This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents water treatment plant information as well as results of sampling & analysis at two coagulation/filtration plants & one lime softening plant. The objective of sampling & analysis was to evaluate the effectiveness of the water treatment plants to consistently remove arsenic (As) from source water. Additionally, data were collected in this study to evaluate the characteristics of the residuals produced by the treatment processes. The study was divided into 3 phases: source water sampling, preliminary sampling, & long-term evaluation. Includes 3 appendices, 20 figures, & 26 tables.

Book excerpt: The recently lowered arsenic maximum contaminant level (MCL) presents new challenges in the monitoring and treatment capabilities of drinking water utilities. This report provides advice to utilities and consultants as they monitor, make treatment modifications to control arsenic, and explain arsenic issues to the public. It overviews research on arsenic in drinking water with respect to health issues, occurrence, monitoring and treatment, and reviews the major treatment processescoagulation, lime softening, iron-manganese removal, ion exchange, activated alumina, reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, and augmented micro- or ultrafiltration. Book Advances in Drinking Water Purification

Download or read book Advances in Drinking Water Purification written by Sibdas Bandyopadhyay and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2024-01-17 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Drinking Water Purification: Small Systems and Emerging Issues captures the knowledge and impact on the performance of various types of water purification technologies and identities the need for further development with a view to carry forward the SDG global targets of achieving safe and affordable drinking water. The book bridges the knowledge gap between various types of treatability options which is essential for selection of suitable treatment systems and augmentation in the desirable levels of specific contaminants. It focuses on providing the scope of selecting location specific technology options by presenting multiple approaches for treatment of most crucial toxic contaminants/pathogens. In addition, it provides insights into the effect of nature of impurities and selection of treatment options on the global quality of drinking water, comprising its possible impacts on the efficiency of the techniques used and thus on the safety of drinking water. This information is indispensable in identifying the appropriate technology depending on the socioeconomic conditions to address the problem of decontamination in drinking water. Discusses point-of-use devices for the removal of organic and inorganic contaminants from drinking water Provides a multipronged approach to encourage, recognize, protect and commercialize available options for water purification Includes case studies for field testing/pilot trials Provides an in-depth analysis on the efficacy of small systems with an emphasis on the sustainability, socio-technical aspects and emerging issues

Book The Modeling of Arsenic Removal from Contaminated Water Using Coagulation and Sorption

Download or read book The Modeling of Arsenic Removal from Contaminated Water Using Coagulation and Sorption written by Jin-Wook Kim and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To achieve predictive capability for complex environmental systems with coagulation and arsenic sorption, a unified improved coagulation model coupled with arsenic sorption was developed. A unified coagulation model coupled with arsenic sorption was achieved by the following steps: (1) an improved discretized population balance equation (PBE) was developed to obtain the exact solution of conventional coagulation, (2) the improved PBE was extended to an adjustable geometric size interval having higher numerical stability, accuracy, and computational efficiency than existing models for fractal aggregate coagulation that includes agglomeration and fragmentation, (3) a surface complexation equilibrium model and a sorption kinetic model was introduced to predict arsenic sorption behavior onto hydrous metal oxide surfaces, and (4) an improved discretized PBE was coupled with arsenic sorption kinetics and equilibrium models by aid of collision efficiency a(ri, rj) depending on surface charge (potential) on the hydrous metal oxide particles, colliding particle size ratio, and fluid strain-rate in applied flow system. The collision efficiency a(ri, rj) into the improved discretized coagulation model for fractal aggregate yielded a unified improved coagulation model coupled with arsenic sorption kinetics and the equilibrium model. Thus, an improved unified coagulation model could provide high statistical accuracy, numerical stability, and computational efficiency to enhance predictive capability for behavior of arsenic sorption and fractal colloid particle aggregation and break-up, simultaneously. From the investigation, it is anticipated that the unified coagulation model coupled with arsenic sorption kinetics and equilibrium will provide a more complete understanding of the arsenic removal mechanism and its application to water/wastewater treatment. Further, this coupled model can be applied to other water and wastewater treatment systems combined with sorption and filtration processes. These combined processes can be optimized by the coupled model that was developed in this study. By simulating the arsenic sorption and particle size distribution as a pretreatment before filtration (sand filtration or membrane filtration), the overall arsenic removal efficiency and operation cost can be estimated.
