Book Contemporary Research in Engineering Science

Download or read book Contemporary Research in Engineering Science written by Romesh C. Batra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue failures occur in aerospace, marine, nuclear structures and automobile com ponents from initiation and propagation of cracks from holes, scratches or defects in the material. To design against these failures, crack propagation life and fracture strength need to be accurately predicted. It is reported in the literature, that these failures often initiate as surface cracks, corner cracks and cracks emanating from fastner holes. Such cracks are with elliptic or nearly elliptic in shapes. The deviation from elliptic shape is due to varying constraint effect along the crack front. Even in situations, when the cracks are through the thickness of the material, there would be thicknesswise variation of constraint effects leading to three dimensional nature of crack growth. Accurate predictions of the crack growth in these cases by numerical methods can be made only by solving three-dimensional boundary value problems. Empirical relationships have been developed [1] based on Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics over years describing fatigue crack growth response. Some of these empirical relationships required modifications in the later stages, to meet the design applications. The Crack closure phenomenon discovered by Elber[2, 3] during the crack growth phase is mainly attributed to the local material yielding near the crack tip and the consequent residual plastic wake behind the crack tip. It helped considerably in understanding several aspects of fatigue crack growth and rewrite these relations.

Book A Method for Estimating Some Longitudinal and Lateral Rigid body Responses of Airplanes to Continuous Atmospheric Turbulence

Download or read book A Method for Estimating Some Longitudinal and Lateral Rigid body Responses of Airplanes to Continuous Atmospheric Turbulence written by Ellwood L. Peele and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is presented for estimating some lateral and longitudinal rigid-body responses of airplanes to random atmospheric turbulence. Estimates of center-of-gravity load factors and motion responses can be made simply and easily through the use of parametric charts. Sample calculations are included to illustrate the method.

Book Introduction to Aeroelasticity

Download or read book Introduction to Aeroelasticity written by Harijono Djojodihardjo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-03 with total page 1080 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is intended as a core text for courses on aeroelasticity or aero-elasto-mechanics for senior undergraduate/graduate programs in aerospace and mechanical engineering. The book focuses on the basic understanding of the concepts required in learning about aeroelasticity, from observation, reasoning, and understanding fundamental physical principles. Fundamental and simple mathematics will be introduced to describe the features of aeroelastic problems, and to devise simple concurrent physical and mathematical modeling. It will be accompanied by the introduction and understandings of the mechanisms that create the interactions that generate the aeroelastic phenomena considered. The students will also be led to the relation between observed phenomena, assumptions that may have to be adopted to arrive at physical and mathematical modelling, interpreting and verifying the results, and the accompanied limitations, uncertainties and inaccuracies. The students will also be introduced to combine engineering problem solving attitude and determination with simple mechanics problem-solving skills that coexist harmoniously with a useful mechanical intuition.

Book The Theory of Diffusion in Strained Systems

Download or read book The Theory of Diffusion in Strained Systems written by Louis A. Girifalco and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 1082 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general theory of solid-state diffusion in strained systems is developed on a molecular-kinetic basis. The theory predicts that for simple strains the diffusion coefficient is an exponential function of the lattice parameter and that the rate of change of the diffusion coefficient with strain is linearly related to the interatomic forces. It has also been shown that for plastic flow the diffusion coefficient is a linear function of strain rate. All the conclusions are confirmed by the data available in the literature.

Book A Wind tunnel Evaluation of Analytical Techniques for Predicting Static Stability and Control Characteristics of Flexible Aircraft

Download or read book A Wind tunnel Evaluation of Analytical Techniques for Predicting Static Stability and Control Characteristics of Flexible Aircraft written by Irving Abel and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental evaluation of analytical techniques for predicting certain stability and control characteristics of a large flexible aircraft is presented. Analytical methods based on both the model approach and flexibility influence coefficients are developed to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of a flexible airplane. These methods are then applied to a flexibly scaled model of a supersonic transport configuration. Comparisons of wind-tunnel data, calculations based on the model approach, and flexibility influence coefficients are presented over the Mach number range from 0.6 to 2.7. An examination of the results obtained from this study indicates that both analytical techniques predict reasonably well the effect of flexibility on the basic longitudinal characteristics and that both techniques give generally comparable results.

Book Calculated Responses of a Large Sweptwing Airplane to Continuous Turbulence with Flight test Comparisons

Download or read book Calculated Responses of a Large Sweptwing Airplane to Continuous Turbulence with Flight test Comparisons written by Floyd V. Bennett and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: Calculated responses of symmetrical airplane motions, wing deformations, and wing loads due to continuous turbulence are shown to compare favorably with available flight-test results. These calculated responses are based on random-process theory, five degrees of freedom, lifting-surface aerodynamics, and one-dimensional turbulence. Of the five degrees of freedom used only three, rigid-body translation and pitch modes and the first wing bending mode, are shown to contirbute significantly to the airplane responses over the frequency range considered (0 to 2 cps). Bending-moment amplification factors are presented in order to show the effects of dynamic aeroelasticity. These effects are found to increase the response by 35 to 115 percent, depending upon the spanwise station.
