Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synopsis of the Flora of Colorado The "Synopsis of the Flora of Colorado," which the survey now presents to the public, has been prepared by Prof. Thomas C. Porter, of Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania, and Mr. John M. Coulter, one of the assistants connected with the survey for the past two years. It is intended to be a type of a series of "handbooks" of different branches of natural history, to be published from time to time as a part of the series of "Miscellaneous Publications," for the use of students all over the country. No. 3 of the series is now passing through the press, and has been prepared by the eminent ornithologist, Dr. E. Cones, U. S. A. It will form an octavo volume of several hundred pages, bringing the whole subject of western ornitholgy up to date. The mountain regions of Colorado are now so accessible to the traveling public, that this synopsis will prove a most valuable aid to students, and travelers who can, are annually visiting Colorado in great numbers. Indeed, the mountainous portions more nearly resemble the Alpine districts of Central Europe, not only in the scenery, but also in the different forms of vegetation. The tide of travel is fast turning in this direction, and the demand for works of this kind will necessarily be very great. It should be stated here, that the obligations of the survey to Professor Porter, for his share in the work, are very much increased from the fact that he occupied several months in its preparation without compensation from the Government. Book Flora of the Vicinity of New York Classic Reprint

Download or read book Flora of the Vicinity of New York Classic Reprint written by Norman Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of the Vicinity of New York It is a matter of common observation that these plants are not generally distributed throughout the region. In traveling from the Catskills to Cape May, the northern and southern limits of the area studied, we see a variety of plants found in one or the other of these widely separated localities, but not in both of them. Many species find their outposts of distribution near New York. Some appear to have come from the North or South, a few from the West, others are appar ently endemic in the area, and this great quantity of forms, the ap parent chaos of it all, raises many questions. What is the real com position of our flora, whence derived, and above all how did it reach its present luxuriance and beauty? The attempt to answer these ques tions necessitates a review of the causes that have influenced the origin and distribution of our native flora. For all practical purposes the agencies affecting the distribution of our native plants may be divided into edaphic and climatic ones. Under the first must be considered all questions of the relation of the vegetation to the soil and available water supply; or more simply stated the geological factors of distribution; under the second the relation of the flora to climate must be the chief concern. Book Field Book of Western Wild Flowers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Field Book of Western Wild Flowers Classic Reprint written by Margaret Armstrong and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field Book of Western Wild Flowers In this little book a very large number of the commoner wild flowers growing in the United States, west of the Rocky Mountains, are pictured and described. It is the first attempt to supply a popular field book for the whole West. The field is vast, including within its limits all sorts of climate and soil, producing thousands of flowers, infinite in variety and wonderful in beauty, their environment often as different as that of Heine's Pine and Palm. In such strange homes as the Grand Canyon and the Petrified Forest of Arizona, or the deserts of Utah and southern California, we find the oddest desert plants, forced to curious expedients in order to sustain life amidst almost perpetual heat and drought, but often displaying blossoms of such brilliance and delicacy that they might well be envied by their more fortunate sisters, flourishing beside shady waterfalls, in a "happy valley" like Yosemite, or a splendid mountain garden, such as spreads in many-colored parterres of bloom around the feet of Mt. Rainier. On the wind-swept plains hundreds of flowers are to be found; many kinds of hardy plants brighten the salty margins of the sea cliffs, or bloom, at the edge of the snow on rocky mountain peaks, while;quantities of humble, everyday flowers border our country roadsides or tint the hills and meadows with lavish color. The field includes the States of Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada, Utah and Arizona and to designate this whole field the term West is used in this book. The term Northwest designates Washington, Oregon, northern Idaho, and northern California, and the term Southwest covers southern California and Arizona. The flowers found only in the Rocky Mountains are not included, and it may be noted here that exceedingly few of the western flowers cross the Rockies and are found in the East. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Nature, 1820: Or Annual Synopsis of New Genera and Species of Animals, Plants, Etc; Discovered in North America The following lines shall contain many of my unpublished discoveries, made be tween'1816 and 1819. In the states of new-york, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, but sever al must still be delayed, as well as the figures. As my Ichthyology, or natural history ofthe Fishes of the Ohio, (containing 100 new species) is now under the press, the fishes of that river shall not be mentioned here. 'if I should occasion ally repeat the descriptions of some few new animals and plants, already commu micated to some societies, or journalists, the blame is their own. Why do they delay the publication of them and how am I to know if they ever received them, 8: mean to publish them Do they wish me to wait until somebody may follow the path which I have Opened, and anticipating my publications, deprive me of the fruit of my labor, (as it has been already attempted) and of the only reward I ever hope for my individual exertions, the esteem of the friends of knowledge I shall very seldom mention again those which have been already published, ex cept when they are only to be found in journals of very limited circulation; or when it will be needful to illustrate more carefully their characters or history. Very few Reptiles, Shells and Fossils will be introduced, although they include some of my most numerous discoveries; because I have already prepared several letters on our Erpetology for the American Journal of Science I am besides en' gaged in writing a general Conchology of the land shells and fresh water shells of the United States, and I have undertaken with Mr. John D. Clifi'ord to de scribe all the fossil remains of the western states. To those who may happen to regret the continual increase of} new genera and new species, I shall observe, that unless we detect and fix all the unknown genera and Species of beings existing in our country and on earth, we cannot extend and secure our researches after their properties, qualities and manners. Those who deplore the increase of natural knowledge, or knowledge of any kind, aregbelow our notice; they ought to be ranked with the enemies of mankind and. Of our moral powers. But from those who prefer to see new beings and materials ap pear under a handsome and prolix shape, I shall request to afford me the means of gratifying their peculiar taste, and when they do, 1 shall not fail to comply. Yet I shall add, that it is better for the, science and our purse, that many new objects should be introduced under a small compass, than when a few are scattered through amass of extraneous or compiled matter. My constant aim has been the extension of knowledge rather than the compilation of old materials. I wish that many naturalists and philosophers would always have the same object in view. Book Notes on the Flora of Middle Georgia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on the Flora of Middle Georgia Classic Reprint written by Roland M. Harper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Flora of Middle Georgia Athens, the county-seat of Clarke County, is situated in that section of the state known as Middle Georgia, a region well de fined geologically from the two newer sections, north and south Georgia. Middle Georgia occupies about one third of the area of the state, and is distinguished by its geological formation being wholly Archaean or metamorphic. My botanical explorations of this region, in the spring and fall of 1895 and 1896, and the Spring of 1897, were confined mainly to the western half of Clarke County, and portions of the neighboring counties of Jackson, Oconee, Walton and Morgan. This territory which I explored lies in the lower foothills of the Blue Ridge, being entirely south of latitude 34n., and east of longitude 83 31' W., and ranging from 500 to 800 feet above sea-level. Taking Clarke County as typical of the surrounding region, its characteristic features of soil, topography, etc., may be briefly de scribed. The predominating soil consists largely of red clay, de rived from the disintegration of the granitic rocks which underlie the surface everywhere in this region and outcrop in many places.
