This book was released on 2015-07-31 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That the true religion made by honored and loved by all men, the first requisite is that it be made clearly known to all. Many persons are aliens to Catholicity because they do not understand it as it is; many members of the Church do not love it as they should, and do not live up to its laws, because their knowledge of it is very imperfect. The conviction is general among educated Catholics, that a more thorough study of our holy religion is, just now, a special desideratum in this country. This study must be promoted chiefly among the young, on whose proper education the future of religion principally depends. Aeterna Press

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catholic Religion: A Statement of Christian Teaching and History No less remarkable than the external solidarity of the church, and indeed the secret of it, is her consist ent and coherent system of teachings and practices. From the mighty moral principles that reach down to the depths of human nature, to the symbolic regalia of her holiday pageants, all the church's doctrines of faith and precepts of morals and forms of worship are related to a few great truths, and are, in their time and place, the natural and proper expression of those truths. Book excerpt: 2023 College Theology Society Best Book Award 2023 Catholic Media Association Third Place Award, Theology – Morality, Ethics, Christology, Mariology, and Redemption 2023 Association of Catholic Publishers Second Place Award, Theology Dust in the Blood considers the harrowing realities of life with depression from a Christian theological perspective. In conversation with popular Christian theologies of depression that justify why this suffering exists and prescribe how people ought to relate to it, Jessica Coblentz offers another Christian approach to this condition: she reflects on depression as a wilderness experience. Weaving first-person narratives of depression, contemporary theologies of suffering, and ancient biblical tales of the wilderness, especially the story of Hagar, Coblentz argues for and contributes to an expansion of Christian ideas about what depression is, how God relates to it, and how Christians should understand and respond to depression in turn.

This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials and Non-Essentials of the Catholic Religion Yet many remain where they are, outside the Ark of Salvation (at least as regards visible communion) because of some strange misunderstanding of what they would be expected to believe and to do if they sub mitted to the Church's authority. It is in the hope of helping such souls that this series of papers is written. Let me say at the outset that nothing is further from my mind than any desire to dilute or minimize in the slightest degree the obligations of Catholics in matters of faith or practice. To do so would be not only most disloyal to the divinely appointed authority of the Church, but also a very foolish and short sighted proceeding, which could produce only disastrous results. Download or read book The Whole Mystery of Christ written by Jordan Daniel Wood and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2022-10-15 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thoroughgoing examination of Maximus Confessor’s singular theological vision through the prism of Christ’s cosmic and historical Incarnation. Jordan Daniel Wood changes the trajectory of patristic scholarship with this comprehensive historical and systematic study of one of the most creative and profound thinkers of the patristic era: Maximus Confessor (560–662 CE). Wood's panoramic vantage on Maximus’s thought emulates the theological depth of Hans Urs von Balthasar’s Cosmic Liturgy while also serving as a corrective to that classic text. Maximus's theological vision may be summed up in his enigmatic assertion that “the Word of God, very God, wills always and in all things to actualize the mystery of his Incarnation.” The Whole Mystery of Christ sets out to explicate this claim. Attentive to the various contexts in which Maximus thought and wrote—including the wisdom of earlier church fathers, conciliar developments in Christological and Trinitarian doctrine, monastic and ascetic ways of life, and prominent contemporary philosophical traditions—the book explores the relations between God’s act of creation and the Word’s historical Incarnation, between the analogy of being and Christology, and between history and the Fall, in addition to treating such topics as grace, deification, theological predication, and the ontology of nature versus personhood. Perhaps uniquely among Christian thinkers, Wood argues, Maximus envisions creatio ex nihilo as creatio ex Deo in the event of the Word’s kenosis: the mystery of Christ is the revealed identity of the Word’s historical and cosmic Incarnation. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of patristics, historical theology, systematic theology, and Byzantine studies.

Book The Holy Catholic Church

Download or read book The Holy Catholic Church written by Henry Barclay Swete and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Catholic Church: The Communion of Saints; A Study in the Apostles Creed This book contains the substance of courses of lectures given at Cambridge in 1913-14 to classes consisting chiefly of candidates for the ministry of the Church of England. There are few questions of more practical importance to Christian people, whether clergy or laity, than those which are raised by a study of the character, the work, and the functions of the Catholic Church. Upon the answer which we give to those questions depends our attitude, as individuals, towards the great society of which we are members. It determines for each of us whether he shall march in the war against sin and unbelief as a soldier in the army of Christ, under the command of its officers, conscious of the honour and the joy of serving in the ranks of a trained and disciplined force; or as an irresponsible adventurer, brave and loyal at heart, but a member of an irregular company, which follows no leaders but such as are chosen by itself.
