Download or read book A Technical Dictionary English French and French English Of Sea Terms Phrases and Words in the English and French Languages written by William Pirrie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Technical Dictionary (English-French and French-English) Of Sea Terms, Phrases, and Words in the English and French Languages: For the Use of Seamen, Engineers, Pilots, Shipbuilders, Shipowners, and Others This Dictionary of Sea Terms, Phrases, and Words is an attempt to collect together the technical words and phrases used in the language of sailors, and in shipbuilding and engineering yards, amongst Englishmen and Frenchmen respectively Most of the words, but few of the phrases, are to be found scattered amongst a number of large technical works, the search for which necessarily entails much waste of time and trouble. Moreover, the works referred to are not generally available when wanted, and when found are frequently not those which would be used by sailors. In the present little volume the aim has been to present a sufficient selection of such words and phrases in a compact form, such as can be kept readily at hand on board ship, in the shipyard or works, or in a merchants or broker's office. Book A Dictionary of Sea Terms

Download or read book A Dictionary of Sea Terms written by An Ansted and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of Sea Terms: For the Use of Yachtsmen, Amateur Boatmen, and Beginners I am anxious to make it clear that this little Dictionary is intended as a help to beginners. I do not profess to teach those who may be already experienced in yachting and the art of boat-sailing, and still less those acquainted with the sea. For these there are various nautical dictionaries; but so far as I am aware, there is no such work exclusively devoted to those who start in entire ignorance of their subject; and to supply this apparent want the present work is an attempt. Such a work presents some difficulties, and is, therefore, naturally open to criticism. Nautical terms are essentially technical; many are used in various senses, while sometimes several may have but one meaning. And besides these we have a list of expressions which, while they cannot be regarded as sea terms, have direct reference to boat-building and boat-sailing. It is to be feared, too, that some of those phrases now commonly met with in the sporting journals may have been overlooked. Numerous as are the terms in daily use among seafaring men, their number has been considerably enlarged of late years, not only in consequence of recent improvements in yacht-building, which require new names for parts and fittings hitherto unknown, but chiefly in consequence of that tendency in a certain class of sporting scriveners so to expand the technicality and the volubility of their nautical language that it has been found impossible to keep pace with them. True maritime terms may generally be traced back to very simple derivations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
