted an almost exclusive attention to the study of diseases and their reme dies, he has accumulated facts, and formed Opinions, which have been long soliciting expression, with an urgency to which he has at length yielded, though unfeignedly distrustful of their sufficient value. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Practice of Medicine IN the composition of this work, an effort has been made to exhibit a distinct View of the essential phenomena and princi ples pertaining to the various subjects which it embraces, with an especial endeavor to avoid the extremes of unsatisfactory brevity on the one hand, and of fatiguing prolixity of detail and discussion on the other. With the exception, therefore, of a few instances in the introductory portion of the work, the author has indulged but little in controversial discussion and general speen lation. His object has been, to give a digest of facts and estab lished principles, rather than of opinions and points of disputation. He has not, however, failed to give an exposition of those patho logical and therapeutic principles, which appeared to him fairly deducible from the particular phenomena brought under consi deration and whenever his own experience and reflections have led him to differ from others, he has freely, though he trusts with becoming deference, stated his sentiments. It will be perceived, that no general doctrine or system of pathology is exclusively or especially, favored in the following pages. Medicine, as it is now generally cultivated, is strictly eclectic. The judicious and unprejudiced physician will neither condemn nor adopt unreservedly any of the leading doctrines advanced in modern times. He will see something to admire and embrace in the systems of Brown, of Cullen, of Darwin, of Broussais - and even of the fanciful Hahnemann although when offered to his acceptance as doctrines of universal application, he may very reasonably refuse his assent. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 922 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Science and Practice of Medicine, or the Pathology and Therapeutics of Internal Diseases The preparation of such a work has been long in contemplation, suggested by the requests of students, and their evident want of a text-book to follow the lectures on this subject in the Medical Schools with which the writer has been connected. The task has finally been executed, in compliance with conditional promises made to stu dents, and to numerous practitioners who had formerly attended these schools, and who have expressed a desire to have the substance of the teaching they had received, in a more precise and permanent form. For reference and study. There are other reasons, however, than the partiality and wishes of former and present students, or the wants of prospective ones, which may be adduced to favor the claims of this work to a place, whatever place that may be, in our literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Medicine: A Systematic Treatise on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases, Designed for the Use of Students and Practitioners of Medicine The belief that a work devoted to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases would be of aid to the medical student in his clinical studies, and useful, as a book of reference, to the practitioner, has led to the preparation of this volume. The plan of the work, and the arrangement of diseases, have been made with special reference to Clinical Medicine. In the Introduction are considered topics of importance as bearing on medical study and practice. Conforming to the nosological method now generally adopted, diseases are divided into General and Local, and the latter are dis tributed into classes corresponding with the different physiological sys tems, namely, the Respiratory, Circulatory, Digestive, Urinary, and Nervous. Each of the six sections is prefaced by preliminary observa tions relating to Symptomatology, and other topics of practical importance as bearing on the clinical study and treatment of the diseases considered in that section. As far as practicable, diseases are arranged by grouping together those of which the diagnosis involves differentiation from each other. Regarded from a clinical standpoint, the advantage of this arrangement is more than compensatory for any apparent inconvenience in making hasty reference to particular diseases. Such reference will be found sufficiently facilitated by the conspicuous headings throughout the text, combined with an analytical table of contents and a full index. Of the several sections, the one devoted to Diseases of the Nervous System occupies the largest space. The activity of pathological and clinical research has given to this province of medicine, within late years. Book Therapeutics and Materia Medica Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Therapeutics and Materia Medica Vol 1 of 2 written by Alfred Stille and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 1004 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Therapeutics and Materia Medica, Vol. 1 of 2: A Systematic Treatise on the Action and Uses of Medicinal Agents, Including Their Description and History Sous years have elapsed since the present work was undertaken and announced, but its completion has been delayed by several causes, the chief of which were the author's election to the chair of Theory and Practice of Medicine in the Medical Department of Pennsylvania Col lege, and the onerous duties which that ofiice imposed upon him during a period of five years. The studies which they rendered necessary have tended greatly to enlarge the original plan of his treatise, and have also, it is hoped, rendered it more worthy than it would otherwise have been of a favorable reception by physicians and students of Medicine. Intended for those who desire to learn the surest methods of curing disease, it has seemed not only allowable, but imperative, that in the form of the work scientific unity and precision should be subordinated to practical utility. At the same time, it would have been unpardonable to leave out of sight those fragments of scientific knowledge which may one day serve to bridge the chasm between theory and practice, and convert the precepts of therapeutics into laws. Treatment. It is difficult to suggest any philosophical mode of meeting the disease. Should evidences of excitement present them selves, they must be reduced by appropriate antiphlogistics. Coun ter-irritation, by means of a seton, has done some good at first; but the system has speedily become accustomed to it. It is a consolation, however, that the constitutional disturbance - as before remarked - is often exceedingly slight, or null; and that a person may be affected with it for years, without the system appearing to suffer. In such cases, it ought not to be interfered with; especially as we know of no rational means for removing it.
