Book A System of Christian Doctrine Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A System of Christian Doctrine Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Isaak August Dorner and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Christian Doctrine, Vol. 1 The next best thing, it has been said, to writing a good book, is to translate one. Whatever be the merits of the translation, the original of this work is assuredly a good book. Its author is already favourably known to the English-speaking nations by previous translations in the Foreign Theological Library. The stupendous work upon The Person of Christ has now become in Great Britain and America, what it had been in Germany from its publication, a classic in Christology. The equally valuable History of Protestant Theology, so full of mature wisdom, keen criticism, wide sympathy, liberal thought, and evangelical power, contains one of the most philosophical and lucid statements in the English tongue of the origin and aims of Lutheranism, whilst by its history of religious thought in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it affords at once one of the best guides to the modem German schools, and one of the clearest and most prophetic exponents of that regeneration of Theology now in such rapid progress. Still, large as are the merits of Dr. Dorner's previous labours, the System of Christian Doctrine, to judge from the twelve hundred pages already issued, is distinctly his masterpiece, the ripe fruit of a long and thoughtful life. In Theology, as in every other branch of thought and practice, there are pioneers and colonists, inventors and collaborateurs, those who plant and those who water. Hence the history of Theology is the narrative of new impulses given, corrected, and exhausted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Christian Doctrine Y revered instructor in Christian Theology, Alvah Hovey, D. D., LL. D., generously granted _me permission to use his Manual of Christian Theology in the construction of this handbook. His order and outline have been fol lowed, with such changes as the intent oi this vol ume seemed to require. The purpose of my work is to present the ele ments of Christian Doctrine in a form adapted to the classroom, and to the use of students who are be ginners in the synthetic studies of biblical truth or are seeking for substance of doctrine that may be believed. A. H. Strong, D. D., LL. D., president of Rochester Theological Seminary, has kindly given me liberty to quote freely from his latest the sev enth, edition of Systematic Theology. Much help has been derived from the work of Prof. Sam uel Harris, D. D., LL. D., entitled God the Creator and Lord of All, and from representatives of vari ous schools of thought. But the limits of this book do not allow an extended list of authors consulted, and to whom indebtedness is acknowledged. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Doctrine and Systematic Theology The pages of this volume contain the substance of lectures on Systematic Theology which have been given by the writer, for nearly forty years, to successive classes of students at the Moravian College and Theological Seminary of Bethlehem, Pa. It is the first work of this kind written in the English language by a member of the oldest Protes tant Church, founded by the followers of J ohn Hus in 1457. While in no sense an official publication, but entirely inde pendent and personal in its statements and conclusions, it will be found to represent fairly the view - point of the Mo ravian Church or Unitas F ratrum, -as to the leading features of Christian Doctrine and Systematic Theology. Some persons may think it ill advised to publish such a work at this time of theological unrest and of apparently sharp contrasts between traditional and modern theology. But as to all that is really essential in Christian doctrine, it is -as timely now as ever, to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered unto the saints (jude v. The Gospel of Jesus Christ, our blessed Saviour, is as well suited to the needs of the twentieth cen tury of the Christian era as to the first. As for non essentials, such as denominational distinctions, ecclesiastical formulas, dogmatical definitions and historical criticism, it behooves all honest seekers after the truth, whether they call themselves orthodox or liberal, conservative or ad vanced, to acknowledge the limitations of our religious knowledge and understanding. For at best we know in part and we see in a mirror darkly (i Cor. Realizing this truth, we will be prepared to discuss all ques tions that present themselves in the different departments of Christian doctrine, in the spirit of charity, without narrow prejudice or assumption of a monopoly of wisdom, taking into consideration, if possible, all the new light which science, history and Christian experience have shed[preface to the jfirst Ebition. Book The Christian System Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian System Classic Reprint written by Alexander Campbell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within The Christian System by Alexander Campbell the author has put forth his views and understanding of the Christian church and the teachings therein. Asking questions such as "What God does" and addressing in detail the topic and practice of Baptism, Campbell establishes clear lines of reasoning along with exhibiting an in depth grasp of his chosen religion and its dogma. The Christian System demonstrates Campbell's clear respect for the religious scriptures of the Christian faith. Though well written and with the points made and substantiation soundly presented, many of his observations on these, the doctrines and structure of the church of his time are not fully correspondent to modern religious views. Regardless of this minor issue, this e-book is an essential and enlightening read for those following any form of the Christian faith and a particularly eye opening volume for those without a prior basis of learning regarding Christianity, containing extensive knowledge on the religion and all that is related. Download or read book New Testament Theology Vol 1 of 2 written by Willibald Beyschlag and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament Theology, Vol. 1 of 2: Or Historical Account of the Teaching of Jesus and of Primitive Christianity According to the New Testament Sources The following work, which has now the honour of being translated into English, and which contains the main pro duct of many years of theological occupation with the New Testament, has met with a more favourable reception in Germany than I could have expected. Not that my anti cipations that it would displease the extreme parties on right and left have been falsified; for even the moderate party now dominant in Germany, whilst regarding it with more respect, has treated it as alien to itself. All the more encouraging is that practical criticism, which consists in the eager purchase, diligent reading, and warm praise of a book by susceptible readers. This experience pleases me the more that I View New Testament theology as the source destined to rejuvenate our traditional Church and doctrinal systems, concerning the insufficiency of which our age, with all its other differences, is pretty unanimous. There are undoubtedly needs and feelings in England like our own, though, perhaps, the power of orthodox scholasticism may not be so great, and the inclina tion to abandon tradition and go back to the Holy Scriptures much stronger; and therefore I hail it as a new sign of the spiritual fellowship of German and English Protestantism, that my effort to promote a deeper and freer conception of the New Testament religion has met with sympathy on the other Side of the Channel, and is to gain a wider Sphere of influence through a careful and intelligent translation. Biblical theology, as a science still in its infancy, is liable to more uncertainty as to what exactly are its idea and the limits of its task than any other branch of theological science. Book The Development of Doctrine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Doctrine: The Work of Christ This lecture is designed to be a brief introduction to the History of Christian Doctrine. The subject was selected, partly because it has largely occupied my thoughts for some years past and partly because the drift of current theological speculation renders it necessary that every intelligent Christian should have definite views on a question of such great, practical interest. Steering clear of the Romanist theory, on the one hand, and the theory Of Skeptical Rationalism, on the other, I have endeavoured to present and defend a conception of the Development of Doctrine, which recognizes both the Divine authority of the Holy Scriptures, and the right Of the Church to test the doctrines received from the past, by the Word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.
