Book The Transition of Students with Disabilities Into Adult Living

Download or read book The Transition of Students with Disabilities Into Adult Living written by Christy Kay Cortner and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The narrative inquiry research study proposal presented the problem: If the transition of students with disabilities into adulthood is deemed to be important to the educational system and to society, then follow-up studies of these students are essential to assessing their success. Using an interview guide adapted from the National Center on Secondary Education and Transition, special education students and their parents who graduated from a Northern Idaho high school were interviewed. Employment, services needed and received, and quality of life indicators of these students were discussed in descriptive form. Literature review revealed that legislation has mandated that transition planning for special education students be implemented. Success for students after high school graduation is questionable, and many factors determine their success. The study found that students with disabilities were presented with many challenges. The study found that there were many factors that influenced their success in transitioning into adult living. The remediation they received in the special education classroom, as well as the special education support they received in the general education setting was helpful in helping the students to compensate and remediate their areas of disabilities. Vocational classes and job shadowing helped them to explore different careers and interests, and helped develop the students' self-esteem. Individual teachers who expressed interest in them and gave the students help and support were recognized by the participants as an influential part of their transition. The Individual Education Plan and transition plan helped the student, parent(s) and school work together as a team toward the common good of the student. Community and state resources were accessed and utilized by participants once they graduated from high school.

But with the proper preparation, students can enjoy success! This practical guide explains how the system for accommodations works, describes students' rights and responsibilities within that system, and employs the voices of seasoned professionals and college students to explain the skills and strategies students should develop while they are in high school to ensure success when they reach college. As a bonus, it also offers answers to questions students with disabilities frequently ask about disclosing their disability in the admissions process.

Book Transitioning from Secondary Education Into Adult Life

Download or read book Transitioning from Secondary Education Into Adult Life written by James Ingram and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This phenomenological study examines the experiences of Navajo students with intellectual disabilities as they transition from high school into life as an adult. Cultural perspectives, disability, and family expectations are factors that affect transitional outcomes. The current literature around transition programming holds a limited view of preferred outcomes for students with disabilities. The widely accepted transition outcomes are employment, post-secondary training/education, and independent living. These transitional goals are formulated within the thinking of Western culture and are embraced within the philosophies of the U.S. educational system. Many students with intellectual disabilities have difficulty obtaining competitive employment, entering and graduating from college, or living without support. All three of these expressions of successful transition require skills and abilities that are often out of reach for a student with significant intellectual disabilities. Incongruent cultural expectations may compound the difficulty for students with intellectual disabilities as they move from the structured environment of school into the world of an adult. The procedures for this research are supported by a phenomenological methodology. The participants were three individuals who self-identify as Navajo and have a documented intellectual disability, plus the caregivers in their families. The transcribed interviews of the individual participants and family members provided the data to be analyzed and coded. Interviews were conducted using open-ended questions to explore the commonalities of the participants' experiences and to preserve their unique perspectives. This study illuminates the experiences of the participants in an effort to examine the transition process from a Navajo perspective. Also, transitional outcomes are explored from a perspective outside of the dominant Western viewpoint in order to uncover successful outcomes that may be more obtainable for individuals with disabilities regardless of cultural affiliation.

Book Transition by Design

    Book Details:
  • Author : Audrey A. Trainor
  • Publisher : Teachers College Press
  • Release : 2017
  • ISBN : 0807775762
  • Pages : 180 pages

Download or read book Transition by Design written by Audrey A. Trainor and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transitions to adulthood for adolescents with disabilities are as diverse as the adolescents themselves. While there have been marked improvements for students with disabilities, there is still concern that employment education and independent living outcomes are not equitable across groups of students. For example, adolescents of color are more likely to face exclusionary discipline procedures in school resulting in detention and court involvement which, in turn, can limit access to educational opportunities in inclusive settings. Recommending a shift toward strengths-based approaches to research and practice, Trainor explores how all stakeholders, including researchers and practitioners, can help shape equitable opportunities for youth with disabilities in transition. Transition by Design reframes disability, diversity, and equity during the transition from high school to adulthood. “Audrey Trainor offers an excellent treatise on transition research and practice as cultural acts that lead to differential outcomes for youth with disabilities, particularly for those from historically marginalized groups. Each of us must heed her call to examine how our personal and professional cultures influence our work and contribute to equity, or inequity, in programs and services for these populations.” —Alba A. Ortiz, professor emerita, The University of Texas at Austin “With passion and precision, Trainor calls us to see the work of transition education through new and broader lenses. Her remarkable book pushes the field to pursue equity and ensure every young person with a disability can flourish.” —Erik Carter, professor, Vanderbilt University

Book Transition to Adulthood for Students with Disabilities

Download or read book Transition to Adulthood for Students with Disabilities written by Thomas Gibbon and published by National Professional Resources, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-04-06 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition to adulthood after high school is a critical juncture for students with disabilities. Educators need to help parents and students start preparing for this transition long before high school, when a formal transition plan is legally required. Effective transition planning is a long-term, ongoing process that can greatly influence the lifelong outcomes of students with disabilities. This 6-page, quick-reference laminated guide is written to address the needs of students with moderate to severe disabilities who are more likely to move into specialized vocational training or immediately enter the workforce after high school than transition to college. It reviews the school district's legal responsibilities under IDEA and Section 504, and identifies other federal laws with implications for students and adults with disabilities. It is designed to help all stakeholders, including the student, parents, and school districts, set appropriately ambitious individual goals for life after high school and develop a plan to achieve these goals.

Book Latin Students in Engineering

Download or read book Latin Students in Engineering written by Lara Perez-Felkner and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-12 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing population of engineering students who identify as Latin* are underrepresented in the field of engineering. Latin* refers to an individual of Latin American origin or descent, without restricting to a specific gender. The asterisk (*) includes related identity terms such as Latina/é/o/u/x.There is, however, a rising need to train U.S. students in engineering skills to meet the demands of our increasingly technological workforce. Structurally excluding Latin* students hinders their economic and educational opportunities in engineering. Latin* Students in Engineering examines the state of Latin* engineering education at present as well as considerations for policy and practice regarding engineering education aimed at enhancing opportunity and better serving Latin* students. The essays in this volume first consider, theoretically and empirically, the experiences of Latin* students in engineering education and then expand beyond the student level to focus on institutional and social structures that challenge Latin* students' success and retention. Finally, it illuminates emergent work and considers future research, policy, and practice.

Preparation issues such as financial aid, applying for college, and other long-term planning areas are addressed in detail. Download or read book Textbook of Psychiatry for Intellectual Disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Marco O. Bertelli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-11 with total page 1075 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a state of the art of the knowledge on the prevalence, risk and etiological factors, clinical features, assessment procedures and tools, diagnostic criteria, treatment, and prognosis of the psychiatric disorders encountered in people with intellectual disability (ID) and low-functioning autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ID and ASD represent two meta-syndromic groups of several different conditions, each with particular cognitive and communication features. People with ID/ASD display an increased prevalence of a variety of psychiatric disorders, including psychotic disorders, mood disorders, anxiety and stress-related disorders, somatoform disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, as well behavioral syndromes, personality disorders, and disorders due to psychoactive substance use. This book will enable readers to understand the specificities of psychiatric disorders in the context of ID/ASD. It explains clearly how diagnostic criteria and assessment procedures for psychiatric disorders that were created for the general population have to be modified for use with ID/ASD. Above all, it will enable clinicians to overcome difficulties in diagnosis and to deliver more effective care that meets the particular needs of patients with ID/ASD.
