[...] To determine the state of knowledge and where further research and data analysis are needed, we con- ducted a systematic review of literature on the growth responses of interior tree species to fertilization. [...] Relative growth response of interior spruce to fertilization ranged from 9 to 109% for height, from 75 to 277% for volume, and from 27 to 203% for basal area (Table 1). [...] Two other topics of concern with respect to the resilience of British Colum- bia forests to climate change are the interactions between forest fertilization 15 Basal area (%) Volume (%) Height (%) and (1) damage due to insects, disease, and weather, and (2) carbon fluxes and storage. Book excerpt: "The preliminary effects of different regimes and frequencies of repeated fertilization on foliar nutrition and growth of eight young lodgepole pine and interior spruce forests in north-central British Columbia are reported. At least 6 years of growth measurements have been obtained from seven of the eight "maximum productivity" installations. These results indicate that the repeated fertilization of young managed forests may be a potentially viable strategy for addressing timber supply challenges in the interior of British Columbia. Young spruce plantations are apparently particularly well suited to intensive forest management. Although four of the five lodgepole pine installations have produced significant growth gains following periodic (every 6 years) and yearly fertilization, the responses to date have been more variable and consistently smaller than those obtained at the spruce study sites."

The focus is on techniques for restoring soil productivity, with the implied objective of re-establishing a productive forest ecosystem on a site that has suffered degradation. The first two sections of the report provide an overview of soil rehabilitation in the province and review the productivity of degraded and rehabilitated forest soils. This is followed by a section on soil physical process and nutrient cycling, describing how an understanding of growth-limiting conditions can guide practitioners to strategies for effective and cost-efficient rehabilitation. The next section reviews rehabilitation techniques, including tillage, topsoil conservation and replacement, reforestation and revegetation methods, and soil amelioration using fertilizers, amendments, and mulches. Finally, information gaps and research needs are identified.
