Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Synopsis on the Anatidae: Or Duck Tribe In preparing the following work, the chief aim of the Author has been not the invention of new species, hut the establishment of old ones, in which he flatters himself he has succeeded. Very few synonyms of the older authors on Ornithology not having been reconciled, the chief part of those that remain (with the exception of Forskall, of whose descriptions we cannot make any thing) may be placed to the score of varieties. The list of synonyms, he is perfectly aware, might have been increased to a much greater extent, but this would have much extended the work, and not, he conceives, have answered any good purpose. Many new species are also for the first time described: for the unlimited use of the specimens lately brought home by him from South Africa, and now exhibiting at Egyptian Hall, the author takes this opportunity of thanking Dr. Andrew Smith, who will shortly publish plates of the new species of that valuable collection in this and the other classes. His warmest thanks also are due to the gentlemen in charge of the National Collection, and to the Council and Curators of the Zoological Society, for the facilities afforded him in examining their respective collections. To the Earl of Derby, Charles Darwin, Esq. William Yarrell, Esq. and also to the author of that beautiful work the "Birds of Europe," he is much indebted for access to their notes and specimens. In the course of the work anatomical characters have for the first time been used for families, sub-families, and genera, where the author considered he had sufficient grounds to establish them; but as the number of specimens of foreign anatidae he has been enabled to obtain in a fit state for dissection has necessarily been very limited, he earnestly requests the assistance of those gentlemen who have it in their power towards this important branch, in forwarding to him foreign specimens for dissection, recent or preserved in spirits or brine, which he shall always think well worth carriage from any distance. Since the greater part of this work was printed we have received Mr. Swainson's volume of Dr. Lardner's Cyclopaedia, entitled "Animals in Menageries." There is little new in it as regards hi the class we at present are endeavouring to illustrate, the greater part of the letter-press being copied from Latham. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management of wild waterfowl has become increasingly intensive. Many birds now hatch in managed nesting cover or in artificial nesting structures, use man-made wetlands, and winter on crowded refuges while consuming a grain diet The water they use is often limited in supply and may contain residues from its many prior users. Unfortunately, intensified management often results in new problems, among which disease is important There are many similarities between the current form of management used for some waterfowl and that used in domestic animals. In both, the objective is to maintain a healthy, productive population. Dealing with health problems in waterfowl will benefit from combining the skills of veterinary medicine and wildlife ecology. Revisiting this book after 15 years allowed me to consider changes at the interface between the two disciplines. Veterinary medicine traditionally has been concerned with the individual and with treating sick animals, while the ecologist is concerned with populations and the manager has limited interest in treating sick birds. During this period there has been a marked increase in awareness among veterinarians that they have a responsibility in wildlife and conservation biology. Curricula of many veterinary colleges now include material on non-domestic animals and attempt to put disease in an ecological context. Also during this time, waterfowl managers have become more aware of disease as a factor in population biology and there are early attempts to put numbers to "disease" in models of continental waterfowl populations.

Book Paleogene Fossil Birds

  • Author : Gerald Mayr

Download or read book Paleogene Fossil Birds written by Gerald Mayr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present book the Paleogene fossil record of birds is detailed for the first time on a worldwide scale. I have developed the idea for such a project for several years, and think that it is an appropriate moment to present a summary of our c- rent knowledge of the early evolution of modern birds. Meanwhile not only is there a confusing diversity of fossil taxa, but also significant progress has been made concerning an understanding of the higher-level phylogeny of extant birds. Hypotheses which were not considered even a decade ago are now well supported by independent analyses of different data. In several cases these group together morphologically very different avian groups and allow a better understanding of the mosaic character distribution found in Paleogene fossil birds. The book aims at bringing some of this information together, and many of the following data are based on first-hand examination of fossil specimens.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 10 years ago, I had the chance to visit the university hospital in Munster, Germany. At the outpatient clinic there, I accidently met a young dermatologist who was devoted to the study of the quantification of irritated skin during his busy daily clinical work. I sensed immediately that this Dr. P. Frosch was conducting his research with the ideals and enthusiasm which were so familiar to me. Soon we found that we shared a similar past experience; we both had begun our careers in dermatological investigation with the same mentor. For me it was more than 25 years ago that I first met Dr. Kligman, Professor at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA. I reminisced that I had been greatly shocked by his initial question ''As a dermatologist, do you want to study living or dead skin?" because, at that time and even today, whenever we cannot collect enough information about the skin with the naked eye, it is invasively removed is common practice to histologically examine a skin sample that from living tissue. Many dermatologists still would never think of studying the living intact skin itself noninvasively with the aid of existing advanced technologies to assess its structural and functional properties. At that time Dr. Kligman intended to build up a system of evaluating the skin from various aspects, using methods that had been unduly neglected in the past and introducing various technological instruments.
