Book A Systematic Literature Review on Mathematical Models of Humanitarian Logistics

Download or read book A Systematic Literature Review on Mathematical Models of Humanitarian Logistics written by Ibrahim M. Hezam and published by Infinite Study. This book was released on with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanitarian logistics (HL) is considered one of the most significant issues of disaster operations and management. Thus, HL operation should be viable enough to function well under the uncertain and complex nature of the disaster. Many difficulties in pre-and post-disaster phases bring both human and economic losses. Therefore, it is essential to make sure that the HL operations are designed efficiently. In the last two decades, several publications have emphasized efficient HL operations and proposed several mathematical models and algorithms to increase the efficiency of HL operations and motivated the necessity of a systematic literature review. A systematic literature review is deemed pertinent due to its transparent and detailed article searching procedure. In this study, due to the importance of the mathematical optimization model, we reviewed more than one hundred articles published between 2000 and 2020 to investigate the optimization models in the field of HL.We classified the optimization models into three main problems: facility location problems, relief distribution, and mass evacuation where each of the classified areas includes both deterministic and non-deterministic models.

Book Humanitarian Logistics

Book excerpt: Imagine planning an event like the Olympics. Now imagine planning the same event but not knowing when or where it will take place, or how many will attend. This is what humanitarian logisticians are up against. Oversights result in serious consequences for the victims of disasters. So they have to get it right, fast.

Book Decision Aid Models for Disaster Management and Emergencies

Download or read book Decision Aid Models for Disaster Management and Emergencies written by Begoña Vitoriano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-01-26 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disaster management is a process or strategy that is implemented when any type of catastrophic event takes place. The process may be initiated when anything threatens to disrupt normal operations or puts the lives of human beings at risk. Governments on all levels as well as many businesses create some sort of disaster plan that make it possible to overcome the catastrophe and return to normal function as quickly as possible. Response to natural disasters (e.g., floods, earthquakes) or technological disaster (e.g., nuclear, chemical) is an extreme complex process that involves severe time pressure, various uncertainties, high non-linearity and many stakeholders. Disaster management often requires several autonomous agencies to collaboratively mitigate, prepare, respond, and recover from heterogeneous and dynamic sets of hazards to society. Almost all disasters involve high degrees of novelty to deal with most unexpected various uncertainties and dynamic time pressures. Existing studies and approaches within disaster management have mainly been focused on some specific type of disasters with certain agency oriented. There is a lack of a general framework to deal with similarities and synergies among different disasters by taking their specific features into account. This book provides with various decisions analysis theories and support tools in complex systems in general and in disaster management in particular. The book is also generated during a long-term preparation of a European project proposal among most leading experts in the areas related to the book title. Chapters are evaluated based on quality and originality in theory and methodology, application oriented, relevance to the title of the book.

Book excerpt: Several times people on the earth are aicted by the strike of unpredictable phenomena like a disaster. Although some non-governmental organization (NGO) involving in disaster relief operation, prepositioned some resources in disaster-prone areas, but it is not sucient for all times. Sometimes, due to the high intensive devastation, help for providing relief is requested to the other national or international aid. This research has introduced a mathematical model for humanitarian logistic considering two optimization criteria minimize the total cost and total time of the relief logistic operation with a collaboration of resource collection by the NGOs.

Book Managing Humanitarian Logistics

Download or read book Managing Humanitarian Logistics written by B.S. Sahay and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses emerging themes in the area of humanitarian logistics. It examines how humanitarian logistics and supply chains play a key role, focusing on rapidly delivering the correct amount of goods, people and monetary resources to the locations needed to achieve the success of relief efforts in response to global emergencies such as flood, earthquakes, wars etc. With an increase in the frequency, magnitude and impact of both natural and manmade disasters, effective delivery of humanitarian aid is an issue that is becoming increasingly important in the context of disaster management. The book focuses on how logistics systems and supply chains responsible for delivering this aid from origin to recipients can be made more effective and efficient. It also discusses how the development of information technology systems that can provide visibility to the disaster relief supply chain marks a huge step forward for the humanitarian sector as a whole. As more organizations begin to adopt and implement these systems and visibility is established, the use of key performance indicators will then become essential to further enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of these supply chains.

Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Operations Research written by Saïd Salhi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-07 with total page 923 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operations Research (OR) is a fast-evolving field, which is having a significant impact on its neighbouring disciplines of Business Analytics and Data Science, and on contemporary business and management practices. This handbook provides a comprehensive and cutting edge collection of studies in the area. Views differ on what should be included within the scope of OR. The editors of this volume have taken the view that an inclusive stance is the most helpful, both for theory and practice. Real-world problems often require consideration from both ‘softer’ and ‘harder’ perspectives and need consideration of both predictive and prescriptive problems. In accordance with this inclusive approach to OR, the book is divided into six parts, covering Discrete Optimization, Continuous Optimization, Heuristic Search Optimization, Forecasting, Simulation and Prediction, Problem Structuring and Behavioural OR, and finally some recent OR Applications. This wide-ranging handbook includes a culturally diverse collection of authors, with different perspectives and backgrounds around Operations Research. It will be of tremendous value to researchers, students and practitioners in the field of OR

Book Performance Management in Humanitarian Logistics Development of a Process driven and IT supported Performance Measurement System

Download or read book Performance Management in Humanitarian Logistics Development of a Process driven and IT supported Performance Measurement System written by Adam Widera and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2023-08-25 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Logistics and supply chain management are considered as the backbone of humanitarian operations, significantly influencing their performance. Consequently, it is not surprising that the academic community addressed performance measurement in humanitarian logistics early on and extensively. However, there exists a significant disparity between the academic findings on performance measurement and their practical implementation within humanitarian organizations. What factors contribute to this gap, and how can we bridge it? This book aims to provide a socio-technical solution through an action researchbased approach that designs and develops a process-driven and IT-supported performance management system for humanitarian logistics. By utilizing an iterative and participatory design methodology, an active involvement of humanitarian organizations in identifying and addressing their practitioner realities, needs, and objectives is ensured. The resulting performance management system has been designed, implemented, and evaluated within three distinct and representative humanitarian organizations. As a result, these research findings hold promise for enhancing the capabilities of humanitarian organizations to measure and manage logistics performance effectively.
