Download or read book Kabbalah and the Founding of America written by Brian Ogren and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the influence of Kabbalah in shaping America’s religious identity In 1688, a leading Quaker thinker and activist in what is now New Jersey penned a letter to one of his closest disciples concerning Kabbalah, or what he called the mystical theology of the Jews. Around that same time, one of the leading Puritan ministers developed a messianic theology based in part on the mystical conversion of the Jews. This led to the actual conversion of a Jew in Boston a few decades later, an event that directly produced the first kabbalistic book conceived of and published in America. That book was read by an eventual president of Yale College, who went on to engage in a deep study of Kabbalah that would prod him to involve the likes of Benjamin Franklin, and to give a public oration at Yale in 1781 calling for an infusion of Kabbalah and Jewish thought into the Protestant colleges of America. Kabbalah and the Founding of America traces the influence of Kabbalah on early Christian Americans. It offers a new picture of Jewish-Christian intellectual exchange in pre-Revolutionary America, and illuminates how Kabbalah helped to shape early American religious sensibilities. The volume demonstrates that key figures, including the well-known Puritan ministers Cotton Mather and Increase Mather and Yale University President Ezra Stiles, developed theological ideas that were deeply influenced by Kabbalah. Some of them set out to create a more universal Kabbalah, developing their ideas during a crucial time of national myth building, laying down precedents for developing notions of American exceptionalism. This book illustrates how, through fascinating and often surprising events, this unlikely inter-religious influence helped shape the United States and American identity.

Download or read book Imperial World written by William L Frame and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empress Isabella feared the burly-bodied, six-legged, narrow-headed creature known as kessra. Her fear of the Planos predator, combined with the late Admiral Harrington's suspicions of the creature's intelligence, made each seek a different path to aid Jennifer and the natives of Planos. Isabella never imagined the transformation of Jennifer's mountain cavern home into a functional pioneering homestead with a few modern technological advantages to enhance their safety would become the focal point of the fearsome creature's rage. She knew Taric was aware the empire had to remain true to the charter's bylaws of noninterference in the natural progression of species evolution. Upon receiving Taric's vid message, she witnessed his emergence as a leader, formally requesting the establishment of political and trade relations between their worlds, instantly providing the empire an opportunity to assist without actively interfering with a trade partner's internal affairs. Leaning back in her desk chair with her eyes closed, imagining Jennifer witnessing the siege of her mountain home amid a rising number of savage, unforgiving predators encroaching into the territory, a frightening vision began to play out in her mind of terrifying enraged beasts rapidly advancing toward Jennifer in a coordinated swarm. Shivering with fright, not wishing to see further into the depths of her imagination, Isabella opened her eyes, fearfully shouting in the privacy of her empty office, "No! No! That's not real!" Yet questioning the imaginative visions within her mind's eye, Isabella sensed a faint nagging presence of premonition, asking her, "Or is it?" Apprehensive of the grim reality facing Planos increased Isabella's anxiety over the survival of vulnerable natives living in the eastern wilderness. However, in this case, Isabella believed any variation of humanoid life in the galaxy has more value than a merciless predator with feeding habits akin to sharks inhabiting Earth's oceans. Isabella had to return to Planos, secretly hoping Merlin, the AI inhabiting the fleet's flagship, Maleficent, could ascertain the true scope of the crisis and provide a course of action without violating the charter's strict bylaws.

Download or read book Tissue Culture of Epithelial Cells written by Mary Taub and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epithelial cells are present in many different tissues in the body, and possess a diverse number of functional properties. However, all epithelial cells share some common characteristics. The cells possess a morphological polarity (an-apical and basolateral surface), and are interconnected by tight junctions. The epithelial cells also possess the capacity to transport select solutes across the monolayer. Transport systems localized on either the apical or basolateral surface are respon sible for this vectorial transport. Such characteristics of epithelial cells can be examined in the tissue culture situation. This volume discusses the use of cell culture techniques to study these fundamental properties of epithelial cells. Ma jor questions concerning epithelia which may be examined in culture are ad dressed. The approaches which are taken to answer these questions are described in detail with regards to kidney cell cultures. Similar investigations may be done with epithelial cell cultures derived from other tissues, following the kidney cell culture paradigm.
